SUMMARY:Heritage Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Weekend is a highlight of late summer in Abingdon. The Friends of Abingdon co-ordinate a weekend of open properties\, exhibitions and activities to showcase the town’s rich history. We link up with the national Heritage Open Days who suggest a theme each year. This year it is “Transport\, Routes and Connections.” \nAbingdon was connected by a network of paths\, roads and waterways which sustained trade\, travel and daily life for thousands of years: \n\nLook at old maps\, pictures and stories in two exhibitions\, one in the historic Guildhall and one at the Long Alley Almshouses.\nLearn about the Lost Railway of Abingdon at Unit 24 and see an 18 foot working model (00 gauge) of Abingdon station\, yard and tracks\nFamilies with young children will enjoy the Brio trainset available to play with in the Roysse Room (and also available to win by completing our town trail).\nOlder children will enjoy the Iron Age Experience at the Abbey Buildings (Saturday only) with crafts and interactive demonstrations.\nAnd “kids” of all ages will want to test themselves against the Fun Facts quizmaster!\nConnections aren’t just physical and the displays include information about the Abingdon telephone exchange (now gone) and the DAWN talking newspapers service (still thriving).\nAbingdon Artists will be holding their “Landscape in a Day” open competition on Saturday – watch them at work and see the results in a display in St Nic’s Church.\nOn Sunday there will be a celebration of MG cars\, Abingdon’s most famous export\, with over 20 vehicles in the Market Place.\n\nHistoric properties around the town will be open to view including Abingdon Guildhall\, St Helen’s and St Nicolas’ Churches\, the Baptist Church and 35 Ock Street\, St Ethelwold’s House\, Kimber House (MG Museum)\, the medieval Merchant’s House\, the Georgian solicitor’s offices on Ock Street\, the Abbey Buildings and the Old Ticket Office at Culham. \nYou can find more details including opening times and locations at www.abingonheritage.org.uk  or come to our Information Stall on the Market Place to start your journey around the town. SUMMARY:Heritage Open Days
DESCRIPTION:A swashbuckling Hollywood icon\, one of the founders of the Arts and Crafts Movement and the great English painter Turner have one thing in common: they all loved Abingdon-on-Thames. \nDouglas Fairbanks Junior dined frequently at The Crown and Thistle\, John Ruskin lived there some years earlier\, and the teenage JMW Turner sketched and painted views of Abingdon and the surrounding countryside.  These stories and how Sir Paul McCartney’s BAFTA award winning “Frogs Chorus” video came to be made in Thames Street will be explored during this year’s Heritage Open Days. \nThe Arts and Creativity theme of this year’s heritage festival will also showcase other gems such as the priceless medieval “Abingdon Missal” decorated by the monks of the Abbey of Abingdon\, which is now held in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. A major exhibition about the Missal will be held in the Abbey Buildings. \nThe town has been home to many famous artists\, actors\, writers\, sculptors and comedians\, all of whom have enriched our national life but whose stories are often untold.  The aim of this year’s Heritage Open Days is to unlock those stories and inspire our townsfolk and visitors with the creativity which Abingdon has encouraged. \nA full list of the events and exhibitions can be found on our website and will be published in leaflets available from early September.. The venues will include the medieval Abbey Buildings\, the Guildhall\, Christ’s Hospital Almshouses and several of the town’s other historic buildings and there will be a “Fab Ab” exhibition in the former H Samuels shop. Abingdon Artists will be helping people to explore painting\, Abingdon Flower Club will be displaying their work\, and Abingdon Drama Club will present a “Son et Lumiere” to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Unicorn Theatre. On the Sunday there will a programme of guided walks. \nInformation and self-guided walk leaflets will be available all weekend\, from our Market Place information stall.

SUMMARY:Beating the bounds
DESCRIPTION:The Charter granted to Abingdon in 1556 defined the boundaries of the Town and included the provision for the “Mayor\, Bailiffs and Burgesses…and their Successors to make perambulations (of the Boundaries)”  This tradition of Beating the Bounds has been a special occasion in the past\,  but had lapsed and was only revived a few years ago as the New Year Day Boundary Walk. \nThe Friends of Abingdon Civic Society have added the Boundary Walk to their programme of guided walks \nThis year the walk will be led by Cllr Helen Pighills\, who will be joined by Town Crier Patrick Bird. \nThe event will start from the Market Place at 11am\, and will take no longer than 2 hours.

SUMMARY:"How 70 Years of Science Changed Abingdon" - Heritage Open Days event
DESCRIPTION:A talk\, by eminent local scientist and author\, Frank Close\, about how in the last 70 years science has changed Abingdon and how Abingdon science has changed the world. It takes place in the unique setting of Abingdon’s medieval Abbey Buildings. \n\nIn 1952\, Harwell was just six years old. An influx of scientists was transforming Abingdon from a market town and home of the MG Midget to the international centre of science and technology that it is today. The talk reviews how our view of the universe has evolved during the second Elizabethan era and the key role that local science centres have played in this. \nFrank Close is Emeritus professor of Theoretical Physics at Oxford University\, former head of theoretical physics at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory\, and former Head of Communications and Public Education at CERN. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and won their Michael Faraday Prize for excellence in science communication in 2013. In addition to having published some 200 papers on nuclear and particle physics\, he is the author of 20 popular books on science including two linked to Abingdon nuclear spies – his highly acclaimed history and expose of atomic espionage\, “Trinity” about Klaus Fuchs and “Half Life” about former Abingdon resident\, Harwell scientist and probable spy\, Bruno Pontecorvo. His latest\, published in June\, titled “Elusive” is a biography of the Higgs Boson. \nNB the talk is free\, but space is limited so please book your place here.

SUMMARY:"In a Monastery Garden” - Abingdon Abbey Buildings
DESCRIPTION:Visit one of Abingdon’s lesser-known treasures\, the remaining domestic buildings of the medieval Abingdon Abbey. Explore the “pop-up” Monastery Herb Garden\, to see herbs used by the monks for both medicinal and culinary purposes. Talk to the beekeeper about his bees and honey\, a medieval wonder food. \n\nAbingdon Abbey was one of the most cultured and wealthy monasteries of England. It welcomed many royal visitors over 500 years to 1536\, when the Abbey Church and most of the rest of the abbey precinct was demolished by order of King Henry VIII. The domestic buildings were sold as commercial premises and over the next 400 years were successively a corn mill\, a brewery and eventually slum dwellings. They were saved from demolition in 1944 by The Friends of Abingdon and after the first 10 years of repair and restoration they opened to the public; they have been open ever since\, but the repair and restoration work continues. More information about the Buildings and their history can be found on our website. \nThe Buildings will be open to wander around at your leisure or with a guide. Refreshments will be available in the Long Gallery. The Monastery Herb Garden will be open in the Millstream Garden on both days. Representatives from a wine collective will be there to talk about English wine-making and offer tastings\, and on Sunday afternoon a beekeeper will be available in the North Garden\, with a glass beehive and to answer questions about honey and the life of bees.

SUMMARY:History on a Plate - Heritage Weekend event
DESCRIPTION:Blue Plates\, similar to the Blue Plaque scheme\, will be displayed around the Town to commemorate establishments that sold food and drink and those who ran them. Some of these places no longer exist\, so look for the plates in unexpected places. \n\nOver the years\, buildings in Abingdon have changed their use as society and its needs have changed. Our Blue Plates are just a snapshot of some of the places that have now vanished\, such as cafés and restaurants\, or where the premises now do something different. Some were family-run shops like bakeries\, or beer retailers. The plates recall the names of some of the people who ran them\, too. In conjunction with the launch of the World War One website\, if any of these places had a connection with one of the featured soldiers or families on this site\, there will be a QR code to link you directly to the webpage so you can find out more. \nPick up a trail leaflet and family quiz sheet from our Market Place Information stall on Saturday or Sunday or download it from the Abingdon Heritage website https://www.abingdonheritage.org.uk/ from the evening of Friday 17 September.

SUMMARY:Abingdon on Film - Heritage Weekend event
DESCRIPTION:As part of Abingdon’s Heritage Weekend 2021 a selection of heritage films made in or about Abingdon will be showing on a continuous loop in the Roysse Room of the Guildhall. The films will include: \n“A Tour of the Abingdon Almshouses in St Helen’s Churchyard”: a film by Alastair Fear and Jackie Smith\, bringing the rare and fascinating almshouses in St Helens Churchyard to life. \n“The Flying Shingle” – Ken Miles’ MG R2 Special”: a film by Callum John and Mike Gould\, centring around the struggle between maverick racing driver Ken Miles\, sports car maker Carroll Shelby and the executives of the Ford Motor Company to develop the world-beating GT40. Birmingham-born Ken Miles emigrated to California to run a garage specialising in MG. He achieved success in a car of his own creation using an MG engine and other components. Known as the ‘Flying Shingle’ thanks to its exceptionally low profile\, it survives to this day and still takes part in historic car races. \n“A Bitter End  : a film by the Abingdon Film Unit at Abingdon School\, following the story of brewing in Abingdon. \n“The End of the Line : a film by the Abingdon Film Unit at Abingdon School\,  showing the final years of the railway in Abingdon. \nAbingdon-on-Thames 2021: a contemporary account of the community here in Abingdon\, commissioned by the Town Council\, highlighting some of the work that goes on to make the town a good place for all to live. \nDrop in at any time – the last showing will start around 3.30 –  but do also take time to visit the displays in the other historic Guildhall rooms.

SUMMARY:Abingdon’s Food and Drink History - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:As part of Abingdon Heritage Open Days 2021\, whose theme is “Edible Abingdon-on-Thames”\, we have put together a photographic display to remind us of how we used to produce\, buy and consume food and drink in the days before supermarkets\, take-aways and the internet! \n\nLike other market towns\, Abingdon has a long and varied history relating to food. We had a vineyard\, numerous mills\, and fishing. Brewing was a major feature – including in the former Abbey Buildings. And it is surprising how much of what we currently consider part of the town was farms and orchards only a hundred or so years ago. \nMore recently still\, the pattern of shops in the town centre was very different – numerous butchers\, greengrocers and bakers to choose from. \nThen of course we have our unique tradition of bun-throwing. \nCall in and see a fascinating range of pictures to illustrate all of this – and more.\nThe exhibition will be set in the wonderful surroundings of St Nicolas Church – and if you want to know more about the church’s history\, join the Lost Abbey Walk on Sunday! \nThere is information about other Heritage Weekend events on our Heritage Festival website or at our information stall on the Market Place on the Saturday and Sunday.
