SUMMARY:Exhibition - Abingdon 1945
DESCRIPTION:2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War 2\, and our exhibition looks back at Abingdon in war and peace in 1945. Learn how the war impacted the lives of local people through food shortages\, the threat of air raids\, war work in the industries\, and the influx of evacuees and armed forces personnel. Take a closer look at the roles of women and how they experienced the war and the post-war period. The exhibition also looks at the changes the peace brought\, how people celebrated VE and VJ Day\, what happened when the soldiers returned home\, and how a decision taken in 1945 changed the face of the town with the coming of the ‘Atomics’. \nFrom 4th October to 23rd December 2025\n \n \nPlease join us for the final talk of the Museum’s WWII history series ‘1945 -The End of the Third Reich’ presented by BBC Radio Nottingham’s History Advisor Gareth Howell .\n \nPlease book your tickets at the Museum Reception\nor online at https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/abingdon-museum  \nFriday 7th November at 7pm.\nLocation: The Roysse Room\, Bridge Street\, Abingdon.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: A Geologist's Guide to Abingdon
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition will provide some background and context to our many fossil finds in the collection\, starting with an introduction to rock strata and how they were discovered by William Smith over 200 years ago. \nAbingdon stands on a layer of Jurassic rock called Kimmeridge Clay. In that period\, the continents as we know them today had not formed yet\, and Abingdon was submerged in a shallow sea. This is why most of the fossils found in Abingdon are of marine creatures. There were some coastal areas nearby\, though\, as proven by the finds of dinosaur footprints at Ardley near Bicester.\nWe also put Abingdon into the context of other rock strata from the Jurassic period which are present in the wider Abingdon area\,\nand how they can be observed in the landscape. \nThis exhibition will go up in the Sessions Gallery of the Museum. In May it will be joined by a second display in the Attic\, showcasing recent fossil finds here in Abingdon. \nFree Admission

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Atomics to Medieval Knights
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to the positive visitors’ feedback and high attendance\, we are happy to let you know that the exhibition “Atomics to Medieval Knights – a history of Fitzharris Manor Estate” has been extended until Sunday 6th April.  \nThis tells the story of Fitzharris Manor\, from its beginning after the Norman Conquest\, when it was granted to a knight called Owen or Oin. One of his descendants was called Fitzharry\, whose name attached itself to the Manor and is still reflected in the modern housing estate. We track the history of the Manor through time\, and how the Manor House changed with a succession of owners. The exhibition then focusses on the coming of the AERE research establishment at Harwell\, which brought an influx of new people to the town – the “Atomics”. In order to provide housing for them\, a new estate was built on the site of Fitzharris Manor – the Fitzharris Estate. The exhibition looks at the construction\, the design\, and the people’s life on the estate and how the coming of the Atomics changed the town. It also lifts the lid on what went on at Harwell\, and some events which shaped world history but took place right on our doorstep. Much of the research into the history of the estate has been done by Mike Evans of the Fitzharris Estate Residents Association\, whose support makes the exhibition possible.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: VAULTS by Artist Tom Crask
DESCRIPTION:“For a long as I can remember I have been interested in pillboxes and bunkers\, the kind of wartime structures that were cast in concrete only to be discarded upon landscapes that later drastically changed. As objects totally divorced from their original context\, they have always possessed a sense of mystery.\nThe Vaults series takes this early fascination as a starting point and mixes it with a later interest in Brutalist architecture.\nThey are intended as objects of ambiguity\, for which purpose and intention are purposefully left void.\nThey are constructed using bespoke moulds made from plastic card. The structure is created in reverse\, both upside down and in negative. The plastic mould allows for a very smooth finish\, where the only features present are those that have been deliberately placed.” \nArtist Tom Crask \nTom Crask’s exhibition ‘Vaults’ is displayed in the Attic Gallery from 5th November to 22nd December. \nFREE ADMISSION

SUMMARY:‘Historic Building Mythbusting’ - A talk by Dr.James Wright of Triskele Heritage
DESCRIPTION:From June 2024 onwards\, James Wright of Triskele Heritage will be setting off on a promotional book tour after the release of Historic Building Mythbusting – Uncovering Folklore\, History and Archaeology. He will be at Abingdon Museum on Thursday 12th September for a presentation lasting 45-60 minutes\, Q&A session\, and people will have the opportunity to pick up a signed copy of the book. \nHe will give two talks at 12pm and 2pm in Abingdon Museum’s Kempster room (museum basement) on Thursday 12 September 2024. This floor is also accessible via lift. \n£10 per ticket. Booking essential as tickets limited to 20 for each talk.  \nPlease click here to book your ticket or visit https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/abingdon-museum \n  \nJames Wright is a regular on Channel 4’s The Great British Dig and on BBC Radio 4’s The Hidden History Of…; plus\, he has made appearances on documentaries such as Time Team (Channel 4)\, Mystic Britain (Smithsonian Channel)\, and Unearthed (Discovery Science). \nGo to any ancient building and there will be interesting\, exciting\, and romantic stories presented to the visitor. They are commonly believed and widely repeated – but are they really true? These stories include those of secret passages linking ancient buildings\, spiral staircases in castles giving advantage to right-handed defenders\, ship timbers used in the construction of buildings on land\, blocked doors in churches which are thought to keep the Devil out and claims to be the oldest pub in the city. \nJames Wright will explain the development of such myths and investigate the underlying truths behind them. Sometimes the realities hiding behind the stories are even more interesting\, romantic\, and exciting than the myth itself… \nThe speaker\, James Wright (Triskele Heritage)\, is an award winning buildings archaeologist. He has two decades professional experience of ferreting around in people’s cellars\, hunting through their attics and digging up their gardens. He hopes to find meaningful truths about how ordinary and extraordinary folk lived their lives in the mediaeval period. He is the author of the popular Mediaeval Mythbusting Blog

SUMMARY:Exhibition - ABINGDON’S OPPIDUM: trade and crafts in an Iron Age settlement
DESCRIPTION:For this summer we have put together another archaeological exhibition: ‘ABINGDON’S OPPIDUM: trade and crafts in an Iron Age Settlement’ from Saturday 6th July to Sunday 29th September 2024. \n‘Oppidum’ is a Latin word meaning ‘town’. Archaeologists apply the term to certain large Late Iron Age settlements\, often with defences around them\, in Britain and other parts of western and central Europe. These were not ordinary farming settlements. They often seem to have been involved in manufacturing goods and in trade\, and may also have been centres of power. Our exhibition looks at Iron Age life in the Abingdon oppidum\, the crafts its people practised\, the trade connections and the relationship with the landscape and other settlements in the area. \nFree Admission \nLocation: Sessions Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition: “Celebrating Abingdon Women in the Arts and Sciences”
DESCRIPTION:In our first exhibition for 2024 Abingdon Museum will be “Celebrating Abingdon Women in the Arts and Sciences”. It will highlight the lives of remarkable women\, some who lived in Abingdon and made major contributions to the cultural life of the town\, some who came from Abingdon and went out into the world to accomplish great things. In the visual arts they are Pat Russell and Janet Boulton\, who set up their own paper-making studio\, and Charlotte Hardcastle\, whose delicate and highly accurate botanical drawings are preserved in a New Zealand museum. Representing the written word they are Dorothy Richardson\, who wrote some of the first modernist novels\, and historian Agnes Baker\, who bridged literature and history by bringing local history to life through plays and pageants. Also from the field of history are Gabrielle Lambrick\, who researched the history of Abingdon Abbey in particular\, and was an important member of two societies dedicated to local history; Mieneke Cox\, who told the story of Abingdon through the museum displays and a series of books; and Marion Wenzel who was the curator of the Abbey Buildings and researched one of Abingdon’s most intriguing archaeological finds\, the Islamic Glass. Representing science is Mary Buckland\, née Morland\, who made important contributions to palaeontology\, particularly with her detailed drawings of fossils\, including those of Megalosaurus\, the first scientifically described dinosaur. \nIn telling the stories of these women we want to highlight the contributions women have made in all fields of endeavour\, but also emphasise their connection with Abingdon – something our town can be proud of. \n  \nLocation: Sessions Gallery (First Floor) \nFree Admission
