SUMMARY:Sound of the Sirens with support from Calum Gilligan
DESCRIPTION:Sound of the Sirens are a singer-songwriting duo based in Exeter\, Devon comprising of Abbe Martin & Hannah Wood. Honing their craft over the past decade\, Martin & Wood have cemented themselves as firm favourites as “one of the UK’s finest folk acts” not only on the Westcountry scene\, but nationally\, and internationally too. Their status\, and fast-growing fan-base is not only testament to the pair’s prowess as songwriters and musicians\, but as people too.\nMartin & Wood are two of the hardest working musicians on the scene and wear their hearts very much on their sleeves in terms of their songwriting. The pair glide gracefully through laments of past relationships\, and life experiences\, as well as highlighting the important topics of the day\, namely mental health awareness\, and homelessness. Without being pigeonholed into any stereo typical genre\, the instrumentation of the band is vast\, and varied. Martin (stage right) plays acoustic and high-strung (Nashville tuning) guitar\, mandolin\, and bass drum\, while partner in crime Wood (stage left) plays acoustic and electric guitar\, tambourine\, snare drum and the piano.\nThe pairs’ musical and vocal dexterity dovetail beautifully on the co-written songs\, which range from beautiful\, emotive ballads\, to up-beat\, foot stomping\, hands in the air\, sing-along anthems. The dynamic duo and their musical creations translate very well onto recorded media\, but it is in the live arena where the pair truly excel. There is a certain majesty about their live performances that simply cannot be put into words. It is this “je ne sais quoi” that keeps their loyal fans returning from far and wide to see these two perform. It is not just nearly two hours of high-quality live music you get for the entrance fee\, a Sound of the Sirens show is much more than that. The onstage chemistry\, camaraderie\, and banter is worth the ticket price alone. \nSupport is from Calum Gilligan. \nDoors and bar 7.00pm\, music 7.15pm

SUMMARY:Mishra with support from Elsi
DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, global-folk band Mishra met international fusion vocalist Deepa Shakthi (formerly Deepa Nair Rasiya). Out of a blossoming musical friendship\, they began a collaborative project that takes the soul-stirring euphoria of Deepa’s sufi singing as a starting point\, and weaves in the threads of Mishra’s UK folk and Indian classical influences to create a captivating cross-cultural sound. Their joyous performances are a journey of contrasts\, from hand-clapping trance-like sufi songs to spacious stillness and reflection. \nMishra are a collective of musicians with a growing reputation for forging a distinctive path through music rooted in diverse traditions. Founded as a duo of Kate Griffin on banjo and vocals and Ford Collier (The Drystones) on low whistle and percussion\, the pair recruited some of the finest musicians exploring the meeting points of world\, folk\, and jazz on the Sheffield music scene: John Ball (Rafiki Jazz) on tabla and santoor\, Joss Mann-Hazell (Auka) on double bass\, and Alex Lyon on clarinets and vocals. Since forming in 2018\, Mishra have won Celtic Connections’ prestigious ‘Danny Kyle’ award\, received BBC Radio 2 airplay for their albums ‘The Loft Tapes’ and ‘Reclaim’\, and performed at festivals including Cambridge Folk Festival\, Beardy\, Timber\, and more. \nOver 30 years of studying Indian music and working across genres under the banner of ‘world music’\, Deepa Shakthi has forged an international reputation as a vocalist and composer\, receiving awards and acclaim in the UK and India. She has worked with artists including Kuljit Bhamra and toured with Opera North’s production of Orpheus. \nSupport is from Elsi. \nDoors and bar 7.00pm\, music 7.15pm.

SUMMARY:The Rosellys with support from Rob Clamp
DESCRIPTION:Based in Herefordshire (UK)\, The Rosellys are a five piece band whose music can be best described as:\n“Capturing the essence of country\, with folk ingredients baked into a transatlantic roots fusion” (R2 Magazine). \nInfluenced by artists such as Chris Stapleton\, Alison Krauss\, Gillian Welch\, Gram Parsons & James Taylor to name a few\, it is clear The Rosellys have an absolute love for alternative country music. This family band is led by life partners Dr Rebecca Rosellys (guitar\, vocals\, banjo) and Simon Rosellys (guitar\, fiddle\, vocals)\, along with Simon’s Dad Allan Kelly (pedal steel/accordion) and father/son Matt Kirby (bass) and George Kirby (drums). They signed to Clubhouse Records in 2015. “The Rosellys displayed boundless energy\, especially on\nclosing song ‘You Ain’t Gotta Go Home’ with fast fiddle and a catchy melody sweeping the crowd along”. (Americana UK live review -2023) \nIn June 2022\, The Rosellys released their fifth studio album ‘On The Porch’. Rated 8/10\, Americana UK wrote; “expertly produced by Ron Rogers (T’Pau) this is a 14 track collection of stirring\, moving and classy fiddle and banjo-centric songs from a couple who\, 17 years into their relationship\, obviously really understand each other personally and musically – a highly impressive collection it is too”. Rating ‘On The Porch’ 4/5 stars\, R2 Magazine wrote; “Seventeen years of gigging means The Rosellys are a very slick unit indeed\, their alluring Americana and rootsy soundscapes further enhanced by former T’Pau Producer Ron Rogers sprinkling magic dust over the proceedings.” \nThe Rosellys have played several live sessions for BBC Radio 4’s ‘Loose Ends’ and their tracks are regularly featured on Hereford & Worcester’s BBC Introducing show – including a live recording at ‘How The Lights Get In’ Festival 2023. \n“The Rosellys blend English accents with lyrical references to both the UK and US alongside well pitched bass\, feisty drum beats and stunning pedal steel and fiddle to create a sound that walks the fine line between Celtic folk and Americana” (Nashville Over Here)\n“A brilliant band and a good example of that crossover where Britain meets America and it makes a very special sound indeed” (Ralph McLean – BBC Radio Ulster). \nSupport is from Rob Clamp. \nDoors and bar 7.00pm\, music at 7.15pm

SUMMARY:The Lost Notes with support from Jennifer Glatzhofer
DESCRIPTION:The Lost Notes are a 5-piece acoustic roots band based in the creatively fertile blaglands of Moseley\, Birmingham UK. They have built up a loyal fan base across the folk and festival circuit through their lively full band performances and more intimate trio gigs.\nThey write songs for chin-strokers\, foot-stompers\, head-nodders and those who like to partake in the dark art of inarticulate dancing and hollering. It happens. All delivered in glorious 3 part harmonies. \n“A highlight…were Moseley band The Lost Notes.  They…drew a huge crowd for their fast-paced set that was high on fun and audience engagement.”\nBirmingham Mail – Moseley Folk Festival Review\n“One of Birmingham’s finest emerging bands\, this Moseley-based quintet fuse bluegrass\, folk\, jazz\, blues and pop to produce a sound that is as compelling as it is entertaining.”
Birmingham Mail – Glee Club Review \nSupport is from Jennifer Glatzhofer. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:15pm.

SUMMARY:Katie Spencer with support from Wednesday's Wolves
DESCRIPTION:Raised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull\, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The people\, as with the land\, are moulded by tides and stark horizons. Stand in the same place for long enough and you can watch the sun rise over the North Sea and then sink into crop fields\, glowing auburn in late-summer sun. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through Katie Spencer’s music.\nThe songwriting\, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell\, James Taylor and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman\, flow into her sound\, carrying with them the warmth and idealism of the early 70’s folk and songwriter movements.\nKatie Spencer’s widely celebrated new album\, The Edge of the Land (2022)\, follows her debut release\, Weather Beaten (2019) which was praised for its unique song-craft\, spell-binding musicianship and crystal sonic clarity\, as she brought together fans of music from all backgrounds and walks of life. Delicate and un-rushed\, the ten songs on The Edge of the Land drift by like ships on the horizon\, yet intimacy and introspection still remain.\nThe inclusivity found in her recorded works is most apparent when on stage\, with a personal connection and humour that allows the listener time to appreciate the emotion of the music. Her historical gig list is extensive\, taking in the world-renowned Celtic Connections and Cambridge Folk Festival\, whilst performances with Danny Thompson and Alan Thomson have left audiences in awe of her confidence and craftsmanship.\nAs live music has returned to our world\, we can expect to see Katie Spencer where she belongs once more\, eyes closed\, in the moment\, performing.\n—\n“Her articulate picking\, with suggestions of folk and jazz\, frames intelligently written songs and is the backbone to her music.” Guitarist Magazine\n“One of the most satisfying and spellbinding singer-songwriter collections I’ve encountered in some time.” RnR Magazine ★★★★★ \nSupport is from one of Oxfordshires most underrated bands\, Wednesday’s Wolves. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:15pm.

SUMMARY:Honey & the Bear with support from Tamara
DESCRIPTION:Honey & the Bear were a tour de force on the UK Folk Festival circuit in 2022. The British folk and roots duo combine delicately interweaving vocal harmonies with emotive and evocative songwriting. With a diverse range of sounds and textures\, and rhythms that flow from the fast and furious to gentle ballads\, their live performances are spirited and dynamic. Conjuring stories in song\, they tell tales of Suffolk folklore\, courageous people they admire and their passion for nature which has been enchanting audiences up and down the country.\nThe multi-instrumentalist pair\, comprised of songwriters Jon Hart (guitar\, bass\, bouzouki) and Lucy Hart (guitar\, ukulele\, bass\, banjo\, mandolin & percussion)\, are often joined on-stage by band guests Evan Carson (percussion) and Toby Shaer (Fiddle/Flutes/Whistles) who also feature on both Honey & The Bear studio albums. Together they have played at many revered venues and festivals across the UK as well as travelled across the channel for their first European tour. They supported Sam Kelly & The Lost Boys on two UK tours and opened for The Shires at world renowned Snape Malting’s Concert Hall. They returned to Snape Maltings under their own steam just two years later to perform a sold out show.\n2020 and the onset of the coronavirus pandemic saw the duo grounded and all gigs cancelled\, but their music prevailed in the form of Sunday night facebook livestreams of which they performed thirty-two throughout the year 2020. After challenging themselves to write a new song for the first 12 weeks of the livestream\, they successfully managed to produce a second album. ‘Journey Through the Roke’ was released on 23rd April 2021. The album features many talented musicians including Toby Shaer (whistles\, harmonium\, flute\, fiddle\, bass)\, Evan Carson (drums\, bodhran\, percussion)\, Archie Churchill Moss of Moore Moss Rutter (melodeon) and Graham Coe of The Jellyman’s Daughter (cello).  Journey through the Roke received airplay by Mark Radcliffe on the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show.\nTheir debut studio album ‘Made In The Aker’ (released July 2019) was followed by a UK tour as a four piece band in October 2019. The album was well received by both their ever growing fan base and the critics.\nBorn and raised in Suffolk\, Lucy learned violin and drums at school\, sung in the Suffolk Jubilee choir and started songwriting at age 15. She taught herself guitar whilst at university in Canterbury\, and began performing her creations not long afterwards. At 27\, she released her debut band album ’Step Right On’\, songs from which you now hear her perform with Jon.\nJon\, a Yorkshire boy\, raised in Cambridgeshire\, Norfolk and Suffolk\, has been performing his own songs since his teens. A self taught guitarist\, his love of driving guitar riffs is a core aspect of his song writing process. He has released three band albums\, the latest of which was entitled ‘Level with me’\, featuring ‘wristburner’ which is a gig favourite. \nSupport is form Oxford based Tamara. \nDoors an bar 7pm\, music at 7:15pm

SUMMARY:Natalie Holmes with support from George Boomsma
DESCRIPTION:A consistently solid songwriter & musician at her foundation\, Natalie Holmes has been releasing music both solo and collaboratively since 2010\, with an unwavering energy for encouraging inward reflection and growth through her lyrics. Beginning the journey with grainy covers on YouTube\, Natalie now has countless EP’s and singles released under her own name\, as well as extensive self-produced demo albums on Bandcamp and Patreon where her close and connected fans support her. \nIn 2016 Natalie was asked to join Above & Beyond on their Acoustic World Tour as one of their lead vocalists\, on account of her ethereal yet heart-wrenching vocals\, performing in spaces like the Hollywood Bowl & Royal Albert Hall. Though collaboration with a wide range of electronic genres is something she enjoys making a large part of her musical tapestry\, she has also received attention for her solo material from Radio 2 + 6\, Record of the Day & Clash\, the latter quoting “an inspired return from a songwriter we will enjoy watching develop over the coming months and years”. \nIn 2020\, Tom Robinson gave ‘Dandelion’ a spin on his BBC 6 show\, which will feature on the album\, and you can find a number of original works by Natalie on ‘Calm’\, the #1 sleep & meditation app. \n‘The inventive but familiar\, simple but complex. She writes the kind of tunes that get inside your head and don’t let go’ – BBC Introducing in the West \n‘Rushing towards that emphatic finale\, it’s an inspired return from a songwriter we will enjoy watching develop over the coming months and years’ – Clash Magazine \nWe are pleased to welcome back George Boomsma to open the evening. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:15pm.

SUMMARY:Bill McKinnon and friends
DESCRIPTION:Bill turned up with a drum to his first audition in 1973. He was told to beat it and has never looked back.\nEarly on in his musical career he discovered that it is really difficult to sing and play the trombone at the same time.\nAfter 50 years of entertaining audiences near and far (even unto Newbury) Bill still enjoys singing old and new traditional folk songs\, good old singalong ones to join in with and the occasional self-penned stuff.\nIt is five years since Bill last played The Unicorn and he is accompanied once again by those two fabulous musicians Anne Tarrant and Linda Benton. We are looking forward to another cracking night of song\, laughter and jolly good cheer. \nSupport is from Luka FD. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:15pm.

SUMMARY:Montmorency live at The Unicorn Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Montmorency live at The Unicorn Theatre \nUnicorn Theatre\, Abingdon. Saturday 25 May 2024 \nMontmorency return to Abingdon with their brand of upbeat folk music\, intertwined with blues\, country and rock influences. They have made a name for themselves over the last few years around Oxfordshire by taking old folk songs and reworking them for new audiences. \nThey released their debut EP\, ‘Live at Newt Studios’\, in 2022 and are the process of working on a new release for this year. Their show at the famous Burton Taylor Studio in the centre of Oxford earlier in the year was a sell-out\, and with new material being added all the time\, the show in Abingdon will allow for a larger audience to see and hear their unique sound. \nThe Unicorn Theatre is a wonderful Elizabethan style venue\, well known for hosting great folk music acts over the years\, and the perfect venue for watching live music whilst still retaining an intimate feel. \nSupport\nMontmorency will be supported by Katie Grace Harris. Katie is a multi-tasking\, foot tapping\, piano\, dulcimer and accordion player. She’s a singer and story-weaver with a fast-growing reputation in the UK Folk world. SUMMARY:Benji Kirkpatrick with support from The Dicemen
DESCRIPTION:A veteran of the scene\, Benji Kirkpatrick is well known as a rhythmic driver of such outfits as Bellowhead and Faustus\, with his “memorably aggressive” (MOJO) style.

Enlisting fellow ex-Bellowhead member\, Pete Flood on drums and Jackie Oates and Megan Henwood collaborator\, Pete Thomas on bass\, Benji formed a power trio\, going by the name of ‘The Excess’. The band recorded their debut album in 2019\, ‘Gold Has Worn Away’\, released on Westpark Records. They managed to get a few gigs in before the music industry was destroyed and are now brimming with hard hitting songs and muscular instrumentals ready for festival stages.

Before the Excess album Benji’s last offering of original material was on ‘Boomerang’ (Navigator 2008) – it received much critical acclaim but came at a time when other projects were taking off so they took precedence and the album didn’t receive the live airing it deserved. His most recent solo studio release features the songs of his first musical icon\, Jimi Hendrix – ‘Hendrix Songs’ was released in September 2015 on EDJ Records alongside a national tour entitled ‘Bendrix’. The show included the projection of original artwork animations created by Shropshire artist\, Esther Thorpe. The project’s aim was to rediscover the song-writing of the legendary guitarist.

”This is a rare chance to hear the songs stripped back to their atmospheric essentials.” – The Sunday Times

”It’s testament to Jimi’s song-writing that the songs slip their identities so readily\, with Voodoo Child becoming a cowboy storm cloud and Crosstown Traffic revealing unexpected poignancy.” – Classic Rock

Those ‘other’ projects included the cacophonous behemoth that was Bellowhead\, the band that managed to sell more copies of an independently released folk album than any other to date. The album in question being ‘Hedonism’ (Navigator 2010)\, recorded in Abbey Road Studios and produced by John Leckie. They took ‘folk’ ever nearer to the mainstream and became one of the biggest touring acts in the UK for their final few years. They made one album with a major label\, ‘Revival’ (Island 2014)\, their last offering to the world before splitting in 2016. The band made a huge impact on the UK folk and roots scene and enjoyed appearances on ‘Later… with Jools Holland’ as well as headline slots at many festivals.\nIn 2017\, folk-rock pioneers Steeleye Span head-hunted Benji for their new line up\, 40 years after his Dad\, John\, was in the band. Regular tours ensued with 2019 being a big year\, as the band celebrated their 50th Anniversary and released a new album\, ‘Est’d 1969’.  After an enjoyable stint Benji has now left the band.

Benji is working again with Seth Lakeman\, featuring on his new album ‘Make Your Mark’ and touring with his band in 2022. Benji featured on 2004 mercury Prize nominated release  ‘Kitty Jay’\, this led to much live work and Benji became a member of Seth’s band between 2009 and 2012\, contributing to his long players ‘Freedom Fields’ and ‘Hearts and Minds’; their long time collaboration continues.

Faustus\, of which one third is Benji\, were dubbed ‘bloke folk’ by one reviewer and continue to create innovative and energetic renditions of traditional songs\, the latest collection being on ‘Death and Other Animals’ (Westpark 2016) produced by Rupert Christie whom Bellowhead had worked with on Revival.

www.faustusband.com

As part of the Shakespeare 400 celebrations in 2016\, Benji was invited to be involved in ‘The Fairy Portal Camp’\, put together by Leeds based theatre company\, Slung Low\, on commission from the Royal Shakespeare Company. A disparate group of musicians\, actors and dancers worked together to create new works every day for a week in the riverside setting of Avonbank Gardens in Stratford Upon Avon.

Benji has also toured and recorded with Maddy Prior (the voice of Steeleye Span) and Oysterband\, as well as with Oysterband singer\, John Jones’ solo projects (The Reluctant Ramblers) and played alongside the likes of Thea Gilmore\, Joan as Police Woman\, Marc Almond and Green Gartside. \nSupport is from The Dicemen. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:15pm.

SUMMARY:Belinda O'Hooley
DESCRIPTION:We are very pleased to welcome the very entertaining Belinda O’Hooley to The Unicorn Theatre. \nBelinda O’Hooley is an exceptionally gifted pianist\, singer\, songwriter\, and composer who has become renowned for her highly individual\, emotional\, yet sensitive musicality. She is also one half of the much-loved Yorkshire folk duo O’Hooley & Tidow alongside her wife Heidi Tidow; together described by The Guardian as ‘exceptional songwriters.’ The duo have been propelled into newfound fame for penning the theme tune to Sally Wainwright’s hit BBC1/HBO drama ‘Gentleman Jack’\, earning them global admiration\, an acting role for Belinda on the iconic TV drama Happy Valley\, Radio 4 Woman’s Hour and concerts that sell out months in advance. \nBelinda is also known for her inventive\, minimalist\, sometimes flamboyant accompanying of folk luminaries including Rufus Wainwright\, Nic Jones\, Jackie Oates and the Mercury nominated; Rachel Unthank and The Winterset. \nHer solo album ‘Inversions’ showcases Belinda’s abilities as a composer and pianist with many of the piano pieces inspired by the songs and tunes her father inherited from a long line of male musicians in the hills of the West coast of rural Ireland. Belinda: the first woman in her family to reclaim the tradition\, has found the freedom to express the music of her ancestors in her very own\, unconventional way\, evolving and migrating into some-thing you could describe as an inversion: a reversal of the norm. \nBelinda O’Hooley is an artist truly at one with her instrument. \n‘Goose-pimples\, hair standing on end\, pin-drop silence\, all of this and so\, so much more. The applause as she took her seat behind her piano once again\, was deafening and lengthy. Pure love lapping against the stage.’ Fatea \n‘Exquisite’ * * * * * The Guardian \n‘O’Hooley stops the whole of St George’s in its tracks.’ Bristol 24/7 \n‘Defiant\, robust\, northern\, poetical\, political folk music for the times we live in.’\nThe Independent \n‘Dense\, complex\, beautifully performed.’ * * * * Songlines \n

SUMMARY:Peter Knight and John Spiers with support from Calum Gilligan
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome the brilliant Peter Knight and John Spiers to The Unicorn Theatre. \nThe exquisite explorations of the liminal space that exists between traditional and classical music is what makes the music of Peter Knight and John Spiers so compelling and beguiling\, ultimately rendering genres irrelevant. \nThe duo has developed into one of the most thrilling exponents of traditional tunes and songs\, repurposing the material as jumping-off points into the most enchanting exploration. It’s largely through touring as a duo that they’ve been able to develop what has become an extraordinary partnership\, giving them the confidence to record their latest studio album\, Both in a Tune. Released in 2022\, it was chosen as one of the ‘10 Best New Albums from Around the World’ by the influential music journal\, SONGLINES. \nWhile Peter Knight\, as part of Steeleye Span’s classic 1970s line-up\, helped invent a brand of folk rock that is still influential today\, John Spiers as co-founder of the almighty Bellowhead has had an equally profound impact on the landscape of traditional music over the last two decades. \nThe pairing of violin and melodeon is not a new one\, but in the hands of Knight and Spiers\, improvisation and invention meet the listener at every turn. Together they have created a musical document that resonates with history\, but also something that should inspire future generations of musicians to engage with Britain’s folk dancing heritage\, and the beautiful\, mysterious tunes that can be found within that heritage. \nThese uniquely gifted musicians make a sublime pairing\, and create a live performance to be remembered for a long time. \n“An extraordinary collaboration between two musicians at the absolute top of their game. This is an adventure that takes in musical detours you’d be mad to ignore” – Tradfolk \n“A beautiful snapshot of two musicians at the pinnacle of their craft. Listeners will find themselves lost in something magical; anyone will struggle to find something as masterful as this for a long\, long time” – Bright Young Folk \nSupport is from Purbeck Rising winner Calum Gilligan\, who some may have seen in Faringdon or Harwell in recent years. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:15pm.

SUMMARY:The Alex Hart Duo with support from Elsi
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to bring Alex Hart (Seth Lakeman Trio\, Martin Barre Band) and her guitarist Adam Sweet to The Unicorn Theatre to kick off our 2024 programme. \nDescribed by BBC Radio 2 presenter Mark Radcliffe as “the Stevie Nicks of Folk”. The south-west based singer/songwriter Alex Hart is set for her most exciting and anticipated album release to date. \nAt 18 she collaborated with electronic duo Electronic Youth on a cover of Angie Stones’ “I Wish I Didn’t Miss You” which had huge global radio success reaching No.2 in the Music Week Dance Charts and was supported by Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1. \nThis recognition spearheaded a run of high-profile festivals performances and a slot opening for UK folk sensation Turin Brakes at the Lyme Regis Folk festival. Alex’s opening performances landed her two record deals\, as she was\nquickly snapped up by US label OK!Good Records and Right Track Records UK. Alex started working with Grammy Award winning songwriter and producer Terry Britten (famous for “What’s Love Got To Do With It for Tina Turner) and went on to release her critically acclaimed debut Album “On this Day” \nFollowing the success of Alex’s debut album\, her voice and musicianship caught the eye of legendary Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre\, who asked Alex to be a part of his band as a musician and vocalist for their European and international tour dates. Alex has performed and toured all over the UK/Europe with the band and has embarked on many international US tours. \nAlex also collaborates and performs alongside\, the critically acclaimed Devon born folk singer Seth Lakeman\, Alex’s voice as well her multi-instrumental playing features heavily on his brand-new album. The single “Higher We Aspire” received huge BBC Radio 2 support\, and Alex performed the song live on BBC Breakfast TV. \nAs well as a busy touring schedule\, Alex is constantly working on new music ready for new releases in 2023\, including her new album ‘VISIONS’ which has just been released this September alongside a successful UK tour. \n“This album has been a real labor of love for me. Each song tells a story about a certain time in my life\, some reflecting on relationships with friends\, family and my career. I wanted this album to resonate with others\, hopefully helping them through the difficult hurdles we face. This album is about feeling powerful and overcoming hard situations. One song\, however\, ‘Blackbird’ which features well-known folk artist Benji Kirkpatrick on Bouzouki\, is all about lockdown. Everytime I\nwalked around the park near my home I felt like the blackbird was following me. It was a constant reminder of my family and how much I missed seeing them. I’ve been very lucky to have some amazing guest appearances on my new record\, including Seth Lakeman and Martin Barre from Jethro Tull. They are great friends of mine\, I have toured the UK\, Europe and the USA with them and they have contributed highly to my journey in the music industry. The album artwork was created by Phil James\, an artist from Plymouth who is a dear friend of mine. He has captured the sentiment completely. Myself and Andy\, my husband got engaged near Yosemite in 2022\, so using the wanderlust photo was fitting for this project\, marking this poignant time in my life. \nWriting and recording with Josiah at Momentum Studios was also such a highlight\, it took a few months to gather the material together\, time spent alone first in my home studio and then bringing the ideas to Josiah\, where we would rework the songs together. We both played many of the tracks live and then overdubbed different instruments. I wanted to get the most organic sound as possible and I think we made a great team. Visions is definitely my best work so far. I am so proud of this album\, it is completely self-funded and it was so special to have complete control over every aspect. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.” \nAlex Hart is not only a talented vocalist\, but an accomplished musician too\, 2023 is set to be her most successful and exciting year yet. \n“Alex Hart is set to make a global impact” – THE GUARDIAN \n“Alex Hart is not only a talented vocalist\, but an accomplished musician too. Alex has grown as a musician over the years and is continually adding new instruments to her armoury.” – REVIEW MNPR MAGAZINE \nSupport will be from Elsi\, recently moved to Oxfordshire from Norfolk. Elsi has played at Ely Folk Festival (winning on the Club Tent stage)\, Cambridge Folk Festival and Folk East amongst others. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:15pm.

SUMMARY:The Lost Notes with support from Hugh Blaza
DESCRIPTION:As heard on BBC Introducing HW\, The Lost Notes are a 5-piece band based in Worcestershire and Birmingham. The principal songwriters are Ben and Oli. Oli likes folk and Ben digs jazz. Both are stubborn. Each seeks to exert their own subtle influence on the music. The result is part folk with a drag of soul roots\, a slug of gospel\, or downright country with a thump of jazz around the edges. They write songs for chin- strokers\, foot-stompers\, head-nodders and those who like to partake in the dark art of inarticulate dancing and hollering. All delivered in glorious 3 part harmonies.\nLowlifes and High Times is the follow up album to The Lost Notes’ critically acclaimed debut album Run Free Right Now. These new songs celebrate the ups and downs of journeymen\, despots\, sleazeballs\, fools\, the planet and the consciously idle.\nThey have built up a loyal fan base across the folk and festival circuit through performances at places such as Moseley Folk Festival\, Bromsgrove Folk Festival\, Beardy Folk Festival\, The Glee Club\, The Jam House\, the MAC\, Birmingham Conservatoire Theatre and folk clubs across the Midlands and beyond. \nSupport is from Oxford based Hugh Blaza.

SUMMARY:Honey & the Bear and Mishra
DESCRIPTION:British folk and roots duo Honey & the Bear combine delicately interweaving vocal harmonies with emotive and evocative songwriting. With a diverse range of sounds and textures\, and rhythms that flow from the fast and furious to gentle ballads\, their live performances are spirited and dynamic. Conjuring stories in song\, they tell tales of Suffolk folklore\, courageous people they admire\, their passion for nature and the odd heartbreak or two. \nThe multi instrumentalist pair\, comprised of songwriters Jon Hart (guitar\, bass\, bazouki) and Lucy Hart (guitar\, ukulele\, bass\, banjo\, mandolin & percussion)\, have been writing and performing together since early 2014\, having met at a songwriting event two years previous. Since then\, they have played at many revered venues and festivals across the UK as well as travelled across the channel for their first European tour. They supported Sam Kelly and the Lost Boys on two UK tours and opened for The Shires at world renowned Snape Malting’s Concert Hall. \nIn July 2019 they released their first full studio album ‘Made In The Aker’ which was followed by a UK tour as a four piece band in October 2019 alongside fellow musicians Toby Shaer of Sam Kelly & The Lost Boys & Cara Dillon and Evan Carson of Sam Kelly & The Lost Boys and The Willows. The album was well received by both their ever growing fan base and the critics. \n2020 and the onset of the coronavirus pandemic saw the duo grounded and many gigs cancelled\, but their music has prevailed in the form of Sunday night facebook live streams of which they performed thirty-two throughout the year 2020. After challenging themselves to write a new song for the first 12 weeks of the livestream\, they successfully managed to produce a second album in the Autumn. ‘Journey Through the Roke’ which was released on 23rd April 2021. The album features many talented musicians including Toby Shaer (whistles\, harmonium\, flute\, fiddle\, bass)\, Evan Carson (drums\, bodhran\, percussion)\, Archie Churchill Moss of Moore Moss Rutter (melodeon) and Graham Coe of The Jellyman’s Daughter (cello). \nBorn and raised in Suffolk\, Lucy learned violin and drums at school\, sung in the Suffolk Jubilee choir and started songwriting at age 15. She taught herself guitar whilst at university in Canterbury\, and began performing her creations not long afterwards. At 27\, she released her debut band album ’Step Right On’\, songs from which you now hear her perform with Jon. \nJon\, a Yorkshire boy\, raised in Cambridgeshire\, Norfolk and Suffolk\, has been performing his own songs since his teens. A self taught guitarist\, his love of driving guitar riffs is a core aspect of his song writing process. He has released three band albums\, the latest of which was entitled ‘Level with me’\, featuring ‘wristburner’ which is a gig favourite. \nMISHRA \nMishra are a global folk collective with strong roots in U.K folk\, out of which they weave a tight web of intricate\, Indian-influenced original music that defies definition and has already brought awards recognition since their formation in 2017. Kate Griffin (The Magpies) and Ford Collier (BBC R2 Folk Award nominated The Drystones) are the songwriting partnership behind Mishra\, drawing on their unique base of influences that encompasses folk music of the UK and America\, Indian classical music\, and soul to create a surprisingly accessible sound that audiences instantly connect to. Between the two of them\, Kate and Ford create a rich texture from their array of instruments: Irish low whistle\, banjo\, Indian tabla\, dobro\, African calabash\, and guitar\, all of which provide a vibrant backdrop to Kate’s striking vocals. Their set is entirely original and traditional\, apart from a popular cover of Gillian Welch’s Scarlet Town\, receiving airplay on the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show by Mark Radcliffe. \nMishra’s duo shows display Kate and Ford’s stunning musical connection\, while their quartet shows featuring renowned tabla player John Ball (Rafiki Jazz\, Indus) and jazz-folk double bassist Joss Mann-Hazell bring an even richer texture to the band’s core sound.
