SUMMARY:Grim Dark Gaming Society
DESCRIPTION:The Grim Dark Gaming Society has been going since January 2023 and provides facilities and equipment for Science Fiction and table-top gaming. \nWe provide a space to discuss\, paint and play fantasy and sci-fi games. We also offer a safe place to play\, paint and meet like-minded people with the same interest. Beginners and experienced players are all welcome. \nThe society is a non-profit organisation made to further enjoyment of the hobby in all aspects. It is also a great opportunity for players to play games with new people and expand participants’ knowledge and passion for Warhammer and similar strategy games. Whilst these are the main games played there is always room for others and we have board games such as\, Rumble Slam\, Scythe and many more. \nThe club is based above the willows shake shop at the heart of Abingdon town centre and sessions take place on Mondays and Wednesday between 6:30pm and 10:00pm. On Saturday it starts at 10:30am and ends at 4:00pm. There will always be one committee member at each session to welcome you\, and of course me on a Wednesday. \nIf you want to know more you can email (bloodandwar40@gmail.com) or check out our website (https:/a-grim-dark-gaming-society.square.site/). \nIn the evenings and at the weekend you can get refreshments downstairs such as milkshakes\, coffee tea and cold drinks so there’s a wide variety of hot or cold food available\, depending on your taste. All in all this is a great opportunity for people who want to play strategy games for a small fee or you can watch the games and seek advice for free.

SUMMARY:Ninebarrow
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome Ninebarrow back to Harwell. \nNinebarrow (Jon Whitley and Jay LaBouchardiere) are a multi-award-winning folk duo\, who are impressing audiences across the country with their innovative and captivating take on the folk tradition. Described by Mark Radcliffe as sounding ‘like two halves of one voice’ and by Mercury Music Prize nominee Kate Rusby as ‘absolutely amazing’\, Jon and Jay combine breath taking vocal harmonies and melodies\, delivering original songs that are inspired and rooted in the landscape and history of the British Isles. As well as crafting unique and engaging original material\, Ninebarrow also take a wide-range of traditional folk songs and rework them in their own\, distinctive way.\nJon and Jay relinquished their respective full-time jobs as a teacher and GP back in 2016 and took a leap of faith into the music business – a gamble that almost immediately paid off. In 2017\, they were nominated for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award: one of the highest accolades in the world of folk music and clear recognition for their outstanding harmonies\, high production values\, poetic lyricism and magical instrumentation. \nNamed after Nine Barrow Down in Dorset’s Purbeck hills\, the duo have produced four critically acclaimed albums with their 2021 record\, ‘A Pocket Full of Acorns’\, released to a raft of four and five star reviews in the folk and mainstream media. This arboreal-titled album brought with it a very special initiative which saw the pair planting 1\,000 native English trees (half of them oaks) and 200 shrubs to form The Ninebarrow Woodland on three acres of land near Gillingham in north Dorset – today the young woodland is burgeoning\, alive with myriad avian visitors and a flower glade. \nNever short of ideas\, the duo embraced the COVID lockdown period with a run of technically astute streamed gigs in indoor and outdoor settings (they continue today) which\, at their peak\, saw more than 2\,000 people tuning in as well as masterminding a special collaboration with two choirs (Hart Voices and Chantry Singers) to produce the charity single The Hour of the Blackbird which raised funds for mental health charity MIND. Keen walkers\, they have also penned two books of Dorset walks (with a third on the way) and for the past few years have run incredibly popular ‘musical walking holidays’ on Dorset’s magical Isle of Purbeck. \nAs they celebrate their first decade and prepare to release their fifth studio album\, it is clear that the name of Ninebarrow has become synonymous with one word – quality. The highly atmospheric ‘The Colour of Night’ (release date: 1st September 2023) is their first release in two-and-a-half years – and is a record that takes their remarkable success story to yet another level. \nSays Jon: “This collection is released in the tenth year since we picked up a ukulele and decided to have a go at singing some songs together. We feel like we’ve come a long way since then – we’re packing a few more instruments in the car for a start! The world has certainly felt a bit topsy-turvy since our last album but we are lucky to have received wonderful support that kept our spirits high – some of the songs here reflect that sentiment.” \nEngaging\, charismatic and humorous – Ninebarrow are winning new fans wherever they go. See them live\, and you’ll quickly understand why. \nThere is no support for this event – Ninebarrow will be on at 7:30pm \nDoors and bar 6:45pm\, music at 7:30pm

SUMMARY:Knight & Spiers with support from Craig Joiner
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome the return of the brilliant Peter Knight and John Spiers to The Unicorn Theatre. Last year they played to a sold out audience. \nThe exquisite explorations of the liminal space that exists between traditional and classical music is what makes the music of Peter Knight and John Spiers so compelling and beguiling\, ultimately rendering genres irrelevant. \nThe duo has developed into one of the most thrilling exponents of traditional tunes and songs\, repurposing the material as jumping-off points into the most enchanting exploration. It’s largely through touring as a duo that they’ve been able to develop what has become an extraordinary partnership\, giving them the confidence to record their latest studio album\, Both in a Tune. Released in 2022\, it was chosen as one of the ‘10 Best New Albums from Around the World’ by the influential music journal\, SONGLINES. \nWhile Peter Knight\, as part of Steeleye Span’s classic 1970s line-up\, helped invent a brand of folk rock that is still influential today\, John Spiers as co-founder of the almighty Bellowhead has had an equally profound impact on the landscape of traditional music over the last two decades. \nThe pairing of violin and melodeon is not a new one\, but in the hands of Knight and Spiers\, improvisation and invention meet the listener at every turn. Together they have created a musical document that resonates with history\, but also something that should inspire future generations of musicians to engage with Britain’s folk dancing heritage\, and the beautiful\, mysterious tunes that can be found within that heritage. \nThese uniquely gifted musicians make a sublime pairing\, and create a live performance to be remembered for a long time. \n“An extraordinary collaboration between two musicians at the absolute top of their game. This is an adventure that takes in musical detours you’d be mad to ignore” – Tradfolk \n“A beautiful snapshot of two musicians at the pinnacle of their craft. Listeners will find themselves lost in something magical; anyone will struggle to find something as masterful as this for a long\, long time” – Bright Young Folk \nSupport will be from Craig Joiner. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:15pm.
