Tour of Ancient Abingdon

SUNDAY 1st MAY 2022

Join local archaeologist Jeff Wallis for a walk and discover the traces of ancient settlements, such as an early Bronze Age barrow cemetery at Barrow Hills in North Abingdon. Jeff is a silversmith with an archaeological and palaeontology background. He focuses on ancient Abingdon and points out key markers in the landscape that give clues to its history.
You might be surprised at the hidden archaeology nearby!

The Abingdon Waterways Walk

Do you prefer to combine a slice of history with a lot of walking?

The Abingdon Waterways Walk makes a great day out. It’s an eight mile circular walk taking in the heart of Abingdon’s medieval town centre, the charms of the villages of Drayton and Sutton Courtenay, and parts of the Thames Path. Start around mid morning at the free car park at Culham Lock OX14 4NE and you will be in Abingdon-on-Thames just in time to fuel your body with a lunch stop at one of our many pubs and cafes.  Throughout town there are good choices for a place to eat or buy a picnic.

Hit the trail again to reach the village of Sutton Courtenay just as the mid afternoon sun tells you its time for a pub stop, just leaving you with one or two fields to cross to bring you back to the car.

Our illustrated book contains anecdotes about the places you pass on the way and hand drawn maps to make the route finding easy.

Get this Waterways  booklet free from the Information Centre or for maps and walking ideas the town has two independent book shops, Mostly Books or The Bookstore. and a WHS.
