SUMMARY:NT Live: The Motive and the Cue (Delayed Live)
DESCRIPTION:Sam Mendes (The Lehman Trilogy) directs Mark Gatiss as John Gielgud and Johnny Flynn as Richard Burton in this fierce and funny new play. \n1964: Richard Burton\, newly married to Elizabeth Taylor\, is to play the title role in an experimental new Broadway production of Hamlet under John Gielgud’s exacting direction. But as rehearsals progress\, two ages of theatre collide and the collaboration between actor and director soon threatens to unravel. \nWritten by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and designed by Es Devlin (The Crucible)\, the Evening Standard award-winning best new play was filmed live during a sold-out run at the National Theatre.

SUMMARY:ROH Live: MacMillan Celebrated (Encore)
DESCRIPTION:Danses Concertantes\, commissioned by Ninette de Valois in 1955\, was MacMillan’s first major work. An early sign of the incredible artistic output that would follow\, the work’s critical success spurred MacMillan to abandon performing in favour of choreography. It is followed by Different Drummer\, MacMillan’s complex and haunting balletic interpretation of Woyzeck\, Georg Büchner’s play about a soldier’s descent into madness. The mixed programme concludes with Requiem\, his 1976 work for Stuttgart Ballet\, created in memory of its late artistic director\, MacMillan’s friend and former Royal Ballet dancer and choreographer John Cranko.

SUMMARY:ROH Live: Madama Butterfly
DESCRIPTION:When the young geisha\, Cio–Cio–San\, marries American Naval Officer Pinkerton\, she believes she is entering a real\, binding marriage for life. Forsaking her religion and community\, she learns all too late that for Pinkerton\, their marriage is merely an illusion – with tragic consequences. \nWith a score that includes Butterfly’s aria\, ‘Un bel dì\, vedremo’ (‘One fine day’) and the Humming Chorus\, Giacomo Puccini’s opera is entrancing and ultimately heart–breaking. Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s exquisite production takes inspiration from 19th–century European images of Japan. Asmik Grigorian performs the role of Cio–Cio–San\, with Kevin John Edusei conducting.

SUMMARY:ROH Live: Manon
DESCRIPTION:This adaptation of Abbé Prévost’s novel embodies Kenneth MacMillan at his best\, his acute insight into human psychology and his mastery of narrative choreography finding full expression in the impassioned duets of the central couple\, visceral and urgent in their desire. The heroine’s struggle to escape poverty make Manon one of the most dramatic and devastating of ballets\, emphasized by Nicholas Georgiadis’ evocative designs that reflect the juxtaposition between Manon’s impoverished origins and the lavish world she longs to inhabit. The 2023/24 Season celebrates the centenary of Nicholas Georgiadis.

SUMMARY:National Theatre Live: Fleabag
DESCRIPTION:★★★★★ ‘Witty\, filthy and supreme.’ Guardian \nWritten and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag\, Killing Eve) and directed by Vicky Jones\, Fleabag is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life. Following a box-office record-breaking run in cinemas in 2019\, the one-woman show returns to cinemas to the big screen this summer. \nFleabag may seem oversexed\, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed\, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café struggling to keep afloat\, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose. \nThe hilarious\, award-winning play that inspired the BBC’s hit TV series Fleabag\, was filmed live on stage in London’s West End in 2019. \nPresented by DryWrite\, Soho Theatre and Annapurna Theatre.

SUMMARY:ROH Live: The Sleeping Beauty
DESCRIPTION:The Sleeping Beauty holds a very special place in The Royal Ballet’s heart and history. It was the first performance given by the Company when the Royal Opera House reopened at Covent Garden in 1946 after World War II. In 2006\, this original staging was revived and has been delighting audiences ever since. Frederick Ashton famously cited the pure classicism of Marius Petipa’s 19th-century ballet as a private lesson in the atmospheric art and craft of choreography. Be swept away by Tchaikovsky’s ravishing music and Oliver Messel’s sumptuous fairytale designs with this true gem from the classical ballet repertory.

SUMMARY:Elégie; Rachmaninoff – A Heart in Exile
DESCRIPTION:Elegie chronicles the life of composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff. Though he became an exile in 1917\, Russia remained deeply rooted in his soul. His cultural identity and his longing for his homeland imbue his music\, not least the many much-loved works he wrote for his own instrument\, the piano. The narrative\, scripted from letters and diaries\, follows Rachmaninoff from his youth in Russia\, through his subsequent self-imposed exile in 1917 and finally to California USA\, where he died in 1943. \nThe concert includes many of his best-loved works for solo piano\, including a selection of Preludes\, Etudes-Tableaux and Moments Musicaux\, some of his own transcriptions and the haunting Elégie\, as well as works by Scriabin and Tchaikovsky. \nKnown internationally for her ‘Composer Portraits’ in words and music\, pianist Lucy Parham is presenting Elegie in 2023 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Rachmaninoff\, and is joined by internationally renowned stage and screen actor\, Sir Simon Russell Beale\, for this special performance.
