North Abingdon development Latest News

From next Monday 8th June, in addition to the north bound Lodge Hill A34 slip closure, David Wilson Homes commence 4 weeks of 4-way traffic lights at the Peachcroft Roundabout as Phase 2 of the works between them and Bellway to deliver the overall road infrastructure for North Abingdon.
RPG, the northern sites promoter and land lead, have set up a website to give information on these projects plus the District Centre part of the developments.

Key points:
On the Home Page it covers who is doing what and the working hours for David Wilson have now been confirmed as 07:00 to 20:00.
On the FAQs page at point 4, there is a link to click to ask questions. This opens an email window pre-addressed to Victoria Walker at RPG, who will deal with it. Victoria has put the website together and will be responsible for chasing and collating the developer updates every fortnight.
Once David Wilson get final confirmation from County Highways on their road space request, a planner will be added.
Bellway appear to have completed their Phase 1 2 weeks of traffic light-controlled works early, so the Twelve Acre Drive progress has been in line with programmed dates.

Back to school journey made easier by new Zebra Crossing for pupils using Faringdon Road

Oxfordshire County Council has commissioned this new crossing in time for the return to school having coordinated the construction with the surface dressing of Faringdon Road.

The new crossing request was raised with the County by the local division Councillor Nathan Ley – Abingdon North, OCC following comments from local residents.

As part of the overall improvements during the white lining of the road County Highways have also repainted the Zebra Crossing at the top of Spring Road.

Update on Peachcroft Roundabout / Oxford Road

Works are now expected to restart on 8 June, beginning with the sewerage and drainage works that require multi-way traffic lights. These works need to happen before construction of the new left-turn lanes and other highway improvements can begin.

Co-ordination has been happening behind the scenes between multiple developers, contractors, OCC highways and street works officers, Thames Water, bus operators, and local councillors to get the different work packages aligned so progress can finally move forward together.

Unfortunately this won’t be the end of the disruption, and the overall programme will still take several months.
Going forward, a North Abingdon works website is being set up that residents can be signposted to, this will be specifically to inform residents of the work schedule.

The site will be provided and updated by RPG Land the northern developments site promoter and the Town Council will link residents to it.

Update on Bellway Homes Work on Twelve Acre Drive

County Councillor Nathan Ley has shared the following update via social media:-

We have had confirmation that Bellway’s next highways works package can start on Tuesday 26 May.
This first phase is expected to take around 2–3 weeks and will include work on a crossing with pedestrian refuge island (#1) and preparation for a bus stop facility.

The light-controlled crossing (#2) follows after that. I’d hope the new paths on either side could be opened ASAP too.

This is part of the wider programme of works linked to the North Abingdon development, and I know residents will want clear, practical updates as things progress. Bellway and David Wilson Homes are meeting to agree the next phases and produce a clearer joint programme.

They’ve also agreed to a dedicated website so residents can be pointed to one place for updates. I’ll share that as soon as it goes live, maybe next week?

The Town Council will share any updates from Cllr Ley as we see them.

Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council honours its commitment to retain a cinema in the town centre

The Council is happy to announce that it has, today, sold the Abbey Hall to the Abbey Hall Cinema Ltd after completing the necessary formalities. This will allow the cinema operators both to continue to run the cinema and to provide significant improvements to the building which the Council was unable to afford.

In addition, the historic Guildhall will now have access to a new kitchen which will enable residents to enjoy a far wider range of events in the Guildhall’s beautiful and historic rooms.

Both of these developments are in accordance with the council’s policy to revitalise our town centre both in the day and the evening.
“We have worked very hard to ensure a thriving cinema in the centre of Abingdon. The transfer of Abbey Hall to Abbey Hall Cinema Ltd will now give the cinema operator confidence to carry out their ambitious investment plans,” said Cllr. Oliver Forder, Chair of the Abbey Hall Working Party.

“We have been assiduous in working through the legalities to safeguard the Guildhall and the publicly owned areas around the building, whilst allowing the cinema to go from strength to strength.”
The legal documents for the sale were formally signed at an Extraordinary Council Meeting held on Tuesday 12th May.

Bank Holiday Office Closure

Please note that the Town Council offices will be closed for the Bank Holiday on Monday, 4th May. We reopen at 10am on Tuesday, 5th May.

Lodge Hill Interchange Updated Information update from Oxfordshire County Council

Thursday 30th April

There will be a night-time closure of the A34 southbound off-slip at Lodge Hill, to allow for the installation of new temporary traffic management measures. This will be in place from 9pm – 6am. A signed diversion route will be in place. Vehicles wishing to leave or join the A34 should use the Hinskey Hill or Marcham interchanges.

Friday 1 May

From 6am, the A34 southbound off-slip road at Lodge Hill will reopen with a new temporary alignment in place. Traffic leaving the A34 southbound will only be able to turn left, onto the A4183 towards Abingdon.
Vehicles wishing to turn right onto the A4183 towards Hinksey Hill, must turn left and continue to the Dunmore Road/Twelve Acre Drive roundabout, where they can safely turn around and return in the opposite direction.

The Little Basement Museum

The Little Basement Museum is a historical hidden gem of the town and is located at No. 4 E St Helen Street, one of the oldest streets in Abingdon.

Visitors can now book and explore the treasures hidden beneath the property ONLY on Thursdays between 11am and 2pm.

Tour limit 6 persons at a time. Max 30 minute visit. Children over 12 only.

Suggested donation £2 per adult £1 child 12-16 yrs.

LBM Disclaimer

The Little Basement Museum is accessed via a narrow corridor and a set of steep and narrow steps. Visitors must be fit and comfortable with those features and take responsibility for their own safety. Children must be over12 years old and supervised by a parent or guardian. Appropriate footwear and clothing is recommended. There are no facilities on site, and we recommend using the Museum facilities before you go.

The route to the LBM is via a historic street and house which add to its unique character, but it means uneven pavement and narrow passages. The visit lasts no more than 30 minutes, make sure you are comfortable walking and standing for that length of time as there is no seating on site. If there’s any activity you are unable to do or if you have a concern, please contact us before booking. If you have any medical conditions or injuries that may affect your mobility, please let the organisers know before the start of the visit and if you feel unwell during the visit please let your guide know.

The lighting levels are quite low, and interpretation accessibility is limited. We are working to improve this in time.
