SUMMARY:Beating the bounds
DESCRIPTION:The Charter granted to Abingdon in 1556 defined the boundaries of the Town and included the provision for the “Mayor\, Bailiffs and Burgesses…and their Successors to make perambulations (of the Boundaries)”  This tradition of Beating the Bounds has been a special occasion in the past\,  but had lapsed and was only revived a few years ago as the New Year Day Boundary Walk. \nThe Friends of Abingdon Civic Society have added the Boundary Walk to their programme of guided walks \nThis year the walk will be led by Cllr Helen Pighills\, who will be joined by Town Crier Patrick Bird. \nThe event will start from the Market Place at 11am\, and will take no longer than 2 hours.

DESCRIPTION:As usual there will be a great opportunity to work off any after-effects from Christmas and New Year’s Eve with an informative and sociable New Year’s Day guided walk round the town’s historic boundary. This year’s walk will be led by Councillor Helen Pighills and accompanied by a Town Crier. \nIt will start at 11.00 from the Market Place and usually takes about 2 hours. The finishing point is at Abingdon Lock\, but the route is never far from the Town Centre so those who need to finish earlier can easily do so. \nThe route is flat and dog and buggy-friendly\, but one stretch can be a little bit muddy sometimes\, so please wear sensible footwear – and dress according to the weather on the day!
