SUMMARY:Exhibition: VAULTS by Artist Tom Crask
DESCRIPTION:“For a long as I can remember I have been interested in pillboxes and bunkers\, the kind of wartime structures that were cast in concrete only to be discarded upon landscapes that later drastically changed. As objects totally divorced from their original context\, they have always possessed a sense of mystery.\nThe Vaults series takes this early fascination as a starting point and mixes it with a later interest in Brutalist architecture.\nThey are intended as objects of ambiguity\, for which purpose and intention are purposefully left void.\nThey are constructed using bespoke moulds made from plastic card. The structure is created in reverse\, both upside down and in negative. The plastic mould allows for a very smooth finish\, where the only features present are those that have been deliberately placed.” \nArtist Tom Crask \nTom Crask’s exhibition ‘Vaults’ is displayed in the Attic Gallery from 5th November to 22nd December. \nFREE ADMISSION

SUMMARY:SUNNINGWELL SCHOOL OF ART WINTER SHORT COURSES
DESCRIPTION:ONE DAY WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOP – WOOD YOU BELIEVE IT? \nSometimes\, when going for a walk\, perhaps late in the evening\, we come across pieces of wood lurking in hedgerows which could easily be mistaken for some strange creature. I have a whole box full which live with me at home.\nI will start by introducing them to you and we can draw and paint from them objectively first and then let our imaginations go\, perhaps telling a story through anthropomorphisation\, such as that of St. George and the Dragon. Many painters have illustrated the story of St George and the Dragon\, Paolo Ucello (1470)\, Raphael (1505)\, Rogier van der Weyden (1432)\, Gustave Moreau (1889) to name a few\, and dragons exist in many other cultures especially in the east where they are sometimes protective rather than threatening.\nPlease bring any medium you enjoy using which would be good for exploring the textures involved. If you are not sure\, watercolour combined with pastel and/or pen and ink would be good. And if you have a favourite piece of wood of your own\, please feel free to bring it along.

SUMMARY:SUNNINGWELL SCHOOL OF ART WINTER SHORT COURSES
DESCRIPTION:TWO DAY PORTRAITURE IN CLAY WORKSHOP FOR ALL \nDuring this two-day course students will create a portrait head in clay which will then be fired in our kiln.\nPaying special attention to mark-making and the impact of expressive gestures\, students will create a portrait of a life model. This course will show how to use an armature to speed up the process of sculpting a portrait. Using the assistance of the armature will encourage students to concentrate on the surface of the clay and discover how texture can inform and influence the work.\nWelcoming absolute beginners and those experienced in working with clay\, the course invites students to experiment with the clay surface. Using either sculpting tools or their hands\, students are encouraged to find texture in the shaping of the clay and find how that texture can assist their expression.\nClay can be bought separately from the school.\nBeginners welcome

SUMMARY:SUNNINGWELL SCHOOL OF ART WINTER SHORT COURSES
DESCRIPTION:TWO DAY CERAMICS WORKSHOP – Make your own Staffordshire Flatback for all levels \nLearn how to hand-build traditional style Flatback ceramics as you find inspiration in these humble folk-art pieces. Explore a range of decorative and making skills and create a personal narrative.\nThis course is an opportunity to explore the traditional Staffordshire Flatback mantlepiece figure and create Flatbacks with your own narrative. By the end of the course you will have gained an understanding of the history of the Flatback as well as experience of traditional skills\, such as: sprigging\, granulation\, impressing\, pinching\, coiling techniques and multi-hued underglaze painting on greenware.\nRose will explore why this much-overlooked folk-art object was a powerful medium for our collective social history.\nComplete beginners are welcome and will be appropriately supported. Students with experience will be able to create more complex work. Students can create either a single or pair of Flatbacks to be fired\, and glazed with transparent glaze by Rose\, to be ready for collection on Monday 23rd December.\nWhat students need to bring:\nPlease bring any personal small textured items to embellish your narrative. These could include non-precious jewellery\, natural found objects; shells\, leaves or domestic items; buttons\, lace etc.
