SUMMARY:Christian Walker - Coleshill: National Trust's Heritage & Rural Skills Centre
DESCRIPTION:The Buscot and Coleshill Estate was largely taken on for the great Coleshill House\, built in the 1650s it struck a new model in design\, layout and craftsmanship that was to influence the English country houses for centuries.  Sadly the house burned down during its restoration and before it was legally gifted to the National Trust.  The estate became a sleeping giant covering over 7500 acres with over 1000 buildings and structures.  It  inspired many craftspeople and artists including William Morris\, Michie Herbert and Katherine Pleydell-Bouverie.  An idea emerged in 2017 to engage\, the National Trust’s first Heritage and Rural Skills Centre champions dying skills including connecting children and young people with skills.  Christian Walker\, General Manager for West Oxfordshire National Trust\, will take you through how the idea developed and how spaces were given new uses\, with the new ways of working being established to secure long term future for buildings on the estate and what future projects look like as the vision for a renewed creative estate is realised.

SUMMARY:Gareth Morris – The Story of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution
DESCRIPTION:RNLI lifeboat crews protect hundreds of communities around the UK and Ireland through their 24-hour search and rescue service.  The 238 lifeboat stations of the RNLI create a ring of safety around the coasts of the UK and Ireland.  Some have been housing lifeboats for decades\, others are specially built to tackle the unique geography of the UK and Irish coastlines. Whether they’re in the heart of a busy harbour\, at the bottom of a cliff face\, or on a busy waterway\, they are all uniquely placed to provide the quickest response to a call for help.  Gareth has been a life governor of the RNLI since 1984 and is now a volunteer education presenter and a water safety adviser.

SUMMARY:Tea\, Coffee and Chocolate: How the British First Fell in Love with Caffeine
DESCRIPTION:Tea\, coffee and chocolate play an important part in the modern British diet.  Most people may not know that tea originated in China\, coffee was allegedly discovered by a goat herder in Yemen\, and chocolate plantations were cultivated in 400 BC by the Olmecs in South America. but did you know that these exotic beverages all arrived in London between 1650 and 1657\, causing immense anxiety and debate?  This lively talk explains why Europeans were at first so terrified of these drinks: pregnant mothers feared their babies would turn brown if they drank too much chocolate\, men claimed tea-drinking caused women to become peevish with their husbands\, whilst women felt hard done by in the bedroom if men drank coffee: it supposedly caused their ‘ammunition to be wanting’.  We will also learn about some of the ingenious ways they were consumed in the eighteenth century.  All Melanie’s talks are related to research undertaken for books published by Bodleian Library Publications\, amongst others.  This talk is one result of Melanie’s extensive experience.

SUMMARY:Abingdon Ladies Choir – If we cannot fly let us sing: A winter warm up of song
DESCRIPTION:The Abingdon Ladies’ Choir has been in existence under the auspices of the Abingdon Music Centre for many years.  The first meeting was in The Old Gaol before moving to the Abbey Baptist Church and more recently\, after the challenge and social joy of Zoom sessions during the pandemic\, meeting in the Church and then The Barn at Christ Church on Northcourt Road.  This is a group of ladies who rise to the challenge of three or sometimes four part part singing and love the social benefits being a member of such an enthusiastic\, fun loving\, music loving\, friendly choir.  Before Covid they were two choirs but at present are functioning as just one\, singing together on Tuesday afternoons during term time\, primarily concerned with the enjoyment and well being of singing together. New members are always welcome and there is no need to be able to read music.  There are no auditions.  If you would be interested in joining us do speak to us afterwards or contact Abingdon Music Centre on 07934 364940.

SUMMARY:Richard Kirby - Rotary: In Abingdon for good - not many people know that
DESCRIPTION:The perception of many is that Rotary is a lunch club for old men.  Yes\, you can find that style of club if you look hard\, but increasingly Rotary is changing into a service organisation working for the good of the world.  For example\, the Rotary Club of Maidenhead Bridge\, meet with their toddler children in a coffee shop on Sunday Mornings.  There are e-clubs which span vast distances and only meet online\, and so on.  Richard’s club meets in the pub on Wednesday evenings\, where they have a drink together and plan events which will benefit the community and raise money for local and international charity.  In his talk\, Richard will look at the origins of Rotary\, the organisation required to control 1¼ million Rotarians\, its values and achievements which are possibly unknown to you\, and how it manifests itself in today’s community\, doing good.  Richard has been an active Rotarian for 15 years\, a Paul Harris Fellow\, President of the Abingdon Club on two occasions and chairs the working group that manages the Rotary international post-graduate scholars in Thames Valley; 31 this year\, bringing in some £1½ million to the local economy.  He is a mechanical engineer turned statistician\, still occasionally working for the company he set up some 20 years ago as a hobby during his retirement.  Only known to many in Abingdon as the quizmaster of DNAPQ\, a style of quiz he conceived in 2014.

SUMMARY:Brian Freeland - View from the Wings
DESCRIPTION:This talk developed from Brian’s experiences with everything from variety (Butlins and the London Palladium) to the Royal Shakespeare Company\, National Theatre\, Scottish Opera and Sadler’s Wells Ballet.  The stage manager’s view from the prompt corner is very different to that from a comfortable seat in the Stalls or Circle. Reality theatre – no retakes\, and ‘slightly saucy’.  Brian’s career started in 1959\, direct from National Service\, as a trainee manager at the London Palladium and it has taken him to 43 different countries including 3 residencies in the Middle East\, 8 tours of the Indian sub-continent and around the globe twice.  Approaching retirement\, he branched out into directing amateur dramatics\, writing scripts and giving talks – and finally found time to write his long-promised autobiography called “Meanderings: a River and a Life”.

SUMMARY:The Road to Peace is Paved with Headstones: The work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission\, its history and legacy.
DESCRIPTION:As we commemorate the anniversaries of The Great War and The Second World War there has been much focus on remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.  This talk highlights the role played by those men and women who established an organisation\, now known as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission\, so that remembrance of their sacrifice will endure in perpetuity.  We look at the architectural and physical characteristics of the cemeteries and memorials as well as the underlying principles that govern their design.  In addition\, we will have a brief introduction to the Commission’s presence in Oxfordshire and the surrounding area.  Dick Richards is a ‘Champion’ and Volunteer with The Commission and delivers talks many and various societies and is delighted to spread the story of this extraordinary organisation.

SUMMARY:Everyday Life and Accidental Death in Tudor Oxfordshire
DESCRIPTION:Tudor England was a dangerous place.  There were plagues and wars\, perilous childbirths and shocking infant mortality.  But what risks did people face as they went about their everyday lives?  Steven Gunn of Merton College and Tomasz Gromelski of Wolfson College are investigating this problem using evidence from coroner’s reports preserved in the National Archives.  The four-year project entitled “Everyday Life and Fatal Hazard in Sixteenth-century England” is based in Oxford and funded by the Economic and Social Research Council\, with support from the Faculty of History and Merton and Wolfson Colleges.  Steven is Acting Warden\, Tutor in History and Professor of Early Modern History Research.
