The town council commissioned a new active travel map which has been produced by Sustrans. The map focuses on walking, wheeling and cycling in and around Abingdon and has been funded by the town council and Oxfordshire County Council.
Active travel refers to:
- walking
- scooting
- cycling
- Park and ride.
The active travel map shows:
- key locations including schools, local shops and green spaces
- how to get around on foot, by cycle or by public transport
- further information about walking and cycling routes in the local area.
You can download the map for free below or pick up a printed copy in the town council information centre.
Action for change
In March 2019, the town council declared a climate emergency in recognition of the global warming crises and in 2022 a Green Forum was established with the support of the town council in acknowledgement that local action is needed to meet the challenges presented.
The Green Forum brings together residents and groups to respond to the climate emergency and one of the actions identified was to support active travel. Community groups identified a need for an active travel map and the concept was developed by Sustrans with town councillors and key community groups
The map aims to make Abingdon a more liveable place by generating greater awareness of existing active travel routes. Active travel benefits health and wellbeing, improves street safety and helps reduce our environmental impact.
