SUMMARY:ATOM Society talk: Lions\, from corncobs to geopolitics
DESCRIPTION:ATOM Society brings you a highly topical talk by Prof. David Macdonald at 19:30 on Tuesday (new weekday this year!) 19th September 2023 in Abingdon United Football Club\, Northcourt Rd\, OX14 1PL\, Abingdon. \nDavid\, working in and around Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe\, with his long-term colleague\, Andrew Loveridge\, has researched landscape planning (the identification of refuges for lion and corridors linking them)\, ways of resolving conflict between farmers and lions\, and the thorny issue of lion trophy hunting. The last of these leapt to international prominence with the killing\, by a Minnesotan crossbow hunter\, of the project’s study-lion nicknamed Cecil. \nProf Macdonald founded the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) in 1986 and is a Wildlife Conservation Fellow at Lady Margaret Hall\, Oxford University. The WildCRU mission is to achieve practical solutions to conservation problems through original scientific research. \nFor more information\, please see atomsociety.org.uk.
