SUMMARY:The Couldrey Painting and Poetry Course\, led by Artist-Teacher Helen Edwards
DESCRIPTION:This six-week course inspired by Oswald Couldrey – arguably Abingdon’s most famous artist and poet of the 20th century – offers a journey through drawing\, poetry\, photography and contemporary painting techniques. \n\nRunning every Friday from 20 February to 27 March\, 10am to 12pm in the Museum Kempster Room\, there are 10 places available for this course.\nBooking is essential\, a place costs £180 which includes materials.\nContact the Museum reception to book and make payment – 01235 523703\nor email abingdon.museum@abingdon.gov.uk. \n\nInitially\, Helen will guide you through Couldrey’s exhibition which is on display at Abingdon Museum for the first three months of 2026. Together you will then go on to further study and critique his paintings and poems in a session of discussion and discovery. Equipped with a new-found knowledge of Couldrey’s style and his creative techniques it will then be your turn to take to the streets of Abingdon. In an homage to the artist – who influences Helen’s own colour palette and style of composition – you will study the historic town’s architecture and meandering streets\, and begin the process of creating your own responses. Using his poems to help your aesthetic response\, you will photograph\, draw and paint the contemporary town through a Couldrey-style lens.\nThis will help to develop your understanding of perspective through drawing\, your composition skills and how colour pallets influence the artist. You will then be working with contemporary painting techniques that will further enhance your skills and build on the range and style of media you use in your art.\nThe course will culminate in writing your own poems inspired by your artwork and the town of Abingdon. \n*Good cameras are not necessary\, a phone camera will be fine. \nHelen J S Edwards studied BA Fine Art and later completed an MA in Artist-Teacher Practice at Oxford Brookes University.

SUMMARY:Honey & the Bear with support TBC
DESCRIPTION:We’re pleased to welcome back to The Unicorn Theatre Honey & the Bear who have been a tour de force on the UK Folk Festival circuit in recent years. The British folk and roots duo combine delicately interweaving vocal harmonies with emotive and evocative songwriting. With a diverse range of sounds and textures\,and rhythms that flow from the fast and furious to gentle ballads\, their live performances are spirited and dynamic. Conjuring stories in song\, they tell tales of Suffolk folklore\, courageous people they admire and their passion for nature which has been enchanting audiences up and down the country. \nThe multi-instrumentalist\, husband and wife team comprised of songwriters Jon Hart (guitar\, bass\, bouzouki) and Lucy Hart (guitar\, ukulele\, bass\, banjo\, mandolin & percussion)\, are often joined on-stage by band guests Evan Carson (percussion)\, Toby Shaer (Fiddle/Flutes/Whistles) and Archie Churchill-Moss (diatonic button accordion) who feature on all three Honey & The Bear studio albums. Together they have played at many revered venues and festivals across the UK as well as travelled across the channel. \nIn November 2023 they released their latest album ‘Away Beyond the Fret’\, their most personal album yet\, featuring stories and folklore of all things close to their heart including their home in Suffolk\, nature\, family\, history and community. The album has received much critical acclaim including 5 stars from the Morning Star. Shortlisted as FATEAs best band of 2023\, they are continuing to enjoy performing their repertoire live as part of their 10 Year Anniversary Tour this year.\n2020 and the onset of the coronavirus pandemic saw the duo grounded and all gigs cancelled\, but their music prevailed in the form of Sunday night facebook livestreams of which they performed thirty-two throughout the year 2020. After challenging themselves to write a new song for the first 12 weeks of the livestream\, they successfully managed to produce a second album. \n‘Journey Through the Roke’ was released on 23rd April 2021. The album features many talented musicians including Toby Shaer (whistles\, harmonium\, flute\, fiddle\, bass)\, Evan Carson (drums\, bodhran\, percussion)\, Archie Churchill Moss of Moore Moss Rutter (melodeon) and Graham Coe of The Jellyman’s Daughter (cello). ‘Journey Through the Roke’ has received airplay on the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show. \nTheir first full studio album ‘Made In The Aker’ (released July 2019) was followed by a UK tour as a four piece band in October 2019. The album was well received by both their ever growing fan base and the critics. Born and raised in Suffolk\, Lucy learned violin and drums at school\, sung in the Suffolk Jubilee choir and started songwriting at age 15. She taught herself guitar whilst at university in Canterbury\, and began performing her creations not long afterwards. At 27\, she released her debut band album ’Step Right On’\, songs from which you now hear her perform with Jon. Jon\, a Yorkshire boy\, raised in Cambridgeshire\, Norfolk and Suffolk\, has been performing his own songs since his teens. A self taught guitarist\, his love of driving guitar riffs is a core aspect of his song writing process. He has released three band albums\, the latest of which was entitled ‘Level with me’\, featuring ‘wristburner’ which is a gig favourite. \n“a celebration of nature\, history\, family and community. Truly in the folk tradition.” – Steve Johnson – Morning Star \n“Dexterously played with beautifully crafted arrangements around a perfect pairing of voices delivering personal\nfine songs this is a stunning album.” – Marc Higgins – FATEA \n“This album is one of the clearest recordings I’ve heard in a decade\, holding its head above the roke and into the\nsunlight on every track” – Seán Laffey\, Irish Music Magazine \n“The vocals of Lucy are as beautiful as ever….and she is now one of this country’s best folk singers” – Stephen Foster\,\nRadio Caroline & EADT \nSupport TBC \nDors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:15pm

SUMMARY:Active Buggies at Southern Town Park\, Abingdon
DESCRIPTION:An outdoor fitness session designed for post-natal participants \nExercises will consist of fast walking\, jogging and a bit of running with or without the buggy\, but feel free to do what makes you feel comfortable. I give everyone the option as most people won’t be at the running stages just yet! We do a mixture of squats and lunges; these again can be done with or without the buggy and we do other exercises that work the upper body as well as the lower body. I also do some floor exercises where we work on strengthening the core muscles – nothing too strenuous.

SUMMARY:NT Live: The Audience
DESCRIPTION:Returning to cinemas for the first time in over a decade\, Helen Mirren plays Queen Elizabeth II in the Olivier and Tony Award® -winning hit production\, directed by Stephen Daldry. \nFor 60 years\, Queen Elizabeth II met with each of her 12 prime ministers in a private weekly meeting. This meeting is known as The Audience. From Winston Churchill to Margaret Thatcher and David Cameron\, the Queen advised her prime ministers on matters both public and personal. Through these private audiences\, we see glimpses of the woman behind the crown and witness the moments that shaped a monarch. \nPeter Morgan’s Netflix phenomenon The Crown was based on this hit play that was captured live from London’s West End in 2013 and went on to become one of the most-watched NT Live productions. \nThis production has an approximate running time of 149 minutes (including a 15 minute interval). \nThis production has been rated 12 (tbc) by BBFC.
