36th Royal Bun Throwing – Saturday 11th June 2016
The Royal Bun-Throwing Ceremony to celebrate the 90th Birthday of HM the Queen will take place on Saturday 11th June 2016. This is believed to be the 36th occasion on which the ceremony has been performed.
Roads in the town centre will close at 5pm ahead of the ceremony. Abingdon Town Band and the Abingdon Tradtional Morris Dancers will both perform ahead of the Mayor leading the Council to the County Hall. Following the singing of the National Anthem the Mayor will then throw the first of 4,500 buns at 7pm.
The Town Council are very grateful to Tesco who is sponsoring both events by providing the buns free of charge and also to the Vale of White Horse District Council who are supporting the Bun Throwing event with a grant from their fund for HM the Queen’s 90th Birthday celebrations.
Road closures: At 5pm the A415 northbound will be closed at the “Waggon and Horses” with a diversion in operation via Culham. The A415 east/ southbound will be closed at Stert Street (north, at the Stratton Way junction), with all traffic diverted via the Vineyard.
In relation to access and the numbers expected at the event, you are advised to arrive well before 7pm in order to get a good place. If possible please consider walking or cycling to the event to avoid being delayed by and adding to congestion.
Arrangements for parents with buggies/ prams, those in wheelchairs and with special needs: there will be a separate area set aside to the west of the flowerbed on the Market Place. Please make yourself known to a steward to enter this area.
