Abingdon Urban Race

Monday, 28 August 2017 - 10:00am

~~Think you know Abingdon? Why not try a race with a twist around the complex streets, alleys and parks! With courses of up to 8k for runners, plus shorter ones for families and juniors, why not urban orienteering - it's a popular and fast growing sport, and anyone can take part.

The twist? There's no set route to the courses. It’s a bit like a competitive treasure hunt to find a series of checkpoints around your chosen course.  They’re marked by flags on the ground and you register each one with an electronic timing chip to record your progress, and prove you’ve been to them.  The challenge arises by there being no set route between the checkpoints and you have to choose your own way, using a detailed orienteering map of the streets, alleys and parks of Abingdon.

Race HQ is at Abbey Meadows, close to the town centre car parks. There will be courses for all ages and abilities, including children and families (and longer ones for runners, or mums and dads wanting a longer course!).

This event is organised by Thames Valley Orienteering Club - we're Clubmark accredited. Entry fees on the day (no need to book): £6 for shorter courses, £14 for longer courses (£5 solo juniors). Your entry fee includes a special waterproof map, to keep as a souvenir, plus a print out of your splits and result at the finish.

No experience is necessary to have a go. There will be plenty of help on hand for newcomers.  There will be several courses to choose from, from 1km up to 8km, taking around 30-90 mins to complete.

Just come along on the day, no need to book - any time between 9.45am to 11.00am and don’t forget your sense of adventure!
