SUMMARY:Exhibition: “Celebrating Abingdon Women in the Arts and Sciences”
DESCRIPTION:In our first exhibition for 2024 Abingdon Museum will be “Celebrating Abingdon Women in the Arts and Sciences”. It will highlight the lives of remarkable women\, some who lived in Abingdon and made major contributions to the cultural life of the town\, some who came from Abingdon and went out into the world to accomplish great things. In the visual arts they are Pat Russell and Janet Boulton\, who set up their own paper-making studio\, and Charlotte Hardcastle\, whose delicate and highly accurate botanical drawings are preserved in a New Zealand museum. Representing the written word they are Dorothy Richardson\, who wrote some of the first modernist novels\, and historian Agnes Baker\, who bridged literature and history by bringing local history to life through plays and pageants. Also from the field of history are Gabrielle Lambrick\, who researched the history of Abingdon Abbey in particular\, and was an important member of two societies dedicated to local history; Mieneke Cox\, who told the story of Abingdon through the museum displays and a series of books; and Marion Wenzel who was the curator of the Abbey Buildings and researched one of Abingdon’s most intriguing archaeological finds\, the Islamic Glass. Representing science is Mary Buckland\, née Morland\, who made important contributions to palaeontology\, particularly with her detailed drawings of fossils\, including those of Megalosaurus\, the first scientifically described dinosaur. \nIn telling the stories of these women we want to highlight the contributions women have made in all fields of endeavour\, but also emphasise their connection with Abingdon – something our town can be proud of. \n  \nLocation: Sessions Gallery (First Floor) \nFree Admission

SUMMARY:Exhibition 'Common Land' - Kate Hammersley 1/10 to 23/12
DESCRIPTION:Recent drawings\, film\, objects and photographs about spending twelve moments in time in the English landscape. The artist follows red deer tracks in wheat fields during harvest time which were filmed on the farm she grew up on as well as documenting desire paths on common land including New Hinksey Meadow Oxford and Pipe Green\, which is owned by the residents of a street. The exhibition features 360° drawings created using seven colours from the light spectrum in one hand and reflects on themes of permanence and displacement. The works were created during the artist’s convalescence from cancer treatment and feature a continuous line running through the landscape. \nKate Hammersley is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors and is supported by Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:The Abingdon Sea Monster
DESCRIPTION:A talk by leading palaeontology expert Professor Dave Martill of the University of Portsmouth \nWhile dinosaurs roamed the Jurassic landscape\, Abingdon was submerged beneath a treacherous sea. One denizen of this deep was Pliosaurus\, a ferocious marine reptile that truly can be called a prehistoric monster. With a crocodile-like skull and a smile of dagger-like teeth\, its strong\, but short neck allowed it to twist and thrash its prey to pieces. Its barrel-shaped body was propelled through the water by four gigantic flippers. A fully grown individual was at least twenty metres long\, and it weighed several tons. It ate ichthyosaurs and its close relatives\, the long-necked plesiosaurs\, as well as any number of gigantic fishes and squid. For around ten million years Pliosaurus was Europe’s largest predator.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: ‘It’s Not All Black and White – Abingdon in True Colours’ by Martin Wackenier
DESCRIPTION:Due to popular demand Martin’s photographic exhibition at Abingdon Museum is extended until Sunday 9th January 2022. \nAbout the artist:\n“Originally from Ypres in Belgium\, I lived in Abingdon for the last 13 years now and very much consider it as my home. Over the last 13 years I have been capturing the town and its people on many different occasions from Party in the Park\, bun throwing\, Remembrance Day\, dragon boat racing\, Morris men\, local musicians\, etc. As a professional photographer for the last ten years\, I have also had the opportunity to capture many families\, weddings\, graduations\, christenings\, proms\, new arrivals\, etc. for both the people of Abingdon as well as many locations across the world including as official photographer for The Henley Royal Regatta\, London Fashion Week\, Music Festivals\, and commercial shoots for many different companies. \nThe last year and a half have seen many changes and required many adaptations to everybody’s working and social life. As a precursor I launched my first virtual exhibition online earlier this year consisting of 6 different rooms which was a great success and made me even more determined to have my work featured locally at our town’s museum. The exhibition you will see before is called “ It’s not all black and white\, Abingdon in true colours” which features a collection of photographs from the last 13 years depicting our town and it’s people in all its glory which I hope will give the viewer a real insight into our stunning town by the Thames.
