There are some memorable pieces of modern public art in the town provided by local authorities and private organisations.
Notable sculptures can be viewed in Bury Street, near one entrance to the Abbey Grounds and behind the Abbey Grounds in Thames View. You can also view artworks on buildings and at ground level such as at Ock Bridge Place and at the MG garden. The Vale of White Horse District Council has taken the initiative to place items and a map and a cycle tour of these pieces covers a large part of the town beyond its centre.
Many of the art works were provided through the Percent for Arts scheme, which encourages developers of large new building schemes to make a contribution to a local arts project – see here and here for detailed information on Art in Abingdon.
Public art commissioning in Oxfordshire runs the Percent for Art Scheme and more information on this can be found here.
As part of their town walks series, Abingdon Civic Society have prepared a walk and accompanying leaflet which can be viewed and downloaded here.
