DESCRIPTION:Paint Abingdon Pink\nRaising Awareness (2009–Present) \nThis exhibition charts the evolution of the event from its beginnings in October 2009 through to the present day. News cuttings and imagery follow moments such as its expansion in scale\, the adaptation to a virtual format in 2020\, and its renaming in 2025 to Paint Abingdon Pink. Working with Abingdon and Witney College a series of flyers/posters and logo concepts were designed by students; there is also a showcase all acts involved in this year’s event. \nThe exhibition concludes on the weekend of Paint Abingdon Pink\, raising awareness of breast cancer\, donations will be welcomed and contribute to help them continue their vital research. \nFREE Admission \nAttic Gallery

DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the MGA\, one of the most successful MG models\, this exhibition looks at the development of the design\, the influence of speed-record breakers and experimental prototypes\, and it shines a spotlight on Syd Enever\, the ‘father’ of the MGA. \nWith memories of the MG factory still present in the town\, we hope that this will be another MG story of interest to local people and to MG enthusiasts who visit us from around the world. TO bring the story to life we will display MGA-related artefacts courtesy of the MG Car Club as well as the Museum’s collection of MG models through the ages\, from the very beginning to the 21st century. \nThe MGA exhibit will run at Abingdon Museum until the end of June 2026. Together you will then go on to further study and critique his paintings and poems in a session of discussion and discovery. DESCRIPTION:This six-week course inspired by Oswald Couldrey – arguably Abingdon’s most famous artist and poet of the 20th century – offers a journey through drawing\, poetry\, photography and contemporary painting techniques. \n\nRunning every Friday from 20 February to 27 March\, 10am to 12pm in the Museum Kempster Room\, there are 10 places available for this course.\nBooking is essential\, a place costs £180 which includes materials.\nContact the Museum reception to book and make payment – 01235 523703\nor email abingdon.museum@abingdon.gov.uk. \n\nInitially\, Helen will guide you through Couldrey’s exhibition which is on display at Abingdon Museum for the first three months of 2026. Together you will then go on to further study and critique his paintings and poems in a session of discussion and discovery. Equipped with a new-found knowledge of Couldrey’s style and his creative techniques it will then be your turn to take to the streets of Abingdon. In an homage to the artist – who influences Helen’s own colour palette and style of composition – you will study the historic town’s architecture and meandering streets\, and begin the process of creating your own responses. Using his poems to help your aesthetic response\, you will photograph\, draw and paint the contemporary town through a Couldrey-style lens.\nThis will help to develop your understanding of perspective through drawing\, your composition skills and how colour pallets influence the artist. You will then be working with contemporary painting techniques that will further enhance your skills and build on the range and style of media you use in your art.\nThe course will culminate in writing your own poems inspired by your artwork and the town of Abingdon. \n*Good cameras are not necessary\, a phone camera will be fine. \nHelen J S Edwards studied BA Fine Art and later completed an MA in Artist-Teacher Practice at Oxford Brookes University.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: 'Text & Texture' - the artworks of Pat Russell and Janet Boulton
DESCRIPTION:Pat Russell and Janet Boulton were both acclaimed artists who lived in Abingdon for many years. \nIn 1986\, they both attended a paper making workshop at Oxford Polytechnic (later Oxford Brookes University). Inspired by the possibilities of this medium\, they decided to set up their own paper making studio and start creating art using paper pulp. DESCRIPTION:Oswald Jennings Couldrey is Abingdon’s best-known twentieth-century artist. He was born into a local family of seed merchants and agricultural suppliers which for several generations had included musicians\, scholars and teachers\, especially at Abingdon School\, then Roysse’s School. Oswald went up to Pembroke College\, Oxford as an Abingdon Scholar\, then gained a teaching qualification and entry to the Education Service of the Indian Civil Service\, living and working in India from 1909-1919\, for eight years as Principal of the Rajamundry College of Art in Andra Pradesh.\nThis exhibition shows painting made during these years\, complimented by examples of his poetry. \nFREE ADMISSION

Learn how the war impacted the lives of local people through food shortages\, the threat of air raids\, war work in the industries\, and the influx of evacuees and armed forces personnel. Take a closer look at the roles of women and how they experienced the war and the post-war period. SUMMARY:Exhibition: A Geologist's Guide to Abingdon
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition will provide some background and context to our many fossil finds in the collection\, starting with an introduction to rock strata and how they were discovered by William Smith over 200 years ago. \nAbingdon stands on a layer of Jurassic rock called Kimmeridge Clay. In that period\, the continents as we know them today had not formed yet\, and Abingdon was submerged in a shallow sea. This is why most of the fossils found in Abingdon are of marine creatures. There were some coastal areas nearby\, though\, as proven by the finds of dinosaur footprints at Ardley near Bicester.\nWe also put Abingdon into the context of other rock strata from the Jurassic period which are present in the wider Abingdon area\,\nand how they can be observed in the landscape. \nThis exhibition will go up in the Sessions Gallery of the Museum. In May it will be joined by a second display in the Attic\, showcasing recent fossil finds here in Abingdon. \nFree Admission

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Atomics to Medieval Knights
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to the positive visitors’ feedback and high attendance\, we are happy to let you know that the exhibition “Atomics to Medieval Knights – a history of Fitzharris Manor Estate” has been extended until Sunday 6th April.  \nThis tells the story of Fitzharris Manor\, from its beginning after the Norman Conquest\, when it was granted to a knight called Owen or Oin. One of his descendants was called Fitzharry\, whose name attached itself to the Manor and is still reflected in the modern housing estate. We track the history of the Manor through time\, and how the Manor House changed with a succession of owners. The exhibition then focusses on the coming of the AERE research establishment at Harwell\, which brought an influx of new people to the town – the “Atomics”. In order to provide housing for them\, a new estate was built on the site of Fitzharris Manor – the Fitzharris Estate. The exhibition looks at the construction\, the design\, and the people’s life on the estate and how the coming of the Atomics changed the town. It also lifts the lid on what went on at Harwell\, and some events which shaped world history but took place right on our doorstep. Much of the research into the history of the estate has been done by Mike Evans of the Fitzharris Estate Residents Association\, whose support makes the exhibition possible.

They are commonly believed and widely repeated – but are they really true? These stories include those of secret passages linking ancient buildings\, spiral staircases in castles giving advantage to right-handed defenders\, ship timbers used in the construction of buildings on land\, blocked doors in churches which are thought to keep the Devil out and claims to be the oldest pub in the city. \nJames Wright will explain the development of such myths and investigate the underlying truths behind them. Sometimes the realities hiding behind the stories are even more interesting\, romantic\, and exciting than the myth itself… \nThe speaker\, James Wright (Triskele Heritage)\, is an award winning buildings archaeologist. He has two decades professional experience of ferreting around in people’s cellars\, hunting through their attics and digging up their gardens.
