National minute’s silence for His Royal Highness Prince Philip

His Royal Highness the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh passed away on Friday 9th April.

In accordance with Royal, Civic and Protocol Mrs Felicity Dick, Deputy Lieutenant of Oxfordshire and Cllr Charlie Birks, Mayor of Abingdon, joined the country in a national minute’s silence today at exactly 3pm on April 17 at start of the Duke’s funeral service. The Deputy Lieutenant and the Mayor observed the silence on the Market Place, in front of the County Hall and were accompanied by Mr Nigel Warner, Town Clerk of Abingdon. The start and finish of the minute’s silence was indicated by Mr Jon Shaw, a member of the Abingdon Guild of Town Criers.

The Duke was much loved and admired in Abingdon as he was across the country and the Commonwealth. We share the sentiments of loss and sorrow felt at the passing of such a remarkable consort who touched so many people’s lives.

The Mayor Cllr Charlie Birks has written on behalf of the people and Council of Abingdon to extend heartfelt sympathies to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family at this this difficult time.
