SUMMARY:Exhibition: Atomics to Medieval Knights
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to the positive visitors’ feedback and high attendance\, we are happy to let you know that the exhibition “Atomics to Medieval Knights – a history of Fitzharris Manor Estate” has been extended until Sunday 6th April.  \nThis tells the story of Fitzharris Manor\, from its beginning after the Norman Conquest\, when it was granted to a knight called Owen or Oin. One of his descendants was called Fitzharry\, whose name attached itself to the Manor and is still reflected in the modern housing estate. We track the history of the Manor through time\, and how the Manor House changed with a succession of owners. The exhibition then focusses on the coming of the AERE research establishment at Harwell\, which brought an influx of new people to the town – the “Atomics”. In order to provide housing for them\, a new estate was built on the site of Fitzharris Manor – the Fitzharris Estate. The exhibition looks at the construction\, the design\, and the people’s life on the estate and how the coming of the Atomics changed the town. It also lifts the lid on what went on at Harwell\, and some events which shaped world history but took place right on our doorstep. Much of the research into the history of the estate has been done by Mike Evans of the Fitzharris Estate Residents Association\, whose support makes the exhibition possible.

SUMMARY:1944 - Breaking in to Fortress Europe. WWII Talk Series by Gareth Howell
DESCRIPTION:BBC Nottingham’s history advisor and renowned history speaker Gareth Howell returns to continue the story of World War II. \n‘The Germans have been kicked out of Africa after huge losses in the Tunisia campaign\, and Italy is looking for a way out of the war. On the Eastern Front the Germans have suffered a heavy defeat at Stalingrad but are preparing for one last gamble at Kursk in an effort to turn the tide\, while the skies are the scene of furious battles as the British and Americans look too bomb Germany in to submission. The U-Boat menace has already been defeated. But have the Allies got what it takes to break into fortress Europe?’ \nThis is the story of these times\, continuing the series of talks began in Abingdon in 2014. We look at the fighting in Sicily\, Kursk\, Italy\, Ukraine\, and the skies of Europe\, before examining the D-Day landings. Europe will never be the same again. \nBooking Essential\nTickets: Adults £10 / Children £8 \nThe Location has been changed and will be now held at the Roysse Court\, Bridge Street\, Abingdon.\nThis room is on the ground floor and is wheelchair accessible. \nTo book your seats please click here or visit www.ticketsource.co.uk/abingdon-museum \nAlternatively you can purchase your ticket at the Museum reception (firtst floor)\, by cash or card.

SUMMARY:‘Historic Building Mythbusting’ - A talk by Dr.James Wright of Triskele Heritage
DESCRIPTION:From June 2024 onwards\, James Wright of Triskele Heritage will be setting off on a promotional book tour after the release of Historic Building Mythbusting – Uncovering Folklore\, History and Archaeology. He will be at Abingdon Museum on Thursday 12th September for a presentation lasting 45-60 minutes\, Q&A session\, and people will have the opportunity to pick up a signed copy of the book. \nHe will give two talks at 12pm and 2pm in Abingdon Museum’s Kempster room (museum basement) on Thursday 12 September 2024. This floor is also accessible via lift. \n£10 per ticket. Booking essential as tickets limited to 20 for each talk.  \nPlease click here to book your ticket or visit https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/abingdon-museum \n  \nJames Wright is a regular on Channel 4’s The Great British Dig and on BBC Radio 4’s The Hidden History Of…; plus\, he has made appearances on documentaries such as Time Team (Channel 4)\, Mystic Britain (Smithsonian Channel)\, and Unearthed (Discovery Science). \nGo to any ancient building and there will be interesting\, exciting\, and romantic stories presented to the visitor. They are commonly believed and widely repeated – but are they really true? These stories include those of secret passages linking ancient buildings\, spiral staircases in castles giving advantage to right-handed defenders\, ship timbers used in the construction of buildings on land\, blocked doors in churches which are thought to keep the Devil out and claims to be the oldest pub in the city. \nJames Wright will explain the development of such myths and investigate the underlying truths behind them. Sometimes the realities hiding behind the stories are even more interesting\, romantic\, and exciting than the myth itself… \nThe speaker\, James Wright (Triskele Heritage)\, is an award winning buildings archaeologist. He has two decades professional experience of ferreting around in people’s cellars\, hunting through their attics and digging up their gardens. He hopes to find meaningful truths about how ordinary and extraordinary folk lived their lives in the mediaeval period. He is the author of the popular Mediaeval Mythbusting Blog

SUMMARY:Exhibition: “Celebrating Abingdon Women in the Arts and Sciences”
DESCRIPTION:In our first exhibition for 2024 Abingdon Museum will be “Celebrating Abingdon Women in the Arts and Sciences”. It will highlight the lives of remarkable women\, some who lived in Abingdon and made major contributions to the cultural life of the town\, some who came from Abingdon and went out into the world to accomplish great things. In the visual arts they are Pat Russell and Janet Boulton\, who set up their own paper-making studio\, and Charlotte Hardcastle\, whose delicate and highly accurate botanical drawings are preserved in a New Zealand museum. Representing the written word they are Dorothy Richardson\, who wrote some of the first modernist novels\, and historian Agnes Baker\, who bridged literature and history by bringing local history to life through plays and pageants. Also from the field of history are Gabrielle Lambrick\, who researched the history of Abingdon Abbey in particular\, and was an important member of two societies dedicated to local history; Mieneke Cox\, who told the story of Abingdon through the museum displays and a series of books; and Marion Wenzel who was the curator of the Abbey Buildings and researched one of Abingdon’s most intriguing archaeological finds\, the Islamic Glass. Representing science is Mary Buckland\, née Morland\, who made important contributions to palaeontology\, particularly with her detailed drawings of fossils\, including those of Megalosaurus\, the first scientifically described dinosaur. \nIn telling the stories of these women we want to highlight the contributions women have made in all fields of endeavour\, but also emphasise their connection with Abingdon – something our town can be proud of. \n  \nLocation: Sessions Gallery (First Floor) \nFree Admission
