SUMMARY:The Arts Society Lecture - The Silver Thread: Filigree and traditional arts in Kosova by Elizabeth Gowing
DESCRIPTION:From the early Kosovan silver mines\, which are mentioned in Dante\, a silver thread winds through Kosovo’s history. Its most intricate tanglings are in the country’s cultural capital\, Prizren\, where a seventh generation of filigree artisans use ‘filum’ and ‘granum’\, zigzags\, ‘mouse-tooth’ into magic lacy creations from dull sticks of raw material. The results – in boxes\, buttons\, jewellery\, religious ornamentation\, and the talismans of superstition – are a fine narrative of Kosovo’s history and traditions. \nNon-Members welcome\, £6.00\, PLEASE BOOK via email info@theartssocietyabingdon.org.uk.  Links to the online lecture will be sent out a day or two before.

SUMMARY:Cinema from the Rubble - talk on the post-war politics of the Ealing film studios
DESCRIPTION:The Arts Society Abingdon are presenting an ONLINE Webinar on 21st July 2021 \nCinema from the rubble: the post-war politics of Ealing Studios  talk by Benedict Morrison\, University of Exeter \nThe Live Webinar will start at 11.00 and again live at 14.00  \nEaling Studios are often hailed as the most quintessentially English of all film studios\, reaching their zenith in 1949 with the release of Passport to Pimlico\, Whisky Galore\, and Kind Hearts and Coronets. Celebrated for these films\, and the other magnificent comedies that followed\, the studios’ films have a reputation for cosiness\, whimsicality and gentle subversiveness set amongst the ruins of post-war Britain. Benedict’s lecture revisits these films and reads them again – viewed as comedies of rubble they take on a far more serious set of meanings than their whimsical reputation suggest. \nVisitors/non-members are very welcome to view this lecture\, cost £6.00. If you would like to view online please email info@theartssocietyabingdon.org.uk for further information on payment and to receive the link\, which will be sent out approximately 48 hours before the lecture.
