SUMMARY:The ATOM Society: Space Sweepers Get Set to Clean the Orbital Highway
DESCRIPTION:One of the first companies in the world to focus on space sustainability\, Astroscale has been working for over a decade on developing technologies to remove space debris and enable a circular economy in space. This talk will present how they go about removing debris from Earth’s orbits and creating a safer and more sustainable space environment\, along with the latest technology and mission developments that Astroscale has been flying and working on.

SUMMARY:ATOM Society talk - Motor Neuron Disease (MND)
DESCRIPTION:Several high-profile cases of MND among sports stars have brought much increased attention to this progressive degenerative disorder. The ATOM Society will host a talk by a leading local expert\, Professor Kevin Talbot at 19:30 on Tuesday (new weekday this year!) 16th October 2023 in Abingdon United Football Club\, Northcourt Rd\, OX14 1PL\, Abingdon. \nMotor neuron disease\, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)\, is a relentlessly progressive and uniformly fatal neurodegenerative disease\, which leads to paralysis of voluntary movement. Kevin’s talk will explore the nature of neurodegeneration\, using the example of ALS\, and explain how recent research provides a roadmap to improving the prospects for treatment and to ultimately make ALS preventable. \nProfessor Talbot qualified in medicine in London and has focussed on neurology. He is currently Head of Department at the University of Oxford Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences. \nFor more information\, please see atomsociety.org.uk.

SUMMARY:ATOM Society talk: Lions\, from corncobs to geopolitics
DESCRIPTION:ATOM Society brings you a highly topical talk by Prof. David Macdonald at 19:30 on Tuesday (new weekday this year!) 19th September 2023 in Abingdon United Football Club\, Northcourt Rd\, OX14 1PL\, Abingdon. \nDavid\, working in and around Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe\, with his long-term colleague\, Andrew Loveridge\, has researched landscape planning (the identification of refuges for lion and corridors linking them)\, ways of resolving conflict between farmers and lions\, and the thorny issue of lion trophy hunting. The last of these leapt to international prominence with the killing\, by a Minnesotan crossbow hunter\, of the project’s study-lion nicknamed Cecil. \nProf Macdonald founded the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) in 1986 and is a Wildlife Conservation Fellow at Lady Margaret Hall\, Oxford University. The WildCRU mission is to achieve practical solutions to conservation problems through original scientific research.

SUMMARY:ATOM Society talk on Quantum Technologies: Principles and Applications
DESCRIPTION:This month’s future-oriented talk will be given by Dr Rhys Lewis of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). \nAs many of you may have seen from our website https://www.atomsociety.org.uk\, we are bringing you a key talk entitled \n“Quantum Technologies: Principles and Applications” on Tuesday (new weekday!) 15th August 2023\nRhys will describe the range of new technologies being developed based on the physics of quantum mechanics involving interactions at the fundamental level of single photons\, atoms\, ions and superconductivity. These developments are part of a large government investment in quantum technologies with the objective of growing new companies and enhancing national security. \nDr Lewis is the Head of the Quantum Metrology Institute at the NPL\, a government-owned laboratory applying science in support of UK industry.

SUMMARY:ATOM Society talk; The End of Housework?
DESCRIPTION:Domestic work is critical to health and well-being. Societies cannot function without regular meals cooked\, clothes and homes cleaned\, and people cared for. \nIt is also very time consuming and generally shared unequally within and between households. \nWomen continue to do more unpaid domestic work than men in the majority of households\, though the extent of gender inequality when it comes to domestic work varies between societies. \nDr. Ekaterina Hertog will explore the potential for a further transformation of unpaid domestic work with the rise of AI-powered technologies\, expert predictions about the future of housework and care work\, individual attitudes to using smart digital technologies to replace their own domestic work\, and how this varies cross-culturally.

SUMMARY:ATOM Society Talk: Fusion\, Powering the Future
DESCRIPTION:ATOM Society brings you a highly topical talk about energy from nuclear fusion by Chris Warrick at 19:30 on Tuesday (new weekday this year!) 20th June 2023 in Abingdon United Football Club\, Northcourt Rd\, OX14 1PL\, Abingdon. \nFusing hydrogen atoms together has the potential to provide a near-limitless\, safe\, and clean source of carbon-free energy. This has been a scientific “Holy Grail” since the 1950s but still has a long way to go.  Recent results from US and UK scientists have been encouraging; researchers confirmed they have overcome a major barrier – producing more energy from a fusion experiment than was put in. \nChris is a physics-trained technical consultant\, passionate about driving the transition to clean energy. Earlier in his career\, he worked at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy. \nFor more information\, please see atomsociety.org.uk.

SUMMARY:ATOM Society Talk; Legitimate Idleness
DESCRIPTION:Legitimate Idleness: Victorian Travel for Health \nThe ATOM Society brings you a fascinating talk by Prof. Sally Shuttleworth at 19:30 on Tuesday (new weekday this year!) 16th May 2023 in Abingdon United Football Club\, Northcourt Rd\, OX14 1PL\, Abingdon. \nMiddle-class Victorians had always travelled in Europe\, but from the 1860s there was a huge rise in the numbers travelling in winter explicitly for their health. This talk focuses on the ‘invention’ of Mentone\, on the Riviera\, and Davos\, in the Swiss Alps\, as winter health resorts. Professor Shuttleworth will explore the medical and cultural dimensions of these developments\, as well as the lives of some of the more famous invalids who wintered there. \nSally Shuttleworth is Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford\, where she was previously Head of the Humanities Division. She works on the inter-relations of medicine\, science and culture. \nFor more information\, please see atomsociety.org.uk.
