Exhibition – ABINGDON’S OPPIDUM: trade and crafts in an Iron Age settlement
For this summer we have put together another archaeological exhibition: ‘ABINGDON’S OPPIDUM: trade and crafts in an Iron Age Settlement’ from Saturday 6th July to Sunday 29th September 2024.
‘Oppidum’ is a Latin word meaning ‘town’. Archaeologists apply the term to certain large Late Iron Age settlements, often with defences around them, in Britain and other parts of western and central Europe. These were not ordinary farming settlements. They often seem to have been involved in manufacturing goods and in trade, and may also have been centres of power. Our exhibition looks at Iron Age life in the Abingdon oppidum, the crafts its people practised, the trade connections and the relationship with the landscape and other settlements in the area.
