SUMMARY:Exhibition: A Geologist's Guide to Abingdon
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition will provide some background and context to our many fossil finds in the collection\, starting with an introduction to rock strata and how they were discovered by William Smith over 200 years ago. \nAbingdon stands on a layer of Jurassic rock called Kimmeridge Clay. In that period\, the continents as we know them today had not formed yet\, and Abingdon was submerged in a shallow sea. This is why most of the fossils found in Abingdon are of marine creatures. There were some coastal areas nearby\, though\, as proven by the finds of dinosaur footprints at Ardley near Bicester.\nWe also put Abingdon into the context of other rock strata from the Jurassic period which are present in the wider Abingdon area\,\nand how they can be observed in the landscape. \nThis exhibition will go up in the Sessions Gallery of the Museum. In May it will be joined by a second display in the Attic\, showcasing recent fossil finds here in Abingdon. \nFree Admission

SUMMARY:Eliza Marshall solo - 'New Birth' EP Launch gig
DESCRIPTION:Eliza Marshall solo – ‘New Birth’ EP tour \nStep into a rich world of sound with acclaimed flautist and composer Eliza Marshall\, as she brings her debut solo EP New Birth to life in the intimate setting of The Unicorn Theatre. \nKnown for her mesmerising work with folk collective Ranagri\, and for recording with the likes of Peter Gabriel\, Stevie Wonder\, Florence & The Machine\, and Paul McCartney\, Eliza now steps into the spotlight with a bold new sound that crosses continents and genres. \n‘New Birth’ is unlike anything I’ve written before. It pushes me far beyond my comfort zone. It’s filled with tribal chanting vocals\, powerful percussive layers\, lots of whistles and electronics. I’ve had a whole range of influences in my life that are beyond classical music\, which have shaped the musician I am today – a mix of many different genres. I don’t believe artists need to be confined to a single style. I love the idea of cross-pollination\, of sharing influences and\nideas across cultures globally. I hope this spirit of openness and exchange comes through.’ \nNew Birth – recorded between Real World Studios and Dakar\, Senegal and releasing May 23 on Real World X –  blends haunting flute melodies with West African percussion\, hypnotic balafon rhythms\, tribal chants\, and ambient electronics. \nThis is not just a gig. It’s a journey through sound\, spirit\, and global connection.
