DESCRIPTION:Travelling troubadour Sorrel Nation brings a soulful mix of folk-rock to country and engages audiences with emotive lyrics\, 70s inspired style and a voice full of soul that can truly open the heart. \n2024 saw multiple new releases from Sorrel including a single featuring Steve Balsamo in May\, the delicate and beautiful live EP ‘Thirty Summers’ in July and the critically acclaimed debut studio album ‘Lost En Route’ in October. Sorrel performed at Black Deer\, Isle of Wight and Cambridge Folk Festivals amongst others and continues to tour the festival circuit over summer with The Magic Teapot music venue in her beloved campervan\, Dory. \nSorrel accomplished two successful UK wide tours in 2024\, including her first ever solo tour in April and first full band tour in October to accompany the release of ‘Lost En Route’\, an album Sorrel is immensely proud of. 2025 has proved to be no different as Sorrel embarked on three tours and exciting festival appearances to promote her debut album and its release on vinyl in March 2025. DESCRIPTION:We’re pleased to welcome back to The Unicorn Theatre Honey & the Bear who have been a tour de force on the UK Folk Festival circuit in recent years. The British folk and roots duo combine delicately interweaving vocal harmonies with emotive and evocative songwriting. With a diverse range of sounds and textures\,and rhythms that flow from the fast and furious to gentle ballads\, their live performances are spirited and dynamic. Conjuring stories in song\, they tell tales of Suffolk folklore\, courageous people they admire and their passion for nature which has been enchanting audiences up and down the country. \nThe multi-instrumentalist\, husband and wife team comprised of songwriters Jon Hart (guitar\, bass\, bouzouki) and Lucy Hart (guitar\, ukulele\, bass\, banjo\, mandolin & percussion)\, are often joined on-stage by band guests Evan Carson (percussion)\, Toby Shaer (Fiddle/Flutes/Whistles) and Archie Churchill-Moss (diatonic button accordion) who feature on all three Honey & The Bear studio albums. Together they have played at many revered venues and festivals across the UK as well as travelled across the channel. \nIn November 2023 they released their latest album ‘Away Beyond the Fret’\, their most personal album yet\, featuring stories and folklore of all things close to their heart including their home in Suffolk\, nature\, family\, history and community. The album has received much critical acclaim including 5 stars from the Morning Star. Shortlisted as FATEAs best band of 2023\, they are continuing to enjoy performing their repertoire live as part of their 10 Year Anniversary Tour this year.\n2020 and the onset of the coronavirus pandemic saw the duo grounded and all gigs cancelled\, but their music prevailed in the form of Sunday night facebook livestreams of which they performed thirty-two throughout the year 2020. After challenging themselves to write a new song for the first 12 weeks of the livestream\, they successfully managed to produce a second album. \n‘Journey Through the Roke’ was released on 23rd April 2021. The album features many talented musicians including Toby Shaer (whistles\, harmonium\, flute\, fiddle\, bass)\, Evan Carson (drums\, bodhran\, percussion)\, Archie Churchill Moss of Moore Moss Rutter (melodeon) and Graham Coe of The Jellyman’s Daughter (cello). ‘Journey Through the Roke’ has received airplay on the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show. \nTheir first full studio album ‘Made In The Aker’ (released July 2019) was followed by a UK tour as a four piece band in October 2019. The album was well received by both their ever growing fan base and the critics. Born and raised in Suffolk\, Lucy learned violin and drums at school\, sung in the Suffolk Jubilee choir and started songwriting at age 15. She taught herself guitar whilst at university in Canterbury\, and began performing her creations not long afterwards. At 27\, she released her debut band album ’Step Right On’\, songs from which you now hear her perform with Jon. Jon\, a Yorkshire boy\, raised in Cambridgeshire\, Norfolk and Suffolk\, has been performing his own songs since his teens. A self taught guitarist\, his love of driving guitar riffs is a core aspect of his song writing process. He has released three band albums\, the latest of which was entitled ‘Level with me’\, featuring ‘wristburner’ which is a gig favourite. \n“a celebration of nature\, history\, family and community. It’s largely through touring as a duo that they’ve been able to develop what has become an extraordinary partnership\, giving them the confidence to record their latest studio album\, Both in a Tune. His naturally laid back\, unostentatious style creates the perfect ambience for an intimate and inclusive live experience drawing listeners in with tales of the everyday and the unexpected. \nChris released his first album ‘From the Shadows’ in 2019. Then in September ’22 Chris released his second album ‘In Plain Sight’ to critical acclaim. His music over the years has been aired widely both internationally and on radio stations across the UK including BBC Radio and has seen press support from titles such as Folk Radio UK\, RnR magazine\, Irish Music Magazine and Americana UK\, while gaining a nomination for Best Male Artist of the Year from FATEA\, 2023. \nBorn and raised in Cambridgeshire\, Chris Fox cut his teeth playing for pints in local drinking establishments along the river Great Ouse in 2014. DESCRIPTION:Sound of the Sirens are a singer-songwriting duo based in Exeter\, Devon comprising of Abbe Martin & Hannah Wood. Honing their craft over the past decade\, Martin & Wood have cemented themselves as firm favourites as “one of the UK’s finest folk acts” not only on the Westcountry scene\, but nationally\, and internationally too. Their status\, and fast-growing fan-base is not only testament to the pair’s prowess as songwriters and musicians\, but as people too.\nMartin & Wood are two of the hardest working musicians on the scene and wear their hearts very much on their sleeves in terms of their songwriting. The pair glide gracefully through laments of past relationships\, and life experiences\, as well as highlighting the important topics of the day\, namely mental health awareness\, and homelessness. Without being pigeonholed into any stereo typical genre\, the instrumentation of the band is vast\, and varied. Martin (stage right) plays acoustic and high-strung (Nashville tuning) guitar\, mandolin\, and bass drum\, while partner in crime Wood (stage left) plays acoustic and electric guitar\, tambourine\, snare drum and the piano.\nThe pairs’ musical and vocal dexterity dovetail beautifully on the co-written songs\, which range from beautiful\, emotive ballads\, to up-beat\, foot stomping\, hands in the air\, sing-along anthems. The dynamic duo and their musical creations translate very well onto recorded media\, but it is in the live arena where the pair truly excel. There is a certain majesty about their live performances that simply cannot be put into words. It is this “je ne sais quoi” that keeps their loyal fans returning from far and wide to see these two perform. It is not just nearly two hours of high-quality live music you get for the entrance fee\, a Sound of the Sirens show is much more than that. Founded as a duo of Kate Griffin on banjo and vocals and Ford Collier (The Drystones) on low whistle and percussion\, the pair recruited some of the finest musicians exploring the meeting points of world\, folk\, and jazz on the Sheffield music scene: John Ball (Rafiki Jazz) on tabla and santoor\, Joss Mann-Hazell (Auka) on double bass\, and Alex Lyon on clarinets and vocals. DESCRIPTION:Honey & the Bear were a tour de force on the UK Folk Festival circuit in 2022. The British folk and roots duo combine delicately interweaving vocal harmonies with emotive and evocative songwriting. With a diverse range of sounds and textures\, and rhythms that flow from the fast and furious to gentle ballads\, their live performances are spirited and dynamic. Conjuring stories in song\, they tell tales of Suffolk folklore\, courageous people they admire and their passion for nature which has been enchanting audiences up and down the country.\nThe multi-instrumentalist pair\, comprised of songwriters Jon Hart (guitar\, bass\, bouzouki) and Lucy Hart (guitar\, ukulele\, bass\, banjo\, mandolin & percussion)\, are often joined on-stage by band guests Evan Carson (percussion) and Toby Shaer (Fiddle/Flutes/Whistles) who also feature on both Honey & The Bear studio albums. Together they have played at many revered venues and festivals across the UK as well as travelled across the channel for their first European tour. They supported Sam Kelly & The Lost Boys on two UK tours and opened for The Shires at world renowned Snape Malting’s Concert Hall. They returned to Snape Maltings under their own steam just two years later to perform a sold out show.\n2020 and the onset of the coronavirus pandemic saw the duo grounded and all gigs cancelled\, but their music prevailed in the form of Sunday night facebook livestreams of which they performed thirty-two throughout the year 2020. After challenging themselves to write a new song for the first 12 weeks of the livestream\, they successfully managed to produce a second album. ‘Journey Through the Roke’ was released on 23rd April 2021. The album features many talented musicians including Toby Shaer (whistles\, harmonium\, flute\, fiddle\, bass)\, Evan Carson (drums\, bodhran\, percussion)\, Archie Churchill Moss of Moore Moss Rutter (melodeon) and Graham Coe of The Jellyman’s Daughter (cello).  Journey through the Roke received airplay by Mark Radcliffe on the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show.\nTheir debut studio album ‘Made In The Aker’ (released July 2019) was followed by a UK tour as a four piece band in October 2019. The album was well received by both their ever growing fan base and the critics.\nBorn and raised in Suffolk\, Lucy learned violin and drums at school\, sung in the Suffolk Jubilee choir and started songwriting at age 15. She taught herself guitar whilst at university in Canterbury\, and began performing her creations not long afterwards. At 27\, she released her debut band album ’Step Right On’\, songs from which you now hear her perform with Jon.\nJon\, a Yorkshire boy\, raised in Cambridgeshire\, Norfolk and Suffolk\, has been performing his own songs since his teens. A self taught guitarist\, his love of driving guitar riffs is a core aspect of his song writing process. DESCRIPTION:A veteran of the scene\, Benji Kirkpatrick is well known as a rhythmic driver of such outfits as Bellowhead and Faustus\, with his “memorably aggressive” (MOJO) style.

Enlisting fellow ex-Bellowhead member\, Pete Flood on drums and Jackie Oates and Megan Henwood collaborator\, Pete Thomas on bass\, Benji formed a power trio\, going by the name of ‘The Excess’. The band recorded their debut album in 2019\, ‘Gold Has Worn Away’\, released on Westpark Records. They managed to get a few gigs in before the music industry was destroyed and are now brimming with hard hitting songs and muscular instrumentals ready for festival stages.

Before the Excess album Benji’s last offering of original material was on ‘Boomerang’ (Navigator 2008) – it received much critical acclaim but came at a time when other projects were taking off so they took precedence and the album didn’t receive the live airing it deserved. His most recent solo studio release features the songs of his first musical icon\, Jimi Hendrix – ‘Hendrix Songs’ was released in September 2015 on EDJ Records alongside a national tour entitled ‘Bendrix’. The show included the projection of original artwork animations created by Shropshire artist\, Esther Thorpe. The project’s aim was to rediscover the song-writing of the legendary guitarist.

Those ‘other’ projects included the cacophonous behemoth that was Bellowhead\, the band that managed to sell more copies of an independently released folk album than any other to date. The album in question being ‘Hedonism’ (Navigator 2010)\, recorded in Abbey Road Studios and produced by John Leckie. They took ‘folk’ ever nearer to the mainstream and became one of the biggest touring acts in the UK for their final few years. They made one album with a major label\, ‘Revival’ (Island 2014)\, their last offering to the world before splitting in 2016. The band made a huge impact on the UK folk and roots scene and enjoyed appearances on ‘Later… with Jools Holland’ as well as headline slots at many festivals.\nIn 2017\, folk-rock pioneers Steeleye Span head-hunted Benji for their new line up\, 40 years after his Dad\, John\, was in the band. Regular tours ensued with 2019 being a big year\, as the band celebrated their 50th Anniversary and released a new album\, ‘Est’d 1969’.  After an enjoyable stint Benji has now left the band.

Benji is working again with Seth Lakeman\, featuring on his new album ‘Make Your Mark’ and touring with his band in 2022. Benji featured on 2004 mercury Prize nominated release  ‘Kitty Jay’\, this led to much live work and Benji became a member of Seth’s band between 2009 and 2012\, contributing to his long players ‘Freedom Fields’ and ‘Hearts and Minds’; their long time collaboration continues.

Faustus\, of which one third is Benji\, were dubbed ‘bloke folk’ by one reviewer and continue to create innovative and energetic renditions of traditional songs\, the latest collection being on ‘Death and Other Animals’ (Westpark 2016) produced by Rupert Christie whom Bellowhead had worked with on Revival.

As part of the Shakespeare 400 celebrations in 2016\, Benji was invited to be involved in ‘The Fairy Portal Camp’\, put together by Leeds based theatre company\, Slung Low\, on commission from the Royal Shakespeare Company. A disparate group of musicians\, actors and dancers worked together to create new works every day for a week in the riverside setting of Avonbank Gardens in Stratford Upon Avon. 

Benji has also toured and recorded with Maddy Prior (the voice of Steeleye Span) and Oysterband\, as well as with Oysterband singer\, John Jones’ solo projects (The Reluctant Ramblers) and played alongside the likes of Thea Gilmore\, Joan as Police Woman\, Marc Almond and Green Gartside. \nSupport is from The Dicemen. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:15pm.

DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to bring Alex Hart (Seth Lakeman Trio\, Martin Barre Band) and her guitarist Adam Sweet to The Unicorn Theatre to kick off our 2024 programme. \nDescribed by BBC Radio 2 presenter Mark Radcliffe as “the Stevie Nicks of Folk”. The south-west based singer/songwriter Alex Hart is set for her most exciting and anticipated album release to date. \nAt 18 she collaborated with electronic duo Electronic Youth on a cover of Angie Stones’ “I Wish I Didn’t Miss You” which had huge global radio success reaching No.2 in the Music Week Dance Charts and was supported by Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1. \nThis recognition spearheaded a run of high-profile festivals performances and a slot opening for UK folk sensation Turin Brakes at the Lyme Regis Folk festival. Alex’s opening performances landed her two record deals\, as she was\nquickly snapped up by US label OK!Good Records and Right Track Records UK. Alex started working with Grammy Award winning songwriter and producer Terry Britten (famous for “What’s Love Got To Do With It for Tina Turner) and went on to release her critically acclaimed debut Album “On this Day” \nFollowing the success of Alex’s debut album\, her voice and musicianship caught the eye of legendary Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre\, who asked Alex to be a part of his band as a musician and vocalist for their European and international tour dates. Alex has performed and toured all over the UK/Europe with the band and has embarked on many international US tours. \nAlex also collaborates and performs alongside\, the critically acclaimed Devon born folk singer Seth Lakeman\, Alex’s voice as well her multi-instrumental playing features heavily on his brand-new album. The single “Higher We Aspire” received huge BBC Radio 2 support\, and Alex performed the song live on BBC Breakfast TV. \nAs well as a busy touring schedule\, Alex is constantly working on new music ready for new releases in 2023\, including her new album ‘VISIONS’ which has just been released this September alongside a successful UK tour. \n“This album has been a real labor of love for me. Each song tells a story about a certain time in my life\, some reflecting on relationships with friends\, family and my career. I wanted this album to resonate with others\, hopefully helping them through the difficult hurdles we face. This album is about feeling powerful and overcoming hard situations. One song\, however\, ‘Blackbird’ which features well-known folk artist Benji Kirkpatrick on Bouzouki\, is all about lockdown. Everytime I\nwalked around the park near my home I felt like the blackbird was following me. It was a constant reminder of my family and how much I missed seeing them. I’ve been very lucky to have some amazing guest appearances on my new record\, including Seth Lakeman and Martin Barre from Jethro Tull. They are great friends of mine\, I have toured the UK\, Europe and the USA with them and they have contributed highly to my journey in the music industry. The album artwork was created by Phil James\, an artist from Plymouth who is a dear friend of mine. He has captured the sentiment completely. Myself and Andy\, my husband got engaged near Yosemite in 2022\, so using the wanderlust photo was fitting for this project\, marking this poignant time in my life. \nWriting and recording with Josiah at Momentum Studios was also such a highlight\, it took a few months to gather the material together\, time spent alone first in my home studio and then bringing the ideas to Josiah\, where we would rework the songs together. We both played many of the tracks live and then overdubbed different instruments. I wanted to get the most organic sound as possible and I think we made a great team. Visions is definitely my best work so far. I am so proud of this album\, it is completely self-funded and it was so special to have complete control over every aspect.
