Find out how discarded household items, documents and tools can tell us about past societies, their daily life, interests and traditions. This exhibition also looks at what we throw away today, what happens to it and considers the effects on our environment.

If we were looking back from a distant future, digging up the archaeology of tomorrow, what would we think about ourselves and our life styles?

GREAT WAR PROPAGANDA

Very moving exhibition open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 4pm

Abingdon County Hall Museum proudly presents an exhibition comprised of recruitment and propaganda posters of the Great War. The diverse collection tells the story of a society at the beginning of the first modern war when each day changing news and messages were delivered. Some claimed the war would last a few short months, the end was always in sight, and if ‘we’ were just roused to volunteer, then ‘we’ would return home soon, victorious and as heroes.

As the war progressed and it was evident that the end was not clearly in sight, statements and pronouncements shifted emphasis; different pressurising phrases were applied to suit their end.

The posters are mainly from 1914 to 1916. Recruitment was no longer necessary when conscription came in during 1916. They also draw our attention to the government’s need to raise finance without looking to the international markets, for the population to back the war with loans, which in turn created an inclusivity and the legitimacy necessary for a prolonged campaign.

The elegant and striking imagery, dynamic and firm graphic text and powerful messages of the posters are also balanced and contextualised by original war memorabilia such as trench art, decommissioned weaponry and artefacts such as a gas mask and remnants from a zeppelin.

Located in the Sessions Gallery of Abingdon Museum, this exhibition is on the first floor, up 37 steps from the lobby, and it is not wheelchair accessible.

A smaller selection from the posters collection of Abingdon museum is also on show at St. Nicolas’ church Monday to Saturday (10 am – 4.30 pm) until 23^rd December 2018. The church is wheelchair accessible and is fully accessible to impaired mobility people.

AAAHS 50th Anniversary – Gallery Talks

From Saturday 21st to Sunday 29th July 2018 – (11:30 am – 2:15 pm)

For fifty years the Abingdon Archaeological and Historical Society has been at the forefront of research into the town’s past. Its members have excavated sites, examined historic buildings, and scoured archives. Throughout their 50th Anniversary exhibition at the museum, AAAHS members will deliver talks and discussions that will explore Abingdon’s history, archaeology and architecture showing visitors what the society has accomplished in the past fifty years.

Your last chance to get wristbands for Saturday’s Music in the Park

There are just a few wristbands remaining for this Saturday’s “Music in the Park.” The event takes place in the Abbey Grounds – gates open 5pm and the event ends with the traditional firework display at 10pm.

If you have already ordered your wristbands online and chosen to collect them ahead of the event, these must be collected from the Council’s offices at Roysse Court. To assist those who may not be able to collect their wristbands, we have arranged to open last this Thursday evening, so you may now collect your wristbands either Thursday from 9am to 7pm; or Friday, 9am to 4pm.

If you have yet to purchase wristbands, you must act fast – the wristbands will be on sale at the Royyse Court offices from 9am on Thursday but will sell out soon.

Taking inspiration from Robert Strange’s vivid drawings of sweet wrappers and discarded items, kids can create colourful paper works with guidance from the artist himself.

Kids Craft Session with Robert Strange will be held in the Sessions Gallery.

Exclusive ‘MG made in Abingdon’ book signing by Bob Frampton on Sunday 15th April (10am – 3pm) to coincide with the opening of the new temporary exhibition ‘Automotive/Design: Innovations at MG Abingdon.’
On this day you can have your copy of ‘MG Made in Abingdon’ signed by its author Bob Frampton. If you don’t already have one, copies will be available to purchase in the museum shop for £14.99.

Music in the Park 2018

Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council are once again organising the popular “Music in the Park” event!

Wristbands for this year’s event are on sale now. Wristbands will cost £10 for adults and £5 for children. Under 5’s are free and must be worn so please remember to ask. No concessions.

Tickets are available from Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council, Roysse Court Offices, and online. With online sales there is an option for collecting them or paying extra for postage until we get near the date of the event.

Music in the Park has taken place in the Abbey Grounds every year since its inception as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012, attracting large crowds with 3,500 wristbands being made available in the spring.

This year’s Music in the Park takes place in the evening of Saturday 2nd June, following on from the popular daytime event, Fun in the Park.

The evening event will start at 5pm with live music from local bands and concludes with a Proms Concert by Abingdon Town Band and a Grand Firework Display.
