OUTDOOR SERVICES OPERATIVE
An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Town Council’s busy Outdoor Services Team for an Outdoor Services Operative offering a varied range of jobs within the town.
You will be a member of a small team assisting with grave digging and other cemetery work. You will undertake a wide variety of other tasks relating to the maintenance and development of facilities in the town including open spaces, playgrounds, street furniture and some public buildings. Flexibility and a willingness to be involved in tasks as diverse as weed control, watering the town’s floral displays, litter picking and in assisting at civic and community events the Council may hold. The Town Council’s activities are many and varied.
You will need to be physically fit for digging and lifting. You must have a positive and sensitive attitude to the public at all times. Candidates should have previous experience in grounds maintenance / horticulture, and it is essential that you have a current “clean” driving licence.
It is desirable that applicants have previous experience operating machinery, supported by relevant certification or a proven track record with equipment such as ride-on mowers, woodchippers, strimmers, hedge cutters, mowers, or chainsaws. The Town Council Outdoor Services Team operates a wide range of machinery, and full training will be provided; however, practical knowledge of any of these machines will be an advantage.
The successful candidate will have excellent communication and organisational skills as well as awareness of the relevant health and safety protocols. You should also be able to work as a member of a team and be a confident lone worker.
The Outdoor Services Team works a 36.5 hour week and you will be entitled to 24 days’ annual leave per year on NJC scales 7-11 and 25 days’ annual leave upon reaching NJC scale 12, plus public holidays and extra statutory days. You will also be awarded an additional 5 days for long service, granted after 5 years of employment with the council / local government.
The successful candidate will commence at NJC scale points 7, which is currently an annual salary of £26,403. However, there is potential, subject to satisfactory performance, to earn up to NJC scale point 12 (£28, 598). You will also be eligible to join the Local Government Pension Scheme. The Town Council is a keen investor in people and personal development and training will be offered. The Council also offer a cycle to work scheme and Employee Assistance Programme.

On Friday 11th December the Mayor of Abingdon-on-Thames, Cllr Helen Pighills, will be hosting the annual Over 70’s Christmas Party.
This year it will begin at 2pm at the Preston Road Community Centre South Abingdon.
Tickets are free and will be available from the 16th November at Abingdon Visitor and Community Information Centre, Roysse Court, Bridge Street.
The Centre opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 9:30am till 3:00pm.
Abingdon can go from strength to strength
Businesses in Abingdon have voted in favour of the town centre becoming a Business Improvement District.
This means businesses in the area covered by the improvement district will pay money into a pot, which will be spent on improving the town centre with the aim of making it a better place for people to come and shop.
The amount of money a business contributes depends on its size, and some types of business don’t have to pay. In total it will create almost £800,000 over the course of five years, all of which will be invested directly back into the town centre.
Councillor Sandy Lovatt, Leader of the Abingdon-on-Thames Town Concil said,
“A fantastic result for the Town and it gives the traders an independent source of funding support to promote Abingdon’s economy”.

Get your teams together and tackle the annual Mayor of Abingdon-on-Thames Charity Quiz. This year’s quiz takes place on Friday 23rd October, 7.00pm for 7.30pm start, at the Long Furlong Community Centre, Abingdon.

Following a meeting of the Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council last night a press release has been issued with important news about the future plans for the Guildhall. For further information and a copy of the press release please click here.
Tonight the present Mayor of Abingdon-on-Thames, Cllr Angela Lawrence, will open the proceedings of the Town Council’s Annual Meeting and preside over the election of the new Mayor.
Cllr Angela Lawrence will be reflecting on her year in office, the success of the charity fund-raising that is a part of Mayoral events and wil give awards to members of the community who have given service to the town.
The handover to the new Mayor is both symbolic and literal as the present Mayor unrobes and hands over all the trappings of the position, including gown and chain of office to the newly elected Mayor. On this occasion the retirement of Mace Bearer, Malcolm Hill, means that the mace will also be handed over to a new pair of hands.
Following this the new Mayor will preside over the first Full Council meeting of the new post-election administration and all committee places will be taken up including the Chairmanship of each committee.
The public are welcome to join the Council at this meeting (7pm in the Abbey Hall) which is all in open session. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Roysse Room.
