Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day: Commemorating the End of World War II
Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day are significant dates marking the conclusion of World War II in 1945. These days commemorate the Allied forces’ triumphs in Europe and the Pacific, respectively, bringing an end to a conflict that had engulfed nations worldwide.
VE Day: 8 May 1945
On 8 May 1945, the world celebrated VE Day, marking the formal acceptance of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender by the Allied forces. This surrender effectively ended the war in Europe. The announcement led to jubilant celebrations across the United Kingdom and other Allied nations. In London, vast crowds gathered in Trafalgar Square and along The Mall to Buckingham Palace, where King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, and Prime Minister Winston Churchill greeted the public. Churchill addressed the nation, acknowledging the hard-won victory and the challenges that lay ahead.
VJ Day: 15 August and 2 September 1945
Following Germany’s defeat, the war continued in the Pacific. VJ Day marks Japan’s surrender, effectively bringing World War II to a close. The initial announcement of Japan’s surrender was made on 15 August 1945, leading to spontaneous celebrations worldwide. However, the formal surrender documents were signed later, on 2 September 1945, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. This date is also recognized as VJ Day in some countries.
Commemorations and Legacy
Both VE and VJ Days are commemorated annually to honour the sacrifices made during the war and to celebrate the restoration of peace. In the United Kingdom, VE Day is observed on 8 May, while VJ Day is remembered on 15 August. These occasions serve as reminders of the resilience and unity demonstrated during one of history’s most challenging periods.
As we approach the 80th anniversaries of these significant events, various commemorations are planned to honour the remaining veterans and reflect on the enduring impact of World War II. These anniversaries provide an opportunity for communities, including Abingdon, to come together in remembrance and gratitude.
