The beating heart of this historic modern market town is the lively calendar of events that are organised by community groups, partnership organisations, schools and businesses as well as chamber of commerce and councils. Whether your favourite way to chill out is wandering through a market full of local food samples, witnessing an age old living tradition, the web diary here is for you. Prefer to cheer from the riverbank as boats race past? There will be an event coming up on the Thames or possibly the Ock river that you will love.
As this is an umbrella website for the town’s activities please remember to Click here to access the Abingdon-on-Thames events page. You or anyone you know can add any event in town for the year 2021 just have a portrait-shaped jpeg to upload as a main image to attract people. It helps if the first image is portrait-shaped, interesting, with permission if any faces are included. A poster can be uploaded as a second image.
Events include lots for the children at County Hall Museum, the leisure centre, Culham Adventure Park, Snakes and Ladders soft play centre and the parks and gardens in season. There is the option to add an online event but most of the events offered by local clubs will be on their own websites.
Music at the Unicorn has some special events and have asked us to say that next year’s programme is out. The town now has a new cinema www.theabbey.ac for all the new release films and some other entertainment. Excellent dolby sound and a varied programme every day afternoon and evening. Even some morning screenings are on offer. The entrance to Screen One is at the rear of Guildhall and Screen Two sometimes makes use of our town’s Unicorn Theatre. The postcode for both cinemas is OX14 3JD near a lot of civic car parks.
Drama at the Unicorn Theatre includes the Festival of One-Act Plays during the first week in June and following the May jazz festival all types of music are on offer from Music at the Unicorn.
Live link ups with national theatre are held at Amey Theatre and Nag’s Head has outdoor screenings. The town has an active film society for continental and some quirky films including an annual silent classic film with a British Film Institute pianist. Crabtree Place of Audlett Drive is the Ab Films base on Thursday evenings.
Abbey Chamber Concerts offer a long-standing series of chamber concerts by top-quality local musicians on one Sunday each month, at St Nicolas church.
Free tea and coffee and an opportunity to talk to the musicians, after each concert.
