SUMMARY:Abingdon Michaelmas Fair
DESCRIPTION:Abingdon Michaelmas Fair will take place on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th October 2021 from 12 noon to 11pm each day. \nThe Michaelmas Fair is the longest street fair in Europe\, running from the Market Place\, through the High Street\, The Square and the full length of Ock Street. This historic street fair has its origins in the shortage of labour following the Black Death of 1348/9. The Fair was a hiring fair\, the equivalent of today’s employment agencies and online job websites. \nThe Michaelmas Fair starts setting up from on Sunday\, after which there are road closures and diversions to enable the traditional street fair to take place. There are also closures and diversions the following week for the Runaway Fair. \nTo mark the start of the Fairs\, the Town Council is organising the traditional Fairground Service of Blessing and Dedication. This will take place at 7pm on Sunday 3rd October 2021 on the Galloping Horses in the Market Place. All are very welcome.

SUMMARY:ATOM Science Festival
DESCRIPTION:ATOM Festival of Science and Technology \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpdate: We’re excited to tell you that the ATOM Festival of Science and Technology will return on 11th and 12th June 2021 \nGet the latest updates and news of the 2021 Festival by signing up for the ATOM Newsletter.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere did the name come from? Professor Frank Close – one of the founders of the ATOM Festival (picture above) explains the surprising history behind an almost acronym… \n[Read the blog here]. \n\nATOM puts on diverse imaginative and family-friendly events to allow our community to discover world-class science and technology taking place right here\, as well as learning about the companies\, organisations and scientists who make it happen. ATOM helps build science capital\, partnering with schools to engage young people\, and encouraging everyone to develop a passion for science and its potential to change the world. \nThis year the Science Market in Abingdon’s historic Market Square and the legendary big Family Science Fair will NOT be there to attract crowds. We hope you understand. There will be science-led inspiration in locations thoughout the town which you can do as individuals and small\, socially distant and careful groups. \nSee all the festival weekend social media in June and look for geocache\, walking\, running and other activities. A small stand on Market Place will answer questions particularly from participants who don’t have much access to tech. A smart phone will prove useful to recognise QR codes. \n\n \nHannah Fry at ATOM19\n\nThe ATOM event is independent\, volunteer-run with some amazing ideas. So please – get inspired\, spread the word – and plug into the power of science on your doorstep! \nBecome a supporter | Volunteer | Follow us on Twitter\, Facebook\, Linked In and Instagram | Sign up for our latest news \n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n\nA big thank you to our major sponsors. \n  \n\n\n\n \n\n\nClick here for a full list of all sponsors and supporters of #ATOM2021.

SUMMARY:Kenton Cool\, mountaineer (book in advance)
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Speakers from the Edge. \nKenton Cool holds the British record for Everest ascents\, at 14 times. He is the only person in the world to have summited Everest\, Lhotse and Nuptse in one season\, completing the task in just six days. In Everest the Cool Way\, Kenton talks about his life of climbing and adventure\, from the current state of Everest\, climbing Aconcagua and skiing Denali\, to the jungles of Bolivia and the mountains of Papua. \nAt Amey Theatre\, Abingdon School advance booking online is essential. Carefulness with health and safety of self and others means the programme for this Summer is under constant review..  This includes patrons\, staff and students and is of the utmost importance. Therefore if Abingdon School deems it unsafe to reopen and/or Government legislation dictates\, they reserve the right to cancel any screenings. In this scenario\, the box office will refund the cost of booked and paid ticket(s). \nFor information about the COVID-19 precautions and procedures\, please click here.
