MAYOR ANNOUNCES CLUBS’ AND SOCIETIES’ DAY FOR 2019
MAYOR ANNOUNCES CLUBS’ AND SOCIETIES’ DAY FOR 2019
The Mayor of Abingdon-on-Thames, Cllr Margaret Crick, has announced that Abingdon’s Clubs’ & Societies’ Day will take place in the Guildhall on Saturday 16th March 2019 from 10AM – 3PM.
Cllr Crick stated that “I’m absolutely delighted as Mayor to be hosting the Clubs’ & Societies’ Day. Clubs’ & Societies’ Day showcases the wonderful range of activities that are available for local residents of all ages in the town. It is an open day when everyone has the opportunity to come along and find out more about what is on offer and hopefully get involved. There is a wonderful variety of clubs and societies in the town and we believe many more opportunities for residents than in similar size towns.
“Clubs’ & Societies’ Day has traditionally been organised by the Mayor since it was inaugurated by the late Janet Morgan during her mayoral year some 30 years ago. I am particularly pleased that this year we are able to welcome the clubs and societies and local residents to the newly refurbished Guildhall rooms. Having served on the Guildhall Development Working Group during the last couple of years I know how much hard work, thought and effort has gone into revitalising the Guildhall and the Abbey Hall.”
Before then the Guildhall is reopening for hire by the public following extensive improvements which has improved access and again provides a popular community resource for clubs and societies, weddings and social events. Residents will have the opportunity to view the Guildhall facilities over two open weekends of celebration which will take place on 2nd/ 3rd and 16th/17th February from 9am until 6pm. Refreshments will be served throughout the day and tours will include the new Abbey Cinema in the 1960s Abbey Hall.
The new management team, which operates both the Guildhall and the Abbey Cinema, will be on hand to welcome visitors, show them the new facilities and answer enquiries.
Bookings are now live for residents who wish to book events at the Guildhall and there is a new website at www.guildhall.ac and enquiry line 01235 524085.
The Town Council also supports local clubs and societies in a number of different ways and these include: free clubs and societies listings on the website, free use of the Market Place for events, opportunity for free stalls and activities at the annual Fun in the Park event and access to the town’s generous community grant scheme.
