Heritage Weekend

September

This year the Festival is organised by the town's civic society. There w ill be more on heritage websites near the time. The main theme is Abingdon 1919 Coming Home, Moving On.

There will be an exhibition 14th to 22nd September, talks, open properties mainly on Saturday 21st September and a variety of themed walks on Sunday 22nd September.

Heritage Open Days are held in September nationwide and in other parts of Europe. Due to its popularity some towns and heritage locations are varying or increasing the length of their period of special events.

Heritage Open Days makes a very interesting period in which to visit Abingdon-on-Thames as many heritage properties may be open that might normally be closed, including private homes.  Some places are only open by appointment,. Part of the unique St Helen’s almshouses, which are still in use today, are open in certain years along with houses of mediaeval origin in town, picking up on a theme for the year. In addition, the historical and civic societies of the town provide guided walks and exhibitions.

For further information about this year's event see our events calendar or www.abingdonheritage.org.uk and for more about the activities of the civic society www.friendsofabingdon.org.uk

Abingdon County Hall Museum has beautiful images of the town on display all Summer 2019.
