September
The Festival in our town is co-ordinated by the town’s civic society.
In 2020 walks were more self guilded and some of the events went on line. A lot of fascinating film and heritage can be viewed on you tube and Abingdon Heritage social media.
Heritage Open Days are held in September nationwide and in other parts of Europe. Due to its popularity some towns and heritage locations are varying or increasing the length of their period of special events.
Heritage Open Days makes a very interesting period in which to visit Abingdon-on-Thames as many heritage properties may be open that might normally be closed, including private homes. Some places are only open by appointment,. Part of the unique St Helen’s almshouses, which are still in use today, are open in certain years along with houses of mediaeval origin in town, picking up on a theme for the year. In addition, the historical and civic societies of the town provide guided walks and exhibitions.
For further information about this year’s event see our events calendar or www.abingdonheritage.org.uk and for more about the activities of the civic society www.friendsofabingdon.org.uk
Abingdon County Hall Museum has beautiful images of the town on display and hundreds of fascinating objects.
