World Bun Throwing Championships are the key to a rooftop place
Excitement is growing in Abingdon-on-Thames at the news that Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th Birthday is going to bring on one of those very special royal moments for the town. Readers of the Town Crier magazine will already know that there will be a Bun-Throwing on 11th June at 7pm. As in past occasions thousands of people will gather in the Market Place to catch the 4500 buns that will be thrown down to them by the 19 Town Councillors led by the Mayor, Cllr Alice Badcock. But what if you want to be more than a mere catcher? How do you bag yourself a place on the County Hall rooftop to take a front row position in the event? It’s too late to be a Councillor – elections were two years ago – so your only hope is to sign up for the World Bun-Throwing Championships and throw to win. Winners in each category from the Championships taking place this coming Bank Holiday weekend will be asked to assist the Council in the task of throwing the 4500 buns from the roof and it is hoped that they will prove that buns can be thrown as far as Bury Street as is claimed in council legend!
The World Bun Throwing Championships take place on 30th May at the Abingdon Cricket Club. To register turn up at 12 noon on the day.
