Georgy Kantor and Hannah Skoda – The Picture Collection in St John’s College, Oxford
The talk will cover the history and some highlights of the college’s art collection, which includes pictures, tapestries, sculpture, silver, and ceramics, the ways in which it reflects the changing nature of the college community over the past 450 years, and its place in the life of the college now. The collection is scattered throughout the College and many items are not on public display. As well as including portraits of former Presidents, Fellows, distinguished alumni and benefactors, there are pieces by both old masters and more modern artists. Georgy will tell us about the Collection, some of the highlights and his favourites. Dr Kantor is Fellow in Ancient History at St John’s, and Dr Skoda is Fellow in Medieval History. As Keepers of Pictures, Silver and Vestments they share the responsibility for the collection.
