SUMMARY:History on a Plate - Heritage Weekend event
DESCRIPTION:Blue Plates\, similar to the Blue Plaque scheme\, will be displayed around the Town to commemorate establishments that sold food and drink and those who ran them. Some of these places no longer exist\, so look for the plates in unexpected places. \n\nOver the years\, buildings in Abingdon have changed their use as society and its needs have changed. Our Blue Plates are just a snapshot of some of the places that have now vanished\, such as cafés and restaurants\, or where the premises now do something different. Some were family-run shops like bakeries\, or beer retailers. The plates recall the names of some of the people who ran them\, too. In conjunction with the launch of the World War One website\, if any of these places had a connection with one of the featured soldiers or families on this site\, there will be a QR code to link you directly to the webpage so you can find out more. \nPick up a trail leaflet and family quiz sheet from our Market Place Information stall on Saturday or Sunday or download it from the Abingdon Heritage website https://www.abingdonheritage.org.uk/ from the evening of Friday 17 September.

SUMMARY:Heritage Weekend 2021
DESCRIPTION:Abingdon loves to celebrate its rich and very visible heritage. Every year in September we join in with the national Heritage Open Days programme which runs across the country (and abroad) and offers a diverse and entertaining range of ways to learn more about our past. \nThe national theme chosen for this year’s event is Edible England so we will be highlighting food and drink and how it was grown\, delivered\, prepared and consumed at various times in Abingdon’s history. \nEvents will be held in the Market Place\, Guildhall\, Abbey Buildings\, St Nicolas’ Church\, the Museum and St Ethelwolds House and other places around town. \nThe main events will be on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 September\, but there will be special events in the Museum from Saturday 11th and an exhibition in St Nicolas Church from Thursday 16th. For the full programme see https://www.abingdonheritage.org.uk/

SUMMARY:Abingdon’s Food and Drink History - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:As part of Abingdon Heritage Open Days 2021\, whose theme is “Edible Abingdon-on-Thames”\, we have put together a photographic display to remind us of how we used to produce\, buy and consume food and drink in the days before supermarkets\, take-aways and the internet! \n\nLike other market towns\, Abingdon has a long and varied history relating to food. We had a vineyard\, numerous mills\, and fishing. Brewing was a major feature – including in the former Abbey Buildings. And it is surprising how much of what we currently consider part of the town was farms and orchards only a hundred or so years ago. \nMore recently still\, the pattern of shops in the town centre was very different – numerous butchers\, greengrocers and bakers to choose from. \nThen of course we have our unique tradition of bun-throwing. \nCall in and see a fascinating range of pictures to illustrate all of this – and more.\nThe exhibition will be set in the wonderful surroundings of St Nicolas Church – and if you want to know more about the church’s history\, join the Lost Abbey Walk on Sunday! \nThere is information about other Heritage Weekend events on our Heritage Festival website or at our information stall on the Market Place on the Saturday and Sunday.
