In planning and choosing a flight always consider transport costs in relation to distance from airport and factor this in. Bus and train prices can be more expensive than flights.  Car hire including electric cars and taxis may be good value particularly off season.

The River Thames is the longest river in England and runs from the Cotswolds to London – 210 miles (340 km) of glorious riverside scenery running through areas of outstanding beauty.

Hire Boats

Abingdon offers day boat hire, ranging from self-driven small electric and motor boats to rowing boats.  These can  be hired from the Abingdon Boat Centre.

Boat Day Trips

Salters Steamers provide day trips from Abingdon to Oxford, 7-days a week between late May and the September Heritage Open Weekend.  They also provide other boat trips along the Thames.

A Wallingford-Abingdon return trip operates in mid-July and August.  Please check when travelling for a boat excursion as river conditions can vary and Environment Agency locks, speed of water, current, and the height of the river in relation to bridges can affect all riverside towns and villages.

Three main bus operators run services in Oxfordshire to Abingdon-on-Thames.  Each offers real-time information, social media announcements and a phone app.

X3/X13 – Oxford, Abingdon and villages every twenty minutes late evening and every ten minutes in the day, the number 5 bus from Oxford rail station links with this service at St Aldates in Oxford.

35 – Abingdon, Kennington and Radley.  Useful for trains and for the Thames Path.

4 – From Wood Farm and the Churchill hospital through Oxford city centre is now the only bus to Abingdon passing by the rail station in Oxford.  The route serves Botley, Cumnor, Dry Sandford, Wootton, Shippon and the Barracks, the Further Education College and Abingdon town centre.

X2 – Oxford to Abingdon, Drayton, Steventon, Milton Park, Didcot, Brightwell, Wallingford.  This is useful for Wittenham nature reserve and the Thames Path.

32 and 33 – Abingdon to Culham, Sutton Courtenay, Milton village, Milton Park, Didcot and links to Harwell, Harwell Science Centre campus, East and West Hendred, Ardington and Wantage.

41 – daytime town circular, supported financially by the town council.

45 – Abingdon town centre to Culham Science Centre. 

To get to Dorchester-on-Thames, take the bus to Oxford and use the X39 Reading or Henley routes.  Locals can use the Oxfordshire Comet service by registering with Oxfordshire County Council.

Buses between Stratton Way near Abingdon town centre and Oxford city centre are frequent – up to very ten minutes during the day and every twenty minutes even late evening.

Along with the local services, buses run direct from Oxford to London at regular intervals, 24 hours a day.  Oxford Tube buses have stops in north London and the West End and stop on Buckingham Palace Road, not inside Victoria station.
