The Council is pleased to announce that this week major building improvements have started on the Guildhall. These are the first major improvements to the Guildhall for many years and will help to make the building fit for the modern age and improve inclusivity for all. Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council are once again organising the popular “Music in the Park” event. Music in the Park has taken place in the Abbey Grounds every year since its inception as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012, attracting large crowds with 3,500 wristbands being made available in the spring. This year Music in the Park takes place in the evening of Saturday 2nd June, following on from the popular daytime event, Fun in the Park.
The event includes performances predominantly by local bands and the organising committee has already received a number of expressions of interest. The Council is keen that word gets out as widely as possible so any interested bands have a chance to perform at this popular event which is now firmly embedded in Abingdon’s annual calendar.
Any bands who are interested in playing at Music in the Park are asked to contact the Council with a short resume (two sides A4 maximum) to include:
Name of band and details of members;
Where the band is based;
The musical genre of the band;
Details of performances/ gigs in the last twelve months;
A sample set list for a 45-minute performance.
Bands are also requested to send in a CD/ DVD of their music or a “You Tube” link or similar.
Applications to be part of this event must be made by 5pm on Wednesday 14th February 2018 and e-mailed to louise.brown@abingdon.gov.uk. Applications without the above information will not be considered.
The organising committee will be looking to make a decision on which bands will be performing by mid-March.
The Mayor of Abingdon-on-Thames, Cllr Jan Morter, is hosting a Joint concert with Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir and Oxfordshire County Youth Choir On Saturday 3rd February 2018 at 7:30 PM.
The Concert is being held at St Helens Church in Abingdon and all proceeds that are raised are going to the Mayor’s Charities, Against Breast Cancer and The Abingdon Bridge.
Tickets are £10.00 per person, and are available via the Information Centre at Roysse Court (Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 3pm).
Tickets are expected to sell quickly, so make sure you get yours soon and come along for an enjoyable evening.
The Mayor of Abingdon-on-Thames, Cllr Jan Morter, is hosting a Charity Race Night at The Loose Cannon Brewery. This will take place on Saturday 27th January 2018 at 7pm. All proceeds go to the Mayor’s Charities, Against Breast Cancer and The Abingdon Bridge.

The Mayor of Abingdon-on-Thames Councillor Jan Morter, is hosting a festive tea with entertainment for Abingdon-on-Thames’s older residents on Monday 18th December.
Do you live in Abingdon-on-Thames? Are you 70 or over? Great! Then come along for the festive fun.
Please call in to the Information Centre at the front of Bridge Street entrance of the Guildhall for a ticket. Tickets will be available from 20/11/2017 until all the tickets are gone – so come down quick! The information centre is open Monday – Saturday, 9:30 AM – 3:00 PM.

It is with regret that, after taking professional advice, the Council has temporarily closed the bridge leading from St Helen’s Court into the Ock Valley Walk.
The wooden bridge has been subject to vandalism attacks over a sustained period and this has now led to parts of the bridge becoming unsafe. The Council recognises that the closure of the bridge will cause inconvenience to members of the public but public safety must always be paramount in considering such matters.
The Town Council will, as a matter of urgency, instruct surveyors to look into a more robust and sturdy construction and aims to progress work as quickly as possible. It will be appreciated that work on the bridge will be more difficult at this time of the year but the Council and would aim to have undertaken works before next spring.
