SUMMARY:Gentle Angry Women film and Q&A with director
DESCRIPTION:Abbey Cinema in Abingdon are showing a new film about Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp\, “Gentle Angry Women”\, followed by a Q&A with the director\, Barbara Santi of Folklife Films. It follows 3 teenage women as they learn about Greenham Common Peace Camp for the first time\, and realise the parallels with their own activism today. Now a nature-rich common\, Greenham Common was a USAF base which housed nuclear-armed Cruise Missiles for about 9 years in the 1980s. Many Abingdon residents supported the protests which led eventually to its removal.

SUMMARY:Screening of My Extinction
DESCRIPTION:What does it take for us to act on the climate crisis – especially if we’re the kind of person who should already be acting? \nIn this funny\, relatable portrait\, a concerned yet ineffectual dad finds the first step is letting those unbearable feelings of climate anxiety in\, instead of pushing them aside. \nBut as he meets others like him\, he discovers how oil-backed propagandists funded our denial and paralysis. He sets out to unmask the vested interests responsible\, helping raise a generation’s leading authors in a vibrant chorus. \nMY EXTINCTION is a revealingly honest account of how to feel your feelings\, act on your privilege\, and get active when threatened with extinction. \nStay after the screening to join us for the panel discussion. Daniel\, a climate activist and student at the University of Oxford will be joining us. He has recently been arrested 4 times surrounding high profile protests at the Dippy the Dinosaur exhibit\, the King’s coronation and the 1st match day of the 2nd Ashes test between England and Australia. Other than that he says he is a big fan of cooking\, the outdoors and is qualified to teach English as a foreign language. He is happy to join One Planet Abingdon to contribute to the screening of My Extinction at The Abbey Cinema. We appreciate his time and hope you will join us too!

SUMMARY:Screening of Finite - The Climate of Change
DESCRIPTION:“Rich Felgate has spent years documenting climate activists. “FINITE: The Climate of Change” depicts their heroism and selflessness. But most of all it shows their striking sanity in an insane world.” – Adam McKay\, Academy-award winning director (The Big Short\, Vice\, Don’t Look Up)\n“Urgent and heroic. Roaring with the rage and hope needed in our age of crisis.” – Mark\nRylance\, Academy-award winning actor (Bridge of Spies\, Ready Player One\, Bones and All) \nIn Germany\, concerned citizens step forward to save an ancient forest from one of Europe’s\nbiggest coal mines. They form an unlikely alliance with a frustrated community in rural England who are forced into action to protect their homes from a new opencast coal mine. FINITE: The Climate of Change is an insider’s view of the world of direct action; a raw\, authentic and emotional insight into the David and Goliath battle between frontline communities\, activists and fossil fuel corporations. \nBooking is required\, please book your tickets via the Cinema website – The Abbey. \nLet us know if you can’t afford it but would like to come. We have sponsored some tickets for young people. Cinema opens at 6pm for socialising\, film starts at 730pm and is followed by a panel discussion and drinks in the bar after where the conversations will continue!

SUMMARY:The Arts Society Abingdon Lecture - A Touch of he Sun by Sarah Lenton
DESCRIPTION:A Touch of the Sun by Sarah Lenton \nThe oddest ‘star’ in opera is the Sun. Its appearance in The Magic Flute triggers the finale\, when everybody dances off bathed in happy\, rational daylight. But other operas are more wary about the heat. It’s the baking sun that precipitates the disastrous passions in Carmen and Aida\, and what about that moment in the year when the sun is at its strongest – midsummer itself. The lecture looks at operas like The Fairy Queen\, A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, Faust\, and especially Lohengrin – all set at this odd time of the year\, when quiet English woods and respectable German towns find themselves on the edge of fairyland. \nVisitors are very welcome to attend this lecture\, cost £6.00. If you are unable to come in person\, you can view at 10.30am and 2pm live on Zoom. Please email info@theartssocietyabingdon.org.uk for further information about the Venue\, any last minute changes and updates. SUMMARY:The Arts Society Abingdon Lecture - Bess of Hardwick:'a woman of masculine understanding and conduct'
DESCRIPTION:20th April  10.30 and 2pm – Bess of Hardwick: ‘a woman of masculine understanding and conduct’ by  Gillian White \nBess of Hardwick is one of the most fascinating women of the sixteenth century. Four times married\, she survived scandal and disgrace\, and\, through ambition and ability\, climbed the social ladder to become England’s premier countess and\, arguably\, the second richest woman in the kingdom. She was by turns a builder\, a dynast and an intriguer. A friend of Elizabeth I\, sometime gaoler to Mary\, Queen of Scots\, and grandmother to a potential queen\, Bess moved deftly in and out of the pages of Elizabethan history. This lecture tells Bess’s story: the story of a woman who simply did not know her place! \nVisitors welcome to attend – £6. For further information about venue\, future lectures and events email info@theartssocietyabingdon.org.uk. Lectures last about an hour\, but leave time for announcements etc. \n

Turner \nTurner’s lifetime coincided with an age of scientific discovery and technological advances. We will look at Turner’s fascination with the forces shaping the landscape\, and examine the way he addressed the complicated\, evolving relationship between humans and the natural world\, particularly within his images of steam-powered technology in Industrial Revolution Britain.
