Enjoy the Marketplace

Abingdon-on-Thames is a market town that still proudly upholds the tradition of the Market Place as a focus of town life. The Market Place is central, easily reached, and is the scene of important occasions and music festivals but also of weekly and monthly markets, fairs and community events. On any day of the week it's a lovely place to drink tea or a cappuccino in the sunshine, catch up with friends or plan a day out in the town and surrounding area.

There are activities all year round, more in the May to October period.

Bank Holiday Monday 28th May members of our town Civic Society Friends of Abingdon offer a selection of walks on themes. There are walks and quizzes on their own information and there will be a desk in the Market Place at which you can ask about the walks and join one or two.

Monday and every third Friday Markets give good value produce, the farmers' market has many local suppliers. Note no Monday Charter Market on Bank Holiday Mondays.

Summer music festivals, the Craft Fair 28th July and The Oxfordshire Chilli Festival 18th August add to the cheerfulness of the Summer.

More on Autumn events later with Local Excellence on Michaelmas Day 29th September and after Abingdon Fair 8th and 9th October there will be October and November events in commemoration of the 1918 end of war. This had such an impact on town and nation. In the Museum there is a fascinating film of the Market Place with the homecoming of troops and the welcome by families - this is worth several viewings just to look at the faces of the children, their clothes from a century ago in this same place, but most of all Abingdonians being very, very happy.

Christmas Extravaganza, organised by the Abingdon-on-Thames Chamber of Commerce is on Saturday 1st December 2018. Information on the parade late morning, special shopping deals and a few surprises will be announced on

Local clubs and societies are encouraged to use the area to promote their groups and to obtain a licence to fundraise. Click here  for further details on how to book the Market Place for your event. You need agreement and proof of having insurance before applying for any licence please.

Please plan in advance and call in at  Abingdon-on-Thames Information for more information or to check dates.
