SUMMARY:Honey & the Bear with support TBC
DESCRIPTION:We’re pleased to welcome back to The Unicorn Theatre Honey & the Bear who have been a tour de force on the UK Folk Festival circuit in recent years. The British folk and roots duo combine delicately interweaving vocal harmonies with emotive and evocative songwriting. With a diverse range of sounds and textures\,and rhythms that flow from the fast and furious to gentle ballads\, their live performances are spirited and dynamic. Conjuring stories in song\, they tell tales of Suffolk folklore\, courageous people they admire and their passion for nature which has been enchanting audiences up and down the country. \nThe multi-instrumentalist\, husband and wife team comprised of songwriters Jon Hart (guitar\, bass\, bouzouki) and Lucy Hart (guitar\, ukulele\, bass\, banjo\, mandolin & percussion)\, are often joined on-stage by band guests Evan Carson (percussion)\, Toby Shaer (Fiddle/Flutes/Whistles) and Archie Churchill-Moss (diatonic button accordion) who feature on all three Honey & The Bear studio albums. Together they have played at many revered venues and festivals across the UK as well as travelled across the channel. \nIn November 2023 they released their latest album ‘Away Beyond the Fret’\, their most personal album yet\, featuring stories and folklore of all things close to their heart including their home in Suffolk\, nature\, family\, history and community. The album has received much critical acclaim including 5 stars from the Morning Star. Shortlisted as FATEAs best band of 2023\, they are continuing to enjoy performing their repertoire live as part of their 10 Year Anniversary Tour this year.\n2020 and the onset of the coronavirus pandemic saw the duo grounded and all gigs cancelled\, but their music prevailed in the form of Sunday night facebook livestreams of which they performed thirty-two throughout the year 2020. After challenging themselves to write a new song for the first 12 weeks of the livestream\, they successfully managed to produce a second album. \n‘Journey Through the Roke’ was released on 23rd April 2021. The album features many talented musicians including Toby Shaer (whistles\, harmonium\, flute\, fiddle\, bass)\, Evan Carson (drums\, bodhran\, percussion)\, Archie Churchill Moss of Moore Moss Rutter (melodeon) and Graham Coe of The Jellyman’s Daughter (cello). ‘Journey Through the Roke’ has received airplay on the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show. \nTheir first full studio album ‘Made In The Aker’ (released July 2019) was followed by a UK tour as a four piece band in October 2019. The album was well received by both their ever growing fan base and the critics. Born and raised in Suffolk\, Lucy learned violin and drums at school\, sung in the Suffolk Jubilee choir and started songwriting at age 15. She taught herself guitar whilst at university in Canterbury\, and began performing her creations not long afterwards. At 27\, she released her debut band album ’Step Right On’\, songs from which you now hear her perform with Jon. Jon\, a Yorkshire boy\, raised in Cambridgeshire\, Norfolk and Suffolk\, has been performing his own songs since his teens. A self taught guitarist\, his love of driving guitar riffs is a core aspect of his song writing process. He has released three band albums\, the latest of which was entitled ‘Level with me’\, featuring ‘wristburner’ which is a gig favourite. \n“a celebration of nature\, history\, family and community. Truly in the folk tradition.” – Steve Johnson – Morning Star \n“Dexterously played with beautifully crafted arrangements around a perfect pairing of voices delivering personal\nfine songs this is a stunning album.” – Marc Higgins – FATEA \n“This album is one of the clearest recordings I’ve heard in a decade\, holding its head above the roke and into the\nsunlight on every track” – Seán Laffey\, Irish Music Magazine \n“The vocals of Lucy are as beautiful as ever….and she is now one of this country’s best folk singers” – Stephen Foster\,\nRadio Caroline & EADT \nSupport TBC \nDors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:15pm

SUMMARY:Hase Waits with support TBC
DESCRIPTION:Hase Waits are an innovative folk music group that are on a mission to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity through their enchanting blend of traditional instrumental music. Using a variety of instruments that include Low Whistles\, Hurdy-Gurdy\, Flutes\, Fiddle\, Guitar\, Bass and Percussion\, they create a sound which captivates and shows a profound respect for the musical heritage they embody. \nThe bands’s name\, formed of two words – ‘Hase’ being the name in the Domesday Book of the town that the band was formed (Hessle) and ‘Waits’ the name the town musicians were called in medieval times.\nHase Waits are sisters – Hannah Bainton & Heather Thomas\, two exceptional flauists & low whistlers\, who have been playing together since the age of 6 & 7! fiddler Phil Ball\, guitarist/hurdy-gurdyist James Thomas\, bassist Luke Hirst & percussionist Gary Hammond. \nTheir music is made up of traditional music fused with their own compositions as James\, Heather & Hannah are prolific composers in the genre. \nThey have performed at many reputable venues & festivals across the UK\, including Beverley Folk Festival\, Beardy Folk Festival\, Gate To Southwell Festival and Underneath The Stars Festival. \nWhether playing in intimate folk clubs or on larger festival stages\, the band captivates audiences with their infectious energy\, beautiful harmonies\, atypical instrumentation. They make you smile\, laugh\, dance and create a tapestry of rhythms that transport audiences to another time. \nNow that’s an act that preserves some meaning to the word ‘genre’. – ThreeChordsandtheTruth \nSupport TBC \nDoors 7pm\, music 7:15pm

SUMMARY:Knight & Spiers with support from Craig Joiner
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome the return of the brilliant Peter Knight and John Spiers to The Unicorn Theatre. Last year they played to a sold out audience. \nThe exquisite explorations of the liminal space that exists between traditional and classical music is what makes the music of Peter Knight and John Spiers so compelling and beguiling\, ultimately rendering genres irrelevant. \nThe duo has developed into one of the most thrilling exponents of traditional tunes and songs\, repurposing the material as jumping-off points into the most enchanting exploration. It’s largely through touring as a duo that they’ve been able to develop what has become an extraordinary partnership\, giving them the confidence to record their latest studio album\, Both in a Tune. Released in 2022\, it was chosen as one of the ‘10 Best New Albums from Around the World’ by the influential music journal\, SONGLINES. \nWhile Peter Knight\, as part of Steeleye Span’s classic 1970s line-up\, helped invent a brand of folk rock that is still influential today\, John Spiers as co-founder of the almighty Bellowhead has had an equally profound impact on the landscape of traditional music over the last two decades. \nThe pairing of violin and melodeon is not a new one\, but in the hands of Knight and Spiers\, improvisation and invention meet the listener at every turn. Together they have created a musical document that resonates with history\, but also something that should inspire future generations of musicians to engage with Britain’s folk dancing heritage\, and the beautiful\, mysterious tunes that can be found within that heritage. \nThese uniquely gifted musicians make a sublime pairing\, and create a live performance to be remembered for a long time. \n“An extraordinary collaboration between two musicians at the absolute top of their game. This is an adventure that takes in musical detours you’d be mad to ignore” – Tradfolk \n“A beautiful snapshot of two musicians at the pinnacle of their craft. Listeners will find themselves lost in something magical; anyone will struggle to find something as masterful as this for a long\, long time” – Bright Young Folk \nSupport will be from Craig Joiner. \nDoors and bar at 7pm\, music at 7:15pm.

SUMMARY:The Lost Trades with support from Detta Kenzie
DESCRIPTION:The Lost Trades are a Folk/Americana group\, based in the West Country\, with a cool Laurel Canyon vibe. With a sound that is reminiscent of the California folk scene of the late 60s/early 70s\, their vocal harmonies have been described as “flawless”\, “spine tingling” and “magical”.\nAfter a global pandemic cut short their first tour after just a single sold out gig\, they retreated to their songwriting rooms to work on their debut album\, “The Bird\, The Book & The Barrel”. The album was released in June 2021 and was well received\, spending 8 months in the official UK Folk Albums Chart. The follow up\, “Petrichor” was released in March 2023\, and immediately followed suit\, entering the chart at #31.\nThere’s always a fun intimacy to their live show\, and comfortable repartee with each other and treating the audience like a group of old friends. \nSupport will be from Devon based Detta Kenzie. \nDoors and bar 7.00pm\, music 7.15pm
