SUMMARY:ROH Live: The Sleeping Beauty
DESCRIPTION:The Sleeping Beauty holds a very special place in The Royal Ballet’s heart and history. It was the first performance given by the Company when the Royal Opera House reopened at Covent Garden in 1946 after World War II. In 2006\, this original staging was revived and has been delighting audiences ever since. Frederick Ashton famously cited the pure classicism of Marius Petipa’s 19th-century ballet as a private lesson in the atmospheric art and craft of choreography. Be swept away by Tchaikovsky’s ravishing music and Oliver Messel’s sumptuous fairytale designs with this true gem from the classical ballet repertory.

SUMMARY:Elégie; Rachmaninoff – A Heart in Exile
DESCRIPTION:Elegie chronicles the life of composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff. Though he became an exile in 1917\, Russia remained deeply rooted in his soul. His cultural identity and his longing for his homeland imbue his music\, not least the many much-loved works he wrote for his own instrument\, the piano. The narrative\, scripted from letters and diaries\, follows Rachmaninoff from his youth in Russia\, through his subsequent self-imposed exile in 1917 and finally to California USA\, where he died in 1943. \nThe concert includes many of his best-loved works for solo piano\, including a selection of Preludes\, Etudes-Tableaux and Moments Musicaux\, some of his own transcriptions and the haunting Elégie\, as well as works by Scriabin and Tchaikovsky. \nKnown internationally for her ‘Composer Portraits’ in words and music\, pianist Lucy Parham is presenting Elegie in 2023 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Rachmaninoff\, and is joined by internationally renowned stage and screen actor\, Sir Simon Russell Beale\, for this special performance.

SUMMARY:ROH Live: Like Water for Chocolate
DESCRIPTION:A modern Mexican classic of magic realism provides the basis for The Royal Ballet’s new full-length work\, reuniting Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon with the creative team who transformed Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Winter’s Tale into dance\, composer Joby Talbot and designer Bob Crowley. \nThe ballet is inspired by Laura Esquivel’s novel – a captivating family saga where the central character’s emotions spill out through cooking to influence everyone around her in startling and dramatic ways. In this co-production with American Ballet Theatre\, Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra also acts as musical consultant for Talbot’s newly commissioned score\, and Wheeldon has worked closely with Esquivel to reshape her richly layered story into an entertaining and engrossing new ballet.

SUMMARY:My Mountain Life by ‘Touching the Void’s’ Simon Yates
DESCRIPTION:On the remote Siula Grande in Peru in June 1985\, mountaineer Simon Yates found himself in a desperately unenviable position. He was slowly being pulled off the mountain face by his injured partner\, Joe Simpson\, dangling on the rope 50 metres below. His decision to cut the rope saved both their lives in the epic of survival that followed and with the publication of the book ‘Touching The Void’\, later film and stage play\, both climbers became household names. It was an experience that could have put many off the sport of mountaineering – but not Simon. Over 35 years later\, he is still a very active exploratory climber and guide\, making several expeditions to the mountains each year. From the Arctic to the Antarctic\, Alaska to Central Asia there is hardly a significant range that he has not visited. \nCome along and witness Simon’s tireless journey from that mountain in Peru to some of the remotest on the planet and share with him the drama\, excitement and beauty of modern\, lightweight alpinism. Told with wit\, dry humour and lavishly illustrated with images and film collected on his great climbs. \n“Simon is a totally engaging speaker\, who both entertains and inspires.”

SUMMARY:RSC Richard III
DESCRIPTION:Young Richard of Gloucester uses the chaos of the Wars of the Roses to begin his unscrupulous climb to power in this classic Shakespearean history of a king in the throes of jealousy and murder. Despite being manifestly unfit to govern\, he overcomes each obstacle in his way to seize the crown\, as King Richard III. But as those around him turn against him\, and as his plans begin to unravel\, where else can he turn as the Lancastrian opposition returns to drag the country into battle once more and put an end to Richard’s tyrannical rule. Richard III is a savagely comic analysis of the exercise of power\, reminding us of the dangers of tyranny and our duty not to let it go unchecked.

SUMMARY:ROH Live: Mayerling
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by dark and gripping real life events\, this Royal Ballet classic depicts the sexual and morbid obsessions of Crown Prince Rudolf leading to the murder-suicide scandal with his mistress Mary Vetsera. The oppressive glamour of the Austro-Hungarian court in the 1880s sets the scene for a suspenseful drama of psychological and political intrigue as Rudolf fixates on his mortality. \nKenneth MacMillan’s 1978 ballet remains a masterpiece of storytelling and this revival marks 30 years since the choreographer’s death. Expect to see The Royal Ballet at its dramatic finest across potent ensemble scenes and some of the most daring and emotionally demanding pas de deux in the ballet repertory.
