SUMMARY:Professor Sue Black - The Real World of Forensic Anthropology
DESCRIPTION:Sue Black is the UK’s leading forensic anthropologist. Her work has ranged from war crimes investigations in Kosovo to single suspicious deaths in the UK and everything in between\, some of which have been the subject of a series of TV programmes.  She will talk about how her upbringing and an academic career in human anatomy paved the way for a career in this field and how her current research is helping to identify perpetrators of child sexual abuse globally.  She says ‘it may seem like a dark topic when you work with death every day of your life\, but it is surprising just how much humour can be found’.

SUMMARY:Trevor Rowley - A Stitch in Time: The Miraculous Story of the Bayeux Tapestry
DESCRIPTION:The Bayeux Tapestry is an 11th century embroidery which tells the story of the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings and graphically illustrates the battle itself.  Most popular perceptions of the Norman Conquest of England are based on illustrations taken from the Tapestry.  In this talk Trevor will describe this extraordinary artefact\, how\, where\, when and why it was made.  He will also discuss its later history and the role it played during the Napoleonic Wars and World War II.  Trevor is an English landscape historian and archaeologist known for his work on the Welsh Marches\, Oxfordshire and the medieval landscape and published a book “The Landscape of the Bayeaux Tapestry” in 2023.  Amongst other distinguished posts\, he is a trustee and co-director of the Appleton Area Archaeological Research Project\, which is investigating the history and archaeology of his home village of Appleton.

SUMMARY:Work With Joy - Rawnsley\, Ruskin and the Keswick School of Industrial Arts: Scenes from an extraordinary Life
DESCRIPTION:An illustrated talk by Dr. Rosalind Rawnsley (co-author of a new biography of Canon Rawnsley).  Canon Hardwicke Drummond Rawnsley was a co-founder of the National Trust and the talk will look at various aspects of his extraordinary life\, including the influence of John Ruskin\, which bore fruit in the work of the School which Rawnsley and his wife founded in 1884.  It was originally founded to provide skills training to under-employed farm labourers\, in the spirit of John Ruskin’s philosophy and the Arts and Crafts movement.  This enterprise\, while respecting its original principles\, evolved into a flourishing business which survived for a hundred years.  Rosalind is both the great granddaughter of Canon Rawnsley and also the co-author of his newly published biography and will show us how the School\, while respecting its original principles\, evolved into a flourishing business which survived for a hundred years.

SUMMARY:The Camel that fled the Nazis - The Story of a Tang Dynasty Camel in the Ashmolean Museum
DESCRIPTION:On the first floor of the Ashmolean Museum in the Asian Crossroads gallery the visitor is greeted by a large\, Chinese\, pottery camel on a plinth.  The Tang Dynasty camel serves as a symbol of the Silk Roads linking East to West\, but there is much more to it than initially meets the eye.  Little does the label show that this is a camel with history\, a camel that fled the Nazis\, a camel that survived persecution\, war\, and exile.  This talk will trace the origins of the camel and its astonishing 20th century journey from Nazi Germany to wartime Britain in the luggage of enigmatic refugee scholar Prof. Paul Jacobsthal.  Nazi perversion of archaeology\, secret escapes\, subterfuge and propaganda are just some of the themes that will feature as the extraordinary story of Jacobsthal and his camel is being uncovered.  Dr Katharina Ulmschneider is a Senior Research Fellow at Worcester College Oxford\, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and an Associate Member of the Society of Archivists.  She has published widely on archaeological refugee scholars\, medieval archaeology and economy and on the impact of metal-detecting in archaeology.  Her co-edited books\, Markets in Early Medieval Europe won the British Archaeology Book award in 2004 and Celtic Art in Europe was shortlisted Current Archaeology Book of the Year 2016.  In 2013 she became Co-Director of the Historic Environment Image Resource at the School of Archaeology\, Oxford and is currently finishing a book on refugee archaeologist Prof. Paul Jacobsthal.

SUMMARY:Elin Bornemann – Grinling Gibbons: His life\, work and the Abingdon Mirror
DESCRIPTION:Abingdon County Hall Museum is proud to have an exquisitely carved frame probably by Grinling Gibbons\, now containing a mirror\, on permanent display. Gibbons was the premier woodcarver of his age\, and his artistic achievements and craftsmanship are still held in high esteem today. His work adorns many of the great houses of this country but is also found in some lesser known places. The talk will take the frame as the starting point for an exploration of Gibbons’ life and work in its historic context\, the significance of his time in Holland and the influences on his style\, before returning to the Abingdon frame for a more detailed examination. After taking a degree in History and an MA in Museum Studies\, Elin worked in the management of collections at Tyne and Wear Museums\, the Pitt Rivers Museum and the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments. She has been Collections Officer at Abingdon County Hall Museum since 2015.

SUMMARY:Prof. Jonathon Healey - England Under the Stuarts: The People's Century
DESCRIPTION:It was in the Tudor and early Stuart periods that ordinary people really got involved in politics.  It was a world of political gossip\, rumour\, news and satire.  It gave us the first newspapers and the rise of the political petition.  It was an age of rebellion and riot when the power of the great and the good could rarely be taken for granted. This talk looks at how the English people became political\, looking at everything from gossip and satire at the Royal Exchange to scandalous alehouse talk and even the political threat posed by angry words in courts of law. Jonathon Healey is Associate Professor of Social History at the University of Oxford and is writing a book on the social history of seventeenth century England.  In the meantime he is also working on the history of insults and disgust in sixteenth and seventeen century England.  He is keen to foster a public engagement with social history more generally.  In 2012 he was picked as one of the winners of BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Thinkers competition.
