As Christmas approaches, Abingdon will be decorated with lights and a tree in the Market Place and the lights will be switched on at our extravaganza on 26 November 2022.
The event will start at 12 noon and the lights are planned to go on at 6pm. The event is being organised by Abingdon Events Partnership, supported by the town council. More details of what’s on will be added here as the weeks go on and you can find out more here.
We hope to revitalise Abingdon’s festive spirit once more after the past few years when we couldn’t celebrate together.
Carbon Cutters are pleased with the number of people using their apple press to turn windfall apples from local gardens into juice that can be drunk immediately or pasteurised. It’s all part of their campaign against food waste. If you have apples you haven’t managed to turn into apple pies yet despite your best intentions, go along to the community shop in Bury Street where the Abingdon Carbon Cutters have set up their press. There’s still one more week of apple pressing in the community shop so there’s still time to pop along between Monday and Friday 10am to 4pm, find out how it all works and book your time slot for using the press.
This weekend is Heritage Open Doors Weekend, a great opportunity to get inside some of the intriguing buildings of Abingdon-on-Thames. The organisers will be in the Market Place Saturday and Sunday mornings with information leaflets and maps. As well as the return of the fantastic Retro Fair at the Guildhall there will be heritage walks, pike drill by the Cavalier soldiers, boat trips, the unveiling of new information boards for St Helens and wonderful old photos of the town in the community shop – lots to do over this weekend in the oldest continuously inhabited town in the country! The hottest day of the year so far but the crowds were certainly treated to energising performances by Abingdon’s young people on the Market Place today. The Youth Music Festival, organised by Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council, showcased diverse talent amongst Abingdon’s young musicians and singers. Groups and individuals from the Vale and Abingdon Music Centres, Abingdon’s secondary and primary schools – folk, rock, jazz, and musical ensembles – provided three hours of inspiring entertainment while the crowds basked in the sunshine.
Local Excellence is a market at which local food producers, craftworkers and retailers sell their goods in Abingdon Market Place. The Local Excellence Market gives Abingdon shoppers the chance to sample foods, beers and crafts from Oxfordshire and nearby.
The market starts at 9am and packs up at 2pm, sometimes later. Held on occasional Saturdays through the year, it is very popular with people who are at work all week and miss out on our weekly markets on Monday or the local farmers’ market on the third Friday in the month. Local Excellence is the largest market held in Abingdon-on-Thames.

Choose Abingdon’s Community Use Scheme has been so popular with community groups that the original idea of the scheme is being expanded. When the Partnership first invested in some gazebos it was mainly envisaged that they would be used as part of the Local Excellence Market, to enable small traders starting out to take a pitch without necessarily having to invest in equipment before they knew if their business model would work. It soon became obvious that the gazebos were also very much in demand by community groups who want to run events in the town. Choose Abingdon exists to help such initiatives to flourish by providing a helping hand or just removing some of the barriers that make it difficult or expensive to get events started, particularly in their first year or so.
For the past two years now the gazebos have been lent to community groups for events on the Market Place and elsewhere. Small rental charges are levied to cover the wear and tear and to make sure the project can sustain itself. In 2012, the number of gazebos was increased and now we have also received funding for two marquees which will be used for some events (under supervision). This is all thanks to the Government’s High Street Innovation Fund and the Oxfordshire County Council Big Society Fund, accessed by one of our board members, Cllr Marilyn Badcock.
This is a typical example of the joined-up approach that the Partnership helps to foster, with councils, Partnership and community groups all working together to create a vibrant community life.
