Abingdon Museum Friends

Conserve the Past for the Future

Abingdon Museum Friends work with and for Abingdon County Hall Museum. Members support the role of the Museum as a focal point for Abingdon’s residents, the provision of a tourist destination for visitors, keeping the iconic 1680s centrepiece of town at its best. The Museum is a place to learn, understand and enjoy the heritage and environment of Abingdon-on-Thames.

The Friends organisation is very sociable and it meets monthly during autumn and winter for a variety of talks also events such as gallery exhibition launches. In the summer months there are day trips to other museums and places of interest both locally and further afield. Past visits have included seeing the new bells of St Helen's church, before they were commissioned, the Birmingham Backs-to-Backs, art gallery trips, other museums and stately houses.

The Friends funded the acquisition of a delightful watercolour by Nathaniel Sparks. It shows a riverside view of Abingdon from Fairlawn Wharf and dates to the early part of this century. Money raised through the events programme has contributed to other projects, such as the transfer of old film footage of Abingdon onto videotape.

A current exhibition of art with paintings, drawings, photographs of the town has had input from the Friends and from local historians.
