DESCRIPTION:Having performed over 700 shows (and counting) since forming in 2019\, True Foxes\, the acclaimed Alt-Country/Americana\, cousin-duo from Cornwall\, are quickly gaining recognition in the UK and beyond. Following the release of their debut album ‘Howl’ in March 2024\, the duo have been featured on numerous international radio stations\, being named as Americana Album of the Month on The Country Mile Radio and UK Country Radio and have received glowing reviews from AmericanaUK\, Rocking Magpie\, and Fatea magazine. \nAmie’s powerful vocals and soulful songwriting has been compared to the likes of Laura Marling and Brandi Carlile\, performing on Acoustic Guitar. A highly regarded instrumentalist to boot\, Sam is renowned by many as “the finest English-style fingerpicking guitarist of his generation” (Jon Boden) and has been described as having a ‘killer voice’ by Ivor Novello- winning musician Nitin Sawhney. \nHis impressive back catalogue and captivating live shows attest to his ability to bring together a diverse set of influences from English folk song and American shapenote singing through to hard rock. Sam has made appearances on national TV\, won a BBC Folk Award\, and has toured the world\, sharing stages with some of folk’s leading lights\, including Richard Thompson\, Eliza Carthy\, Martin Simpson and Nancy Kerr. \nJon Wilks is a singer\, songwriter and acclaimed fingerpicking guitarist whose work is rooted in English folk traditions\, memory\, and place. Described by The Quietus as being at the centre of the current folk scene\, he began by exploring traditional songs from Birmingham and the wider Midlands\, releasing two regionally focused albums: Midlife (2018) and Up the Cut (2021). Before I Knew What Had Begun I Had Already Lost (2023)\, was named Folk Album of the Month in The Guardian\, and his latest\, Needless Alley (2025)\, marks a shift toward original\, autobiographical songwriting. “If you’re looking for a thread\,” he says\, “maybe it’s the way we carry the past with us\, whether we mean to or not. For me\, the album is a patchwork of memories — what you’d find if you rummaged around in my head for an afternoon.” A former journalist for Time Out\, The Guardian\, and Dazed & Confused\, Wilks brings a sharp storytelling sensibility to his songwriting and stagecraft. He founded and was the original editor of Tradfolk.co\, and has been featured regularly on BBC Radio 2’s Folk Show. DESCRIPTION:Travelling troubadour Sorrel Nation brings a soulful mix of folk-rock to country and engages audiences with emotive lyrics\, 70s inspired style and a voice full of soul that can truly open the heart. \n2024 saw multiple new releases from Sorrel including a single featuring Steve Balsamo in May\, the delicate and beautiful live EP ‘Thirty Summers’ in July and the critically acclaimed debut studio album ‘Lost En Route’ in October. Sorrel performed at Black Deer\, Isle of Wight and Cambridge Folk Festivals amongst others and continues to tour the festival circuit over summer with The Magic Teapot music venue in her beloved campervan\, Dory. \nSorrel accomplished two successful UK wide tours in 2024\, including her first ever solo tour in April and first full band tour in October to accompany the release of ‘Lost En Route’\, an album Sorrel is immensely proud of. 2025 has proved to be no different as Sorrel embarked on three tours and exciting festival appearances to promote her debut album and its release on vinyl in March 2025. SUMMARY:An evening of Celtic songs and music
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear Valentine Roland perform songs from Brittany\, Ireland\, Scotland and elsewhere. Valentine is also a talented player of the violin\, guitar and tin whistle. \nShe  began her musical journey at age 14\, performing a repertoire of traditional Celtic ballads at prominent events such as the Normandie Celtic Festival. \nDriven to expand her musical range\, she took up the violin and was accepted into the Conservatoire de musique de Nîmes in France\, where she earned her ABRSM Grade 8 with distinction in 2023. During this time\, she joined the Celtic folk group JigFiz\, performing at numerous concerts across the south of France. \nIn 2023\, Valentine moved to Malaysia\, where she performed with the Penang Symphony Orchestra. Now based in Oxford\, she teaches violin and Celtic fiddle while continuing to perform at various venues in Oxfordshire and France.

DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome Mishra & Deepa Shakthi to Harwell Village Hall. \nIn 2022\, Danny Kyle award winning global-folk band Mishra began a new cross cultural collaboration with international fusion vocalist Deepa Shakthi. The resulting album ‘Turn O Spinning Wheel’\, set for release in October 2025\, is brimming with multilingually reimagined folk songs\, new compositions\, and swirling Celtic melodies underpinned by hypnotic qawwali grooves. Mishra\, who have extensively toured the UK and had BBC R2 airplay for their 2 previous albums\, draw from UK folk roots and an instrumental palette including low whistle\, tabla\, banjo\, clarinet\, and double bass. Deepa Shakthi (formerly Deepa Nair Rasiya) has a vast repertoire of songs from the Indian subcontinent and over 30 years experience of performing in cross-cultural projects\, which has seen her work with Opera North\, Kuljit Bhamra\, London Contemporary Voices\, and even Ravi Shankar and George Harrison on the album ‘Chants of India’. When Mishra and Deepa get on stage together\, their joyous performances are a journey of contrasts\, from hand-clapping trance-like sufi songs to spacious stillness and reflection. Together you will then go on to further study and critique his paintings and poems in a session of discussion and discovery. Equipped with a new-found knowledge of Couldrey’s style and his creative techniques it will then be your turn to take to the streets of Abingdon. In an homage to the artist – who influences Helen’s own colour palette and style of composition – you will study the historic town’s architecture and meandering streets\, and begin the process of creating your own responses. SUMMARY:The Couldrey Painting and Poetry Course\, led by Artist-Teacher Helen Edwards
DESCRIPTION:This six-week course inspired by Oswald Couldrey – arguably Abingdon’s most famous artist and poet of the 20th century – offers a journey through drawing\, poetry\, photography and contemporary painting techniques. \n\nRunning every Friday from 20 February to 27 March\, 10am to 12pm in the Museum Kempster Room\, there are 10 places available for this course.\nBooking is essential\, a place costs £180 which includes materials.\nContact the Museum reception to book and make payment – 01235 523703\nor email abingdon.museum@abingdon.gov.uk. \n\nInitially\, Helen will guide you through Couldrey’s exhibition which is on display at Abingdon Museum for the first three months of 2026. Together you will then go on to further study and critique his paintings and poems in a session of discussion and discovery. Equipped with a new-found knowledge of Couldrey’s style and his creative techniques it will then be your turn to take to the streets of Abingdon. In an homage to the artist – who influences Helen’s own colour palette and style of composition – you will study the historic town’s architecture and meandering streets\, and begin the process of creating your own responses. Using his poems to help your aesthetic response\, you will photograph\, draw and paint the contemporary town through a Couldrey-style lens.\nThis will help to develop your understanding of perspective through drawing\, your composition skills and how colour pallets influence the artist. You will then be working with contemporary painting techniques that will further enhance your skills and build on the range and style of media you use in your art.\nThe course will culminate in writing your own poems inspired by your artwork and the town of Abingdon. \n*Good cameras are not necessary\, a phone camera will be fine. \nHelen J S Edwards studied BA Fine Art and later completed an MA in Artist-Teacher Practice at Oxford Brookes University.
