SUMMARY:Marcham in Domesday 1065 - Simon Blackmore
DESCRIPTION:Simon’s talk first looks at the village of Marcham in the context of Abingdon Abbey and Anglo Saxon Berkshire.  Then\, with the details available in Domesday\, he considers the changes brought about by the Norman conquest and discusses how much we can learn about the inhabitants of the village of Marcham at that time.  Simon has lived in the parish of Marcham since 1975\, first in Gozzards Ford and then in Mill Road in the heart of the village.  He has had an interest in archaeology and history since his university days and\, since retirement\, from teaching.  He has been involved with the ‘Vale of the White Horse and Ridgeway Archaeology and Historical Trust’ who were responsible with Oxford University for the recent excavations of the Roman temple site on Trendies Field in Frilford.  He has also been a long standing member of the ‘Marcham Society’ which promotes interest in local history and he researched ‘Marcham in Domesday 1086’ for an article in one of its publications.
