SUMMARY:Heritage Weekend 2025
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Abingdon’s fascinating architectural history is the theme of this year’s Heritage Weekend. As the longest continuously inhabited town in Britain there is plenty to see and discover. \n\nVisit our Roysse room exhibition “Abingdon’s Historic buildings – Lost\, Recorded and Understood” to rediscover some of our town’s lost buildings (from mansions to the workhouse)\, view pictures of the town taken during the second world war and find out how to be a “house detective”. Saturday and Sunday 10am – 4pm\nCall in to Unit 25 in Bury Street to see our “Evolving Abingdon” exhibition about what was there before the precinct\, the Charter and Stratton Way – and why it all changed in the 1960s and 70s. Friday – Monday 10am – 4pm\nAlso in Unit 25\, “Reaching for the Stars”: find out about the history of the Culham site from its days as a wartime airfield through to hosting the JET project\, and hear about the latest plans to bring fusion energy onto the grid and into our homes.\nEnjoy a re-enactment of Roman life and witness rural building crafts of a bygone age in the ancient Abbey Buildings. Exhibitions Saturday only 10am – 4pm\, Medieval Buildings open Sunday.\nVisit some of the 12 or more fascinating buildings which are opening: new for this year are the Old Gaol foyer\, the ultra-modern Sophos Building and the Christchurch barn conversion.\nExplore the rich architectural history of our parish church\, St Helens.\nTake a guided walk on the Sunday – or follow one of our self-guided trails.\nTake a treasure trail of Abingdon and discover aspects of our town’s long history told through the buildings. SUMMARY:VE80 Celebration
DESCRIPTION:On May 8\, 2025\, we mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day\, when the nation unites to celebrate 80 years of peace since the end of World War II in Europe. \nIt was a war that claimed the lives of the 56 men remembered on Abingdon’s war memorial and a further 47 from Abingdon School. \nAbingdon Royal British Legion\, with support from Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council\, is marking these momentous anniversaries with events honouring the sacrifices made by townsfolk at home and abroad. \nGabby Barody\, mayor of Abingdon said: “This year\, on this significant anniversary\, we honour and celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of those who secured our freedom. We especially recognise our veterans here in Abingdon\, whose service and dedication continue to inspire us. Their legacy reminds us to cherish and uphold the peace they fought for.” \n \n  \n  \nThe role the town played in World War II has been at the heart of the plans and the commemorations begin at 9am on May 8 with a town cry from the roof top of Abingdon’s County Hall. This will be followed by a ceremony at the town’s war memorial at noon when wreaths and blue flowers for peace will be laid. \nChurch bells will ring throughout the town at 6.30pm. \nAt 7.30 pm on May 8 there will a concert at St Helen’s Church\, the church at the heart of the commemorations 80 years ago\, featuring Abingdon Town Band and members of Abingdon Drama Club. \nOn Saturday May 10\, activities focus on Abingdon RBL Spring Road social club with a display of the Operation Overlord model railway. It will remain on show on Sunday May 11. \nSunday May 11 also sees a rally of MGs on Abingdon Market Place and an exhibition of the role of MG factory played in the war effort\, building everything from 16 ton tanks and 3\,000 sets of wading equipment to allow the D-Day landings to fuel dipsticks and blood centrifuges. I Vow to Thee My Country \nAll events are free with donations to the Poppy Appeal. \nOf course\, the war didn’t end on May 8. It wasn’t until August when Victory over Japan was declared that the true celebrations could begin. In August\, there will be a fun bun throwing contest to see who can throw a bun the furthest. \n· Why are blue flowers being laid on VE Day? Blue flowers are associated with calmness\, passion\, appreciation and serenity. They symbolise peace\, tranquillity and harmony. \nWords of Winston \nWhen Winston Churchill addressed the nation\, he acknowledged the sacrifices made\, reminding the nation that they had stood alone against tremendous odds but had never faltered. \n“God bless you all. This is your victory!” he said. “It is the victory of the cause of freedom in every land. In all our long history\, we have never seen a greater day than this. \n“Everyone\, man or woman\, has done their best. Everyone has tried. Neither the long years\, nor the dangers\, nor the fierce attacks of the enemy\, have in any way weakened the independent resolve of the British nation. God bless you all. “ \nAnd he did not forget those in Far East where war continued until August 15 when Japan surrendered. \n“Be of good cheer and rejoice with us on this day. Let my words and my message penetrate to the remotest villages of your lands. Lift up your hearts\, for we are coming.” \nI Vow to Thee My Country \nJoin Colin Thackery\, Chelsea Pensioner\, who is leading the nation in singing this hymn at 9.30pm on May 8. \nI vow to thee\, my country\, all earthly things above Entire and whole and perfect\, the service of my love The love that asks no question\, the love that stands the test That lays upon the altar\, the dearest and the best The love that never falters\, the love that pays the price The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice \nAnd there’s another country\, I’ve heard of long ago Most dear to them that love her\, most great to them that know We may not count her armies\, we may not see her king Her fortress is a faithful heart\, her pride is suffering And soul by soul\, and silently her shining bounds increase And her ways are ways of gentleness\, and all her paths are peace \nMusic and Music by Gustav Holst and Cecil Spring

The Friends of Abingdon co-ordinate a weekend of open properties\, exhibitions and activities to showcase the town’s rich history. We link up with the national Heritage Open Days who suggest a theme each year. This year it is “Transport\, Routes and Connections.” \nAbingdon was connected by a network of paths\, roads and waterways which sustained trade\, travel and daily life for thousands of years: \n\nLook at old maps\, pictures and stories in two exhibitions\, one in the historic Guildhall and one at the Long Alley Almshouses.\nLearn about the Lost Railway of Abingdon at Unit 24 and see an 18 foot working model (00 gauge) of Abingdon station\, yard and tracks\nFamilies with young children will enjoy the Brio trainset available to play with in the Roysse Room (and also available to win by completing our town trail).\nOlder children will enjoy the Iron Age Experience at the Abbey Buildings (Saturday only) with crafts and interactive demonstrations.\nAnd “kids” of all ages will want to test themselves against the Fun Facts quizmaster!\nConnections aren’t just physical and the displays include information about the Abingdon telephone exchange (now gone) and the DAWN talking newspapers service (still thriving).\nAbingdon Artists will be holding their “Landscape in a Day” open competition on Saturday – watch them at work and see the results in a display in St Nic’s Church.\nOn Sunday there will be a celebration of MG cars\, Abingdon’s most famous export\, with over 20 vehicles in the Market Place.\n\nHistoric properties around the town will be open to view including Abingdon Guildhall\, St Helen’s and St Nicolas’ Churches\, the Baptist Church and 35 Ock Street\, St Ethelwold’s House\, Kimber House (MG Museum)\, the medieval Merchant’s House\, the Georgian solicitor’s offices on Ock Street\, the Abbey Buildings and the Old Ticket Office at Culham. \nYou can find more details including opening times and locations at www.abingonheritage.org.uk  or come to our Information Stall on the Market Place to start your journey around the town. SUMMARY:Heritage Open Days
DESCRIPTION:A swashbuckling Hollywood icon\, one of the founders of the Arts and Crafts Movement and the great English painter Turner have one thing in common: they all loved Abingdon-on-Thames. \nDouglas Fairbanks Junior dined frequently at The Crown and Thistle\, John Ruskin lived there some years earlier\, and the teenage JMW Turner sketched and painted views of Abingdon and the surrounding countryside.  These stories and how Sir Paul McCartney’s BAFTA award winning “Frogs Chorus” video came to be made in Thames Street will be explored during this year’s Heritage Open Days. \nThe Arts and Creativity theme of this year’s heritage festival will also showcase other gems such as the priceless medieval “Abingdon Missal” decorated by the monks of the Abbey of Abingdon\, which is now held in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. A major exhibition about the Missal will be held in the Abbey Buildings. \nThe town has been home to many famous artists\, actors\, writers\, sculptors and comedians\, all of whom have enriched our national life but whose stories are often untold.  The aim of this year’s Heritage Open Days is to unlock those stories and inspire our townsfolk and visitors with the creativity which Abingdon has encouraged. \nA full list of the events and exhibitions can be found on our website and will be published in leaflets available from early September.. The venues will include the medieval Abbey Buildings\, the Guildhall\, Christ’s Hospital Almshouses and several of the town’s other historic buildings and there will be a “Fab Ab” exhibition in the former H Samuels shop. Abingdon Artists will be helping people to explore painting\, Abingdon Flower Club will be displaying their work\, and Abingdon Drama Club will present a “Son et Lumiere” to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Unicorn Theatre. On the Sunday there will a programme of guided walks. \nInformation and self-guided walk leaflets will be available all weekend\, from our Market Place information stall.
