Former Abingdon town Mayor Peter Green has sadly died.
Mr Green was born in London and served in the RAF, including RAF Benson in Oxfordshire, which prompted a move to Abingdon in the 1980s.
He was an active local resident, involved in the Scouting movement and a range of local groups including the Abingdon Lions and the Rotary Club. He helped Abingdon Sea Cadets to set up a new committee in 2008, introducing several new sponsors. He also acted in, wrote and produced local dramas and pantomimes.
Mr Green was elected to Abingdon Town Council in 1999 and was a very active councillor, working to develop the Ock Walk and nature trail. He ensured that the Market Place refurbishment included Liquid Amber trees and a central crest.
Around the year 2000, Pete and Tony Legge founded the Abingdon Guild of Town Criers and made his final ‘cry’ in 2018.
He was Mayor of Abingdon in 2006, the 450th anniversary year of Abingdon’s Town Charter. The highlight of his year was hosting Princess Anne for a celebration Bun Throwing.
Mr Green was elected to the Vale of White Horse District Council in 2001 and served until 2007, when he retired from both the town and district councils.
He leaves behind his wife, Hilary Green, Mayor of Abingdon from 2003-4, his children Michael and Sarah and his stepsons Matthew and Will.
