DESCRIPTION:Exploring Abingdon’s fascinating architectural history is the theme of this year’s Heritage Weekend. As the longest continuously inhabited town in Britain there is plenty to see and discover. \n\nVisit our Roysse room exhibition “Abingdon’s Historic buildings – Lost\, Recorded and Understood” to rediscover some of our town’s lost buildings (from mansions to the workhouse)\, view pictures of the town taken during the second world war and find out how to be a “house detective”. Saturday and Sunday 10am – 4pm\nCall in to Unit 25 in Bury Street to see our “Evolving Abingdon” exhibition about what was there before the precinct\, the Charter and Stratton Way – and why it all changed in the 1960s and 70s. Friday – Monday 10am – 4pm\nAlso in Unit 25\, “Reaching for the Stars”: find out about the history of the Culham site from its days as a wartime airfield through to hosting the JET project\, and hear about the latest plans to bring fusion energy onto the grid and into our homes.\nEnjoy a re-enactment of Roman life and witness rural building crafts of a bygone age in the ancient Abbey Buildings. Exhibitions Saturday only 10am – 4pm\, Medieval Buildings open Sunday.\nVisit some of the 12 or more fascinating buildings which are opening: new for this year are the Old Gaol foyer\, the ultra-modern Sophos Building and the Christchurch barn conversion.\nExplore the rich architectural history of our parish church\, St Helens.\nTake a guided walk on the Sunday – or follow one of our self-guided trails.\nTake a treasure trail of Abingdon and discover aspects of our town’s long history told through the buildings.
